PROGRESS BEING MADE INCHINESE INDUSTRY

By Daithi Harvey

Mick Donohoe is a man who certainly isn't averse to

embracing foreign cultures, and the BBA Ireland agent has

learned a thing or two about doing business in China over the

last seven years. Donohoe has been and continues to be a

regular visitor to China, and his endeavors have definitely borne

fruit with the emergence of the Yulong group as one of the most

significant overseas investors in Irish racing and bloodstock in

recent years. Donohoe has been a prolific purchaser of both

yearlings and horses-in-training on behalf of the group's owner,

Zhang Yuesheng, most notably when purchasing over 60

yearlings at the Goffs Sportsman's Sale in 2016.

So what changes and improvements has Donohoe seen to the

fledgling Chinese racing industry in the last five or six years?

"Obviously there has been quite a few developments since I

started going out there," he said. "There are now a couple of key

core owners, Mr Zhang being one of them, who are investing a

lot of money into the industry trying to bring it forward. On the

racing front the Wuhan Jockey Club are now hosting regular

racing as is Yulong Racecourse in the Shanxi Province, while a

few new regional racecourses have cropped up.

However, some are regulated and some are not, and that is anaspect that needs to be tightened up. Progress Being Made In Chinese Industry cont. from p1

AThe daunting side of it was when it came to actually doing

business. The Chinese have their own way of operating so you

have to adjust to that and work with them. It took a while for

me to adapt to their way of doing things but once you respect

their boundaries I find it's a very good country to do business

in."

In many ways when a nation to decides to develop an industry

that is well established in other countries, there are no shortage

of templates and blue prints available around the world. In this

respect Donohoe thinks the Chinese have cut no corners in

providing world-class training centres and education services to

cater for their burgeoning industry.

"The standard of horsemanship has improved beyond

recognition since I started going out there,@ he said. AIn

particular at Wuhan and Yulong the standard there is second to

none. They have employed jockey coaches from Australia and

they have helped to raise the standard significantly while there

are also some Godolphin Flying Start graduates who have

brought international expertise to the industry. On the facilities

side of things Mr Zhang built 500 stables at Yulong and both the

stables and horse-walkers were sourced in Ireland, so it=s first-

class."

As well as being a champion of the industry in his native land,

Mr Zhang is becoming a major international force with growing

Thoroughbred interests also in Ireland, Singapore, Australia and

America.

"This year he could have close to 40 horses in training in

Ireland, so he has become a significant investor in Ireland,@

Donohoe said. AThis year's bunch of horses are by far the best he

has had as well so we are really looking forward to the flat

season.@

This year some of the older horses that were in Ireland have

been transferred to Singapore to continue their racing career.

"We feel when they may have reached their peak over here,

some horses could benefit from racing over in Singapore,@

Donohoe said. AFor example, Yulong Baobei [a stakes winner in

Ireland in 2016] is now in Singapore and when she finishes

racing there she will probably retire to stud at Mr Zhang's farm

in Australia. Callender is another one that has gone over. The

prizemoney is quite good out there and as well as Singapore

being a kind of a halfway house, the organization behind the

track in Singapore, through Eric Koh, were a big help to Mr

Zhang when he was developing Yulong. For that reason he likes

to support their racing product in return."

(Editor=s Note: Yu Long Stable had its first win in Sinagpore on

Friday with Yu Long Emperor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}).)

Donohoe was at Goffs earlier this week shopping for fillies that

will be destined to embark on breeding careers in another

emerging Asian market, Outer Mongolia. He was assisting

Mongolian veterinary surgeon Naranbaatar Adiya, better known

as Nara, in his purchases on behalf of other owners in Outer

Mongolia where the population of Thoroughbred mares is only

in double figures. That number looks set to grow significantly

due to the acquisition recently of a Group 3-winning son of

Galileo (Ire) off the racetrack to stand in the country, whose

name Donohoe unfortunately could not divulge just yet with the

deal still in the offing.

"We began feeling our way in Outer Mongolia in 2013 and it is

another emerging market that has scope to develop,@ he said.

ANara is doing a lot of work in promoting the Thoroughbred

industry over there and having bought a few horses privately

earlier this week, we picked up three more fillies on Thursday.@

Nara, who himself specializes in equine reproduction, has been

in Ireland on a number of occasions in the past few years and is

keen to develop a supply line to Outer Mongolia from where he

considers to be the best source of Thoroughbreds.

"We have been importing horses from Russia for many years

but we would prefer to purchase them directly from Ireland as

there is greater choice and quality over here. We were delighted

to buy three fillies at Goffs including a three-time winning Iffraaj

mare [lot 554] for just i12,000," Nara said.

With the Thoroughbred industry in Outer Mongolia at such an

infantile stage it can only go one way, and that is up. With his

experience of aiding the development of a similarly nascent

industry in China, Mick Donohoe is well positioned to capitalize

on its growth. That being said, the Kilkenny man is no one trick

pony, and with a healthy book of clients in Saudi Arabia, Dubai,

Hong Kong and America, the agent is not likely to let the grass

grow under his feet in Ireland any time soon.

"The standard of horsemanship has improvedbeyond recognition since I started going out there."

Winx and Hugh Bowman | Bronwen Healy

WINX TO GALLOP ON APOLLO DAY Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) will

step out on Apollo S. day at

Randwick on Saturday after all,

with the mare set to participate in

a race-simulating 1200 metre

gallop between races with four

stablemates.

The 6-year-old mare was set to

start her season in the G2 Apollo

S.Bwhich she has won the last two

years as part of her 22-race win

streakBbut connections opted to

bypass that event and head

straight to the G1 Chipping Norton

S.Bwhich she has also won the past

two yearsBon Mar. 3 after regular

rider Bowman was forced to miss the card due to successive

careless riding suspensions.

The gallop will take place after race three, and Hugh Bowman

will be fitted with a camera and microphone.

AThis is an interesting way to show the general public a behind-

the-scenes aspect of Winx,@ said trainer Chris Waller. AIt is

obvious that people want to know more about her and it

is hard to find new ways to be able to convey to people what

she is like without repeating ourselves in the media or at the

races, so this will certainly give

an insight into what goes

towards preparing a horse for

a big race.@

AAs we see in modern-day

sport, especially on the

television whether it be the

20/20 cricket or motor car

racing, and as early as this

week, the Super Bowl, the

general public want new

initiatives and new ways to

connect with the sports they

follow, so I am certainly

looking forward to being part

of this initiative,@ Waller added.

CATHOLIC BOY LOOMSLARGE IN SAM DAVIS

by Joe Bianca

After Robert LaPenta=s Catholic Boy (More Than Ready) reeled

off two straight impressive turf wins to start his career and ran a

respectable fourth in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf, it was

presumed he would be a useful 3-year-old grass horse in 2018.

After he dominated the GII Remsen S. on dirt, he showed he was

capable of much more than that, and he=ll take his first

sophomore step toward a potential GI Kentucky Derby start as

the heavy favorite in Saturday=s GIII Sam F. Davis S. at Tampa

Bay Downs.

Capturing the GIII With Anticipation S. last summer at Saratoga

as a 12-1 longshot, Catholic Boy attracted many a wiseguy play

in the Breeders= Cup, but got buried in traffic for much of the

running before finishing up decently to complete the superfecta

and galloping out in front. Trainer Jonathan Thomas decided to

take a shot on the main track Dec. 2 at Aqueduct, and the bay

responded with a comprehensive 4 3/4-length victory, earning a

career-best 91 Beyer and an investment from new minority

owner Sol Kumin=s Madaket Stables. The runner-up that day,

Avery Island (Street Sense), returned to score in the GIII Withers

S. last Saturday.

six-horse field. He aired by 9 1/2 lengths in his six-furlong debut

on New Year=s Day at Santa Anita and, finishing third that day,

Kaleem Shah=s homebred All Out Blitz (Concord Point) set the

in the GI Sentient Jet Breeders= Cup Juvenile last out. The dark

bay, who was entered as one of four for trainer Dale Romans in

last Saturday=s GII Holy Bull S. at Gulfstream before scratching,

breezed five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 (10/35) Sunday in Hallandale.

It wouldn=t be a meaningful Derby prep without an entry from

Todd Pletcher, who sends out Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable=s

undefeated Vino Rosso (Curlin). Picked up for $410,000 at

KEESEP, the chestnut debuted with a well-bet victory Nov. 11 at

Aqueduct and repeated with a workmanlike allowance score

going two turns here Dec. 22.

Ed DeRosa of TwinSpires.com takes on TDN's Steve Sherack and

Brian DiDonato as they handicap each prep race leading up to

the GI Kentucky Derby. The three will make $100 Win/Place bets

--highest bankroll after the Lexington S. wins.

DeRosa: Last Week - We=re on the board and in the black

through three races thanks to Audible=s win in the Holy Bull S.,

but already playing catch up. Bankroll: $640.

GIII Sam F. Davis S. - There=s some opportunity in the Sam F.

Davis S., where Catholic Boy doesn=t have to win this off the

layoff since capturing the Remsen, which isn=t a terribly key

Triple Crown trail prep race anyway. Vouch looks interesting

with some speed off the layoff, and is worth his 8-1 morning-line

price, which I think we=ll get given the known name in here and

a balanced group otherwise. Selection: #7 Vouch (8-1).

Sherack: Last Week - Not exactly the start I was looking for,

especially with both of my opponents landing on winners, but

there=s still plenty of time. Free Drop Billy turned in the best

performance of my three selections, completing the exacta in

the Holy Bull. Marconi still has some growing up to do and

Inscom never showed up. Bankroll: $220.

GIII Sam F. Davis S. - Not quite ready to call Vino Rosso this

year=s Always Dreaming just yet, but don=t think he has to be to

win this. The unbeaten son of Curlin has every right to take a

step forward off two easy victories, including a local optional

claimer in his two-turn bow Dec. 22. Tactical speed gives him a

major advantage over deserving favorite Catholic Boy.

Selection: #3 Vino Rosso (3-1).

DiDonato: Last Week - It was a pretty solid start to the contest,

with Lombo (8-1) going out to the front and never looking back

in the Bob Lewis. Free Drop Billy had to settle for second behind

Ed=s pick and my back-up pick Audible in the Holy Bull, while

Marconi was still too green for his own good and checked in

third in the Withers. Bankroll: $1710. Cont. p6

Throwdown - DiDonato cont.

GIII Sam F. Davis S. - Catholic Boy is certainly the one to beat in

here, and if he reproduces his last it=s unlikely he=ll be defeated,

but you still have to play against him in a contest like this. Vouch

was third behind him that day, but the quality of their respective

performances was probably closer than the 6 1/2-length margin

between them. Vouch, an impressive debut winner going this

trip at Laurel at the end of October, was hung wide into the first

turn, and was a bit closer to a pace that came apart while

traveling without cover. Catholic Boy was able to draft right

behind him, make the second move, and probably appreciated

the nine-furlong distance a bit more thanks to pedigree and

seasoning. The slight cutback here is a bit of equalizer, and

Arnaud Delacour is having another big meet at his winter home

base. Selection: #7 Vouch (8-1).

HEART TO HEART SEEKS ELUSIVE GRADE I IN

GP TURF by Alan Carasso

On seven occasions, Terry Hamilton=s Heart to Heart (English

Channel) has tried Grade I competition, only to be thwarted on

each attempt. On the flip side of that coin, he has finished

second or third in four of those races, with three of those

defeats by less than 3/4 of a length. The durable 7-year-old will

look to right that wrong in a competitive-looking renewal of the

GI Gulfstream Park Turf S. Saturday in Hallandale.

The bay earned better than a half-million dollars in another

successful season in 2017, dropping a half-length decision in the

GI Shadwell Turf Mile before fading to finish 10th after setting a

decent pace in the GI Breeders= Cup Mile in November.

NEW CHAMPION WORLD APPROVAL

RETURNS IN TAMPA BAY

by Joe Bianca

Few remember because of the brilliant season that ensued,

but newly crowned champion male turf horse World Approval

(Northern Afleet) started his 2017 campaign with a visit to the

Oldsmar oval of Tampa Bay Downs. Three Grade I wins and an

Eclipse statuette later, the gray will kick off his 2018 journey in

the same place as the prohibitive favorite in Saturday=s

GIII Tampa Bay S.

Easily annexing the

Florida-bred Turf

Classic S. here last

April, the Live Oak

Plantation

colorbearer

repeated in the GII

Dixie S. at Pimlico

and, after suffering

his only defeat of the

year when fifth in

the GI Woodford

Reserve Manhattan

S., reeled off consecutive scores in the GI Fourstardave H.,

GI Ricoh Woodbine Mile and GI Breeders= Cup Mile. The gelding

shows five turf breezes at Palm Meadows in the interim,

completing preparations with a half-mile spin around dogs in

:49 flat (6/24) Feb. 3.

Despite all of his accomplishments, World Approval hasn=t

scared off the competition, as nine rivals are slated to take their

crack at the champ in his 6-year-old bow. Cont. p9

The two who appear to have the clear next-best chances if the

favorite missteps are Phipps Stable=s Fire Away (War Front) and

Juddmonte Farms= Forge (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). The former was a

consistent high-priced optional claiming performer for much of

last season before breaking through with a victory in the Artie

Schiller S. when last seen Nov. 18 at Aqueduct. The homebred

earned a career-best 102 Beyer for that effort, tops in the field

aside from World Approval. The latter was a good second at

13-1 in the GII Bernard Baruch H. last summer at Saratoga

before disappointing as the favorite when seventh in the

GII Knickerbocker S. last out Oct. 9 at Belmont.

LA CORONEL >ENDEAVOURS= FOR TAMPA

REVENGE

by Joe Bianca

John C. Oxley=s La Coronel (Colonel John) concluded her

sophomore season with a Grade I victory, but she began it with

a frustrating loss on the Tampa Bay Downs turf. She=ll look to

avenge that defeat and start a promising 4-year-old campaign

on a winning note in the GIII Lambholm South Endeavour S.

Saturday in Oldsmar.

Dispatched as the odds-on favorite in the GIII Florida Oaks

here last March, the $375,000 OBS April buy made a huge four-

wide blitz for the lead on the far turn and beat back a rail-

skimming runner in deep stretch only to be run down by a neck

in the final strides. She rebounded in both the GIII Appalachian

S. and GIII Edgewood S. and closed her campaign with a game

victory in the GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. at

Keeneland Oct. 14.

La Coronel has a formidable rival also making her 2018 debut

in Dom Felipe LLC=s Dona Bruja (Arg) (Storm Embrujado {Arg}).

Victress of the G1 Copa de Plata in her native land, the bay

impressed when capturing the

GIII Mint Julep H. and GIII Modesty H. in her first two Stateside

outings last summer

before dead-heating

for second in the

GI Beverly D. S. Up

against it in the

slow-paced GI First

Lady S. when last

seen Oct. 7 at

Keeneland, she

nevertheless

finished fast to be

fourth. The 6-year-

old has the

advantage of being

locally stabled for

trainer Nacho Correas, and she has drilled sharply for this

return, capped by a half-mile main track breeze in :48 flat (3/56)

last Saturday.

Augustin Stable=s Truly Together (Smart Strike) rates an upset

glance. A daughter of George Strawbridge=s champion turf mare

Forever Together (Belong to Me), she scored in three of her first

four trips to the post and ran a good second when returning

from a 19-month layoff in a Dec. 26 optional claimer at

Gulfstream.

KY DERBY FUTURE WAGER SUSPENDED ON

MONTAUK Wagering on ATDN Rising Star@ Montauk (Medaglia d=Oro) has

been suspended for the second of four pools of the 2018

GI Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens its three-day run

Friday at noon.

An ultra-impressive debut winner at Belmont in October,

Montauk=s connections decided to address a minor throat issue,

which would keep him out of the Run for the Roses May 5.

AThe ownership group and Todd [Pletcher] huddled up this

morning and we decided that we are going to address a minor

throat issue that will take him out of training for a few weeks,@

said co-owner Aron Wellman, president and founder of Eclipse

Thoroughbred Partners. AWe were already on a tight enough

schedule as it was and this will make him miss just enough time

to not be ready for the Derby. However, by doing what=s best

for the horse, we do hope to have a very serious animal on our

hands for the second half of the year.@ Cont. p10

KY Derby Future Wager Suspended on Montauk cont.

The official rules of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager do not

permit scratches of betting interests or refunds of wagers placed

during any of its four pools. Wagering will be suspended on a

betting interest in any of the respective pools if Churchill Downs

determines that the individual horse will not be able to

participate in the Kentucky Derby because of injury, illness or

other circumstance.

FOREVER UNBRIDLED PREPS FOR DUBAI Newly crowned champion Forever Unbridled (Unbridled=s

Song) breezed five furlongs in 1:01 at trainer Dallas Stewart=s

World Cup next month.

AWe=re just getting her ready,@ Stewart said. AIt was a really

good work like her basic works. She was solid the whole way.

[She] came back bucking and kicking, which is just what you

want to see. She=s back on schedule.@

As for what=s next for GI Clark H. winner Seeking the Soul

(Perfect Soul {Ire}), who was most recently fifth in the

GI Pegasus World Cup Jan. 27, Stewart said, AHe=s just chilling

out. We=ll start him back in the spring at Churchill. Probably the

[GII] Alysheba [S. May 4] or something like that.@

ATrainers Won=t Run Horses, So Why Aren=t Owners

Outraged?@

In Thursday=s TDN, we ran an op-ed by Bill Finley about the

decline of starts per year by American Thoroughbreds. Finley

asked for feedback, and we were inundated by the replies. Below

is a sampling.

Bill Finley's story was accurate and informative; the factors

behind the decrease in starts/horse need to be not only

addressed but also corrected. I was happy to see one reader

respond this morning with a comment about the "super trainer"

factor--why would a "super trainer" want to enter two horses in

the same race?

There is another factor directly related to field size that was

not addressed, the common complaint of "waiting for a race." I

have never spoken to a trainer or an owner that has not

complained about having to wait for a particular race to be

offered. It varies from track to track (CA complaints seem to be

primarily about a lack of CA-bred races, KY complaints seem to

be a lack of MSW long or NW2X, etc.), but every jurisdiction has

complaints. While I have never worked in the racing office, it

would appear that a simple survey of trainers at each track

would result in the needed races being written, which would

result in larger fields (benefitting the track and the bettor) and

more starts/horse (benefitting the owner and the trainer).

SMART STRIKE FILLY HAS THE RIGHT

>RESPONSE Breeze Easy LLC=s Smart Response (Smart Strike) was pounded

at the windows into 9-5 favoritism for this racetrack debut and

the expensive breeze-up purchase ran to the money in a

performance worthy of the >TDN Rising Star= designation Friday

afternoon at the Fair Grounds. Drawn gate two for the in-form

Adam Beschizza, the compact chestnut jumped straight into the

bridle and led them along through a fast opening quarter in

:22.15. Shaken up vigorously in upper stretch, she continued to

sprint away from her rivals into the final eighth of a mile and

cruised under the line four lengths to the good of longshot

firster Flat Meadow (War Chant). A $275,000 Keeneland

September yearling purchase, she worked an eighth of a mile in

:10 2/5 and was hammered down for $525,000 at last year=s

Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale, the most expensive of her late sire=s

eight juveniles to sell from his penultimate crop in 2017. Smart

Strike died in 2015 and is represented by four 2-year-olds from

his final crop. Smart Response is a daughter of Salty Response,

who graduated sprinting on Polytrack, cleared her first

allowance condition going long on the turf and whose best

career speed figure came in a five-length romp in the 2008

Lady=s Secret S. at Monmouth Park. Smart Response=s second

dam Lake Huron (Salt Lake) was responsible for two-time Grade

III winner Salty Strike (Smart Strike). Salty Response is the dam

of a yearling filly of this year by Declaration of War.

TELEKINESIS IMPRESSES FOR SECOND

>RISING STAR= TAG OF THE DAY Telekinesis (Ghostzapper) traveled wide throughout and got

the job done late to be the second >TDN Rising Star= from Fair

Grounds in consecutive races Friday. He was scheduled to make

his debut Jan. 28 here before flipping in the paddock and

becoming a late scratch.

The bay broke from his outside post as the 9-5 second choice

and traveled three wide down the backstretch, tracking

pacesetter Chuck=s Dream (Take Charge Indy) through a swift

opening quarter in :21.98. He stayed in the three path around

the far turn as he drew on even terms with the leader and

favored Nola Win (Elusive Quality) to make it three across the

track turning for home. They were still locked in battle until the

sixteenth pole when Telekinesis found another gear and kicked

clear to graduate by 3 1/4 lengths. Nola Win grabbed second.

Telekinesis, a $470,000 weanling purchase by Stonestreet at

the Keeneland November sale, hails from the same family as

MGSW Family Tree (Smart Strike) and GISW Dance Teacher

(Smarten). He is the second winner out of unraced Intentional

Cry, whose dam is MGSW Gold Mover (Gold Fever). She has a

juvenile filly named Syllable (Super Saver) and a yearling full-

sister to Telekinesis. She was bred back to that Adena Springs

stallion last year.

25YO ZVARA LEADS LATE ON NHC DAY 1By Lucas Marquardt

With two mandatory races to go at Day 1 of the 19th annual

National Horseplayers Championship, Jonathan Zvara had put

some distance between himself and the rest of the field on the

official leaderboard. Zvara had 146.80 points when the TDN

went to press, well ahead of second-place John Farrar at 131.00

points, and over 20 points up on third-placed Jeff Einardt.

Friday=s mandatory races didn=t produce any bombs, helping to

keep things close up until Zvara began to cash prices in optional

races. The 25-year-old Zvara is from Canfield, OH, and attends

Youngstown State University.

Day 2=s mandatory are:

TAMPA BAY 6 11:46 am

AQUEDUCT 6 12:30 pm

SANTA ANITA 3 1:00 pm

GULFSTREAM 10 1:43 pm

GULFSTREAM 11 2:16 pm

GULFSTREAM 12 2:49 pm

GOLDEN GATE 7 3:45 pm

SANTA ANITA 9 4:00 pm

A reminder on the contest format: during the first two days of

the tournament, contestants play eight mandatory races and 10

races of their choosing. The top 10% advance to Sunday=s

semifinal. The top 10 standing at the end of that round advance

to the Final Table, where they=ll have seven mandatory races--

no optionals--to determine the winner of the tournament.

There are plenty of recognizable industry names at the

contest. They include:

$ Gary Fenton (managing partner of Little Red Feather

Racing Club)

$ Jim Goodman (director of mutuels and simulcasting at

Keeneland)

$ Marshall Gramm (co-owner of Ten Strike Racing)

$ Bob Ike (longtime public handicapper in Southern

California)

$ Chris Larmey (head of our NHC Players= Committee)

$ Joe McKay (longtime jockey agent and handicapper)

$ John Nichols (Kentucky clocker)

$ Justin Nicholson (co-founder of the Equestricon horse

racing fan convention)

$ Tom Quigley (ATQ@) (Santa Anita VIP player concierge;

founder of HorsePlayer Magazine)

$ Vic Stauffer (Oaklawn track announcer)

$ Travis Stone (Aqueduct track announcer)

NHC, MEET THE TAAY The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has always operated on

the premise that horse welfare is a team sport, and the

organization is making its presence felt at the NHC for the first

time in Las Vegas this year.

AWe=ve been here in spirit, in the sense that we=ve had

information here, but we=ve never been here in person,@ said

Stacie Clark, operations consultant for the TAA. AWe=ve got

some exciting projects going on, and this is the heart of the

whole game--this is where we all get our purse money and

where we get our fans--and we felt it was time to better know

the players and do some networking.@

One of the most exciting TAA developments is a project

developed in concert with the People for the Ethical Treatment

of Animals (PETA), AmTote and The Stronach Group. Announced

last summer while still in development, the project gives the

opportunity for horse players cashing winning tickets at AmTote

machines the option of making a donation to the TAA.

AThe idea was to find a way for the player to give back at the

betting window,@ Clark explained. ASo when you put your

winning voucher in, you have the option to make a donation.

Depending on how much you=ve won, it could be $1, $5, $10,

etc. If you don=t want to, that=s fine, there=s a ANo thank you@

button. If you do, it gives you a receipt.@

The project was begun two years ago. It was tested at the

Pegasus World Cup in 2016, again at Laurel in the fall and finally

to the Breeders= Cup at Del Mar in November. Cont. p3

NHC Meet TAA cont.

AWe went through the whole Breeders= Cup without a hitch,@

said Clark.

In the last month, Santa Anita and Gulfstream have both

embraced the program, joining Laurel and Del Mar as the four

tracks where players have that option. The program could soon

be nationwide.

AIt can be available at all the tracks that carry AmTote

machines, we just have to go to those tracks and talk to them

about what we do, and ask them to turn the service on. The

NYRA tracks, for instance, have already inquired about it, so

we=ll go spend some time with Martin Panza and Chris Kay up

there.@

Clark said the project was a reason the TAA is making its

inaugural visit to the NHC.

AWhen we=re asking for money at the AmTote machines,

players should know who the TAA is and what we do,@ she said.

APlus the NTRA has always been great to the TAA, and we=ve

been the charity for the Eclipse Awards and, in kind, for this

handicapping contest.@

Clark said many players had already made cash donations at

the TAA table at the NHC, and several others had made pledges

should the win a cash prize at the NHC.

AWe=ve had a lot of people make promises, so let=s hope one

of them wins!@ Clark laughed.

cost connections a hefty $375,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton

Saratoga New York-Bred Sale, but was sent off as the very chilly

fourth betting favorite at 24-5. Drawn one from the outside in

this sextet, the bay stalked the pace from a three-deep perch

and began warming up to the task at the exit to the turn. In

front soon after, City Never Sleeps carried a daylight advantage

into the final eighth of a mile and galloped under the wire a

7 1/4-length graduate. The winner=s dam is an unraced half-

sister to GISP Lady Melesi (Colonial Affair) and did not produce

foals when bred to City Zip in 2015 and 2016. She was most

recently covered by Street Sense. In addition to calling the shots

on the career of the late City Zip, Linda Rice also conditioned the

back to his shortest career distance, the 16-1 shot drove through

early lead and opened a three-length cushion through an easy

:23.34 opening quarter. MGISW Mind Your Biscuits (Posse), who

was making his 5-year-old debut, began to rev up outside at the

quarter pole, but Conquest Windycity continued to battle that

rival on the inside and got his head down first at the wire for the

upset. The runner-up=s trainer was pleased enough with the

effort. AHe wanted to run, he wanted to do something,@ Chad

RUMOR RIDGE (f, 3, Yes It's True--Polo Ridge, by Wild Rush)

displayed good gate speed on her Jan. 13 debut over slightly

shorter and held well into the final furlong before settling for a

promising runner-up effort. Allowed to chase the early pace

from second this time around, the 11-5 chalk was roused to the

lead off the final corner and pulled readily clear through the

final furlong to graduate by 4 1/2 firm lengths. Piece of Candy

(Candy Ride {Arg}) lasted from second over the slow-starting

Sugar Curl (Curlin). Rumor Ridge is out of a half-sister to three

full stakes winners on the Maryland circuit, including Maryland

Million Turf hero Target Sighted (Not For Love). Sales history:

TENFOLD (c, 3, Curlin--Temptress, by Tapit) broke swiftly and

went straight to the front while pressured to his outside by

Twist Off (Curlin). Those two went side-by-side down the

backstretch through fractions of :23.73 and :47.72. It took until

the quarter pole for Tenfold to kick into another gear, but pulled

away passing the furlong marker despite racing a bit greenly and

was geared down crossing the wire a 5 3/4-length winner. Twist

Off was another 4 1/2 lengths clear of the rest of the field. The

winner=s third dam was 1995 champion grass mare and MGISW

Possibly Perfect (Northern Baby). This is the first foal out of

Temptress, who is a half to GSW Donegal Moon (Malibu Moon).

She also has a juvenile colt by Hard Spun, who sold for $105,000

at last year=s Fasig-Tipton October sale, and a yearling filly by

Candy Ride (Arg). Temptress was bred back to Curlin last season.

SOUTH BEACH (c, 4, Tapit--Bethan, by Giant's Causeway), who

topped the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-Year-Olds in Training

Sale on a bid of $1.8 million, made the most of his belated

racetrack debut with a handy and professional success Friday at

Oaklawn. The 9-5 post-time favorite settled in midfield while a

few paths off the inside rail and held his spot for the run around

the turn. Fourth, but within striking distance, when heads were

turned for home, South Beach swapped leads nicely at the

three-sixteenths and rolled over the top of the pacesetters en

route to a three-length victory. Produced by an unraced half-

sister to GISW and top sire Hard Spun (Danzig), South Beach was

audaciously bought back on a bid of $1.2 million at the 2015

Keeneland September sale, but rewarded his connections=

confidence after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 1/5 a couple

of days prior to the sale. The further female family includes

champion and Classic winner Little Current. Bethan is the dam of

a yearling colt by Flatter and was most recently bred to Tapit=s

son Constitution. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0. Lifetime Record:

DRAGON DREW (c, 3, Get Stormy--Thornhill, by Good and

Tough) was forwadly placed in his Dec. 28 bow sprinting over

this course before settling for a close fourth and was a latest

eighth after setting the pace in a rained-off maiden Jan. 13.

Ridden for speed yet again by James Graham, Dragon Drew

raced well within himself through an opening half-mile in a

leisurely :49.26. Still going comfortably up front, the bay faced a

final-furlong challenge from favored Time Flies By (Jimmy

Creed), but never looked in serious danger and crossed the line

1 1/4 lengths best. The winner is a full-brother to Storm the Hill,

SW & GSP, $181,145 and has a 2-year-old full-brother named

Western Hills. Thornhill was most recently bred back to Get

in midpack while traveling three wide into the clubhouse turn.

He continued in the four path around the far tun while picking

up ground and was within striking range at the quarter pole.

River Boyne took the lead passing the eighth pole and kicked

Three-Year Racehorse Depreciation Returns Retroactively for

2017 Fiscal Year:

President Trump signed into law Friday the Bipartisan Budget

Act, a bill that among other measures extends retroactively for

fiscal year 2017 uniform three-year racehorse depreciation, an

important tax provision supported by the National

Thoroughbred Racing Association that expired in 2016 alongside

certain other expired tax provisions. The bill also funds the

federal government until March 23.

Three-year depreciation is an investment incentive for

racehorse owners that had been in place for several years

before expiring at the end of 2016.

AWe wish to thank Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

for his continued support for our industry,@ said NTRA President

and CEO Alex Waldrop. AWe=ve worked with the Leader for over

a decade on our industry=s unique issues, and we appreciate his

continued efforts.@

Prior to the 2008 Farm Bill, which became effective Jan. 1,

2009, racehorses 24 months of age and younger when

purchased and placed in service, were depreciated on a

seven-year schedule that did not accurately reflect the length of

a typical racehorse=s career; only racehorses over 24 months old

were depreciated using a three-year schedule.

The NTRA will continue to advocate for tax policies that

accurately reflect our unique industry.
