Free  insight  and    analysis  for  business

11  areas  of  focus  to  2030,  says  WWF

And  we  now  know  more  about  pressure  points

NGOs  have  raised  awareness

And  brands,  traders,  others,  have  responded

Kuok  Khoon  Hong  –  Wilmar

Founder  and  Chairman  of  the  company  which  trades  45%  of  palm  oil  globally

A  values-‐driven  Asian  billionaire?  Why  not?

Today,  Indian-‐based  manufacturers  of  viscose  are  also  joining  in

Even  APRIL  are  rumoured  to  be  coming  to  the  table  very  soon

But  there’s  s6ll  a  long  way  to  go,  both  on  policy  and    target  development  and    actual  on  the  ground    progress

Turning  off  the  bulldozers  is  only  the  start  for  firms  such  as  APP

APP’s  1  million  hectare  commitment

APP  will  conserve  and  restore  1m  hectares  of  rainforest.  10  priority  landscapes  iden6fied

In  Sumartra,  just  north  of  Pekanbaru,  it  doesn’t  take  long  to  find  low-‐level  deforesta6on

Inside  the  ‘biosphere’

And  on  its  edge…

Illegal  conversion  of  secondary  forest  for  oil  palm

In  the  village,  but  it’s  not  enough

And  in  the  na6onal  park  nearby…

NGO  collabora6on  and  HCV/HSC  assessments  are  seen  as  part  of  the  solu6on

Mapping  technology  will  also  play  a  key  role

Pressure  on  governments  to  simplify  and  enforce    laws  is  another  major  challenge

Interna6onal  pressure  is  growing:  Singapore’s  Transboundary  Haze  law

Research  is  showing  us  how  important  land  protec6on  and  restora6on  is

In  summary..  The  opportuni6es  for  business  in  preven6ng  deforesta6on  and  encouraging  restora6on  are  threefold:    1)   To  beder  understand  supply  chains,  improve  resilience,  and  trust

via  policy,  targets,  ac2on  and  transparency  2)  To  help  governments  make  the  right  decisions  and  improve

enforcement  and  sustainable  livelihoods,  in  partnership  with  key  stakeholders

3)  To  make  a  significant  and  las6ng  contribu6on  to  tackling  global  climate  change  via  land  use  (400  PPM  CO2  to  280  PPM)  “To  be  on  the  right  side  of  history”

Some  companies  have  made  a  start,  others  are  catching  up.  There’s  a  long  way  to  go.  But  we  can  be  a  lot  more  op6mis6c  than  we  might  have  been  five  years  ago.  That’s  progress.
