DBriefly summarize the character and scope of the major modification.

Briefly summarize the rationale for the major modification.

Briefly summarize, as applicable, the implementation plan for the major modification (e.g. recruitment, retention, admissions, eligibility, transition, etc.)

Changing the IDM concentration to match the other concentration. This requires the addition of 0.5 credits.

The IDM concentration was previously changed to reduce the course load due to the difficulties faced by students taking SPPA and NPSIA courses in conjunction with Sprott courses. The current change provides more flexibility for the IDM students and provides a better foundation in IDM (creation of new IDM intro course). Students will be required to take only two courses with our partners - This flexibility and change permits the credits to be increased to the same level as the other concentrations.

This will affect students commencing in 2014-15.

Old Version Concentration in International Development Management (8.0 credits)

i. 4.25 credits in core courses. IDM students must take ITIS 5403, TOMS 5303 and TOMS 5304 (see below) in place of ITIS 5401, TOMS 5301 and TOMS 5302

ii. 2.25 credits in concentration courses consisting of 1.5 credits of IDMG courses2 offered by the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA), School of Public Policy & Administration (SPPA) and 0.75 credits in the Sprott School of Business as specified below.

iii. 0.5 credit in electives from the list of elective courses3 iv. 1.0 credit in BUSI 5999 Internship 1 .

New Version:

None Rationale: The IDM concentration was previously changed to reduce the course load due to the difficulties faced by students taking SPPA and NPSIA courses in conjunction with Sprott courses. The current change provides more flexibility for the IDM students and provides a better foundation in IDM (creation of new IDM intro course). Students will be required to take only two courses with our partners - This flexibility and change permits the credits to be increased to the same level as the other concentrations. Impact The proposed change will have no resource impact – but will require IDM students to take an additional 0.5 credits

Concentration in International Development Management (8.0 credits)

iii. 4.25 credits in core courses. IDM students must take ITIS 5403, TOMS 5303 and TOMS 5304 (see below) in place of ITIS 5401, TOMS 5301 and TOMS 5302

9. Program Structure and Variations – addition of Accelerated stream

Old Version None New Version 1. M.B.A. – Accelerated stream (6.0 credits)

i. 1.75 credits in compulsory core courses1 ii. 3.25 credits in elective courses iii. 1.0 credit in BUSI 5999 [1.0] Internship 2 . iv. 0.0 credit in BUSI 5XXX [0.0] MBA Skills Workshops3

2. M.B.A. – Accelerated stream with one concentration (6.0 credits) i. 1.75 credits in compulsory core courses1 ii. 2.25 credits in a chosen concentration iii. 1.0 credit in elective courses iv. 1.0 credit in BUSI 5999 [1.0] Internship 2. v. 0.0 credit in BUSI 5XXX [0.0] MBA Skills Workshops3

3. M.B.A. - Accelerated stream with two concentrations (7.25 credits for full-time stream)

i. 1.75 credits in compulsory core courses1 ii. 4.5 credits in the concentrations: 2.25 credits in each of two concentrations with the

exception of the International Development Management Concentration.

iii. 1.0 credit in BUSI 5999 Internship 2 . iv. 0.0 credit in BUSI 5XXX [0.0] MBA Skills Workshops3

Notes 1 The required core courses will be based on previous coursework. Courses may vary from one

student to another and will depend on their undergraduate program, grades obtained in the relevant undergraduate courses and their chosen concentration

2 Students with less than two (2) years of relevant professional employment experience must successfully complete the Internship in order to graduate. Students with two or more years relevant work experience may apply for an exemption.

3 Non-credit required skills workshop Rationale:

The MBA is designed for students with undergraduate degrees in any discipline and therefore covers introductory material which would be covered in a 4 year business degree. Currently, students with a business degree must take introductory courses along with students who have never taken a business course. Students in the Accelerated MBA would still be required to take 5.0 credits (1.75 credits of core and 3.25 credits of concentrations and/or electives) plus 1.0 credit Internship (if applicable). A previous version of this change was approved by the Sprott Faculty Board and approved in principle by the FGPA P&P. Impact: The Accelerated MBA will shorten the program for some students, reducing potentially reducing the number of sections offered in core courses, thereby reducing the need for faculty and classrooms. However, it is expected that the program will attract more business graduates, increasing the number of sections in concentration an elective courses.

10. MBA Courses - Add Course BUSI 5XXX to replace MBA Skills workshop Old Version None New Version MBA Courses BUSI 5XXX [0.0] MBA Skills Workshops Rationale The MBA skills workshop (MBA bootcamp, MBA orientation) has been a required part of the degree since 2008. The administration of this degree requirement has been challenging, as it has no course code. To better track and administer the workshops, a zero credit course has been created. Impact The proposed change will have no resource or substantive program impact.

0.5 credits in International Development from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA), to be approved by the School of Business and NPSIA.

0.5 credits from the School of Public Policy & Administration (SPPA), with permission of the School of Business and SPPA.

Rationale The proposed change greatly simplifies the IDM concentration and provides greater flexibility in the program. The addition of the two TOMS courses to the concentration (one of which is an existing course), will serve as the culmination of the concentration (something that is designed into all other concentrations). The partnerships with NPSIA and SPPA have not provided the cost savings that were expected – by changing required courses into “choices”, it is expected that IDM students will be distributed throughout our partners’ courses, thus reducing the burden on them and reducing our costs (we have been required to offer and pay for extra sections of some courses to accommodate Sprott students). We further propose to remove the cross-listings of all IDMG courses. The cross-listings include many courses that are never offered, increase the administrative burden and are no longer required as we are providing students with choices from our partner programs. Briefly summarize the rationale for the major modification.

Briefly summarize, as applicable, the implementation plan for the major modification (e.g. recruitment, retention, admissions, eligibility, transition, etc.)

The Accelerated MBA will shorten the program for some students, potentially reducing the number of sections offered in core courses, thereby reducing the need for faculty and classrooms. However, it is expected that the program will attract more business graduates, increasing the number of sections in concentration and elective courses.

It is planned for this to be available for applicants commencing in 2014-15.

Adding the MA in Geography to the programs participating in the specialization in African Studies to give students working on African themes the option of doing the specialization.

To enable the possibility for MA Geography students to participate in the Collaborative MA in African Studies, given that there are DGES faculty members with research interests in Africa who supervise graduate students. Being listed as one of a series of programs that participate in this Specialization also avoids a possible disadvantage for DGES students over those departments that do offer this Specialization. The requirements have been crafted to accommodate the fact that our program, similar to PECO and LAWS, do not currently offer courses that with recognized African Studies content.

Students admitted to the masters in DGES will now be eligible to apply to the Specialization in African Studies. The MA Geography will be included in the annual cycle of recruiting and selecting students for the specialization.

Briefly summarize the rationale for the major modification.

Briefly summarize, as applicable, the implementation plan for the major modification (e.g. recruitment, retention, admissions, eligibility, transition, etc.)

The addition of a five-credit coursework option. Women’s and Gender Studies is a participating academic unit in the collaborative master’s with a specialization in African Studies – admission to the specialization is restricted to students in the either the thesis option or research essay option and not the proposed course-only option.

The course work option allows greater flexibility. It is particularly attractive for students who are pursuing a terminal MA. The MA program has been in operation for two years and there has been demonstrated demand for a course work alternative. With the wide range of elective courses (across many units) available to the students, this will not require additional resources. We anticipate that current courses will be better subscribed making this a more efficient use of resources.

Students being recruited for 2014-15 will be told about this option. Students still in the program in September 2014 will be given the option to transfer to this option (which is the norm for graduate programs).

Rationale

The course work option allows greater flexibility. It is particularly attractive for students who are pursuing a terminal MA. The MA program has been in operation for two years and there has been demonstrated demand for a course work alternative. With the wide range of elective courses (across many units) available to the students, this will not require additional resources. We anticipate that current courses will be better subscribed making this a more efficient use of resources.

DBriefly summarize the character and scope of the major modification.

Briefly summarize the rationale for the major modification.

Briefly summarize, as applicable, the implementation plan for the major modification (e.g. recruitment, retention, admissions, eligibility, transition, etc.)

The new concentration in Art Exhibition and Curatorial Studies will permit a small selected group of MA students to have specialized hands-on training and the acknowledgment of this of their academic record and diploma. In creating this concentration, Art History addresses an increasing demand for curatorial, professionally oriented programs among art history graduate students and allows us to be competitive in a growing field. The concentration will have an anchor in a 0.5 credit core course that exposes students to professionals in the field and consists of active learning in the form of workshops in exhibition creation. This will be taken in addition to the core course for the Art History MA, as well as 1.0 credit of practicum experience.

See attached executive summary.

The concentration in Art Exhibition and Curatorial Practices will be a flagship program for a proposed interdisciplinary curatorial diploma program. We hope to achieve two tangible enrolment goals: increasing our student admission by two to three students per year, and admitting a greater percentage of top-tier students who are looking for a program that combines solid art history research and theory with practical skills valuable in the employment worlds of museums, galleries and other art institutions.

See attached executive summary.

As part of our regular recruitment, we will be accepting three students into this program each year. See attached executive summary.

MA in Art History: Proposal for a new Concentration in “Art Exhibition and Curatorial Studies” Executive summary The concentration in Art Exhibition and Curatorial Studies is a natural development of the MA in Art History. To a great extent, it is a formalized expression of what we excel in and, to a great degree what we are best known for. In creating this concentration, Art History addresses an increasing demand for curatorial, professionally oriented programs among art history graduate students and allows us to be competitive in a growing academic field. The concentration enters this growth field with a track record of excellence and a competitive edge based on our strong and long-standing practicum program, success in student placement in the field, relevant expertise of the majority of our faculty, and the wealth of institutions and professional partners in Ottawa and beyond. Our situation in Ottawa makes the opportunities for students in the museum and curatorial fields unparalleled in the country. National institutions such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Library and Archives of Canada and the Canadian Museum of Civilization have long been practicum and professional partners, with numbers of our adjunct professors coming from their ranks with years of experience. Restructuring in the Carleton University Art Gallery - an impressive resource with over 27,000 objects for student research - will open up a small section to community curating projects, the curatorial laboratory, that will be a showcase for successful student projects in the proposed concentration. The concentration will have an anchor in a 0.5 credit core course that exposes students to professionals in the field and consists of active learning in the form of workshops in exhibition creation. This will be taken in addition to the core course for the Art History MA, as well as 1.0 credit of practicum experience. Another required course will be ARTH 5218, Museum Studies and Curatorial Practice, a long-running topics course. The concentration in Art Exhibition and Curatorial Practices embodies Carleton University’s mission to give students a competitive edge as leaders in their field by instituting at the heart of the program a core course that functions as a professional workshop on exhibition curating, where students create and critique exhibitions, competing for the opportunity to actualize their show in the curatorial laboratory of the Carleton University Art Gallery. It will be integrally engaged in the community as all students will be doing practicum projects in regional institutions, at the same time giving our students an edge in the job market when they graduate.

The Concentration in Art Exhibition and Curatorial Studies and the proposed Carleton Strategic Plan Curating art exhibitions is a creative mode of knowledge generation and a public-oriented cultural endeavour. Students in the new concentration will be active contributors to the Creative Class, fostering sustainable communities that Carleton’s new draft strategic plan Sustainable Communities – Global Prosperity defines as “culturally vibrant”. Centring the concentration on professional skills and practicum projects, Art Exhibition and Curatorial Practices provides graduate students with “real life experiences that bring the classroom to the world and the world to the classroom” creating “Innovative educational environments [that] incorporate hands-on research, community engagement, work experience, and immersive learning.” Combining practical, hands-on experience with the historical and critical skills of art history gives our students a breadth of transferable skills. Our MA in Art History makes intensive use of the resources of the national Capital region, our numerous art and cultural institutions, and the extensive expertise at our doorstep that has long been at the core of Art History’s excellent track record of student employment in the museum, gallery and cultural fields. The new concentration will further intensify these aspects of our program, while responding to the new professional climate in museum work, increasing the employability of our graduates. Our students will be engaged in a program that will not only rely heavily on collaboration with institutions and experts in the “real world” beyond our campus, but they will be active agents in that greater world. Through its focus on the critical and creative dissemination of knowledge through the objects of art, and in its marriage of art historical and practical skills the proposed concentration in Art Exhibition and Curatorial Practices embodies key objectives of the draft strategic plan, namely “a learning environment that fosters and nourishes critical and creative inquiry; knowledge preservation, creation, dissemination, and transfer; employability through the development of transferrable skills and intellectual capabilities; and the education of highly skilled and qualified citizens.” International and National Profile of Curatorial Studies

In the last ten years, programs in Curatorial Studies have exploded in North America, Europe and the UK, Australia and Asia. As the New York Times noted in a 2012 article entitled Who Wants to be a Curator, “And as the role of the curator has become an increasingly desirable one, the number of courses available to study curating has increased.” Following the growing popularity of programs in curatorial studies, the College Art Association, the largest professional society for Art Historians, published a set of guidelines in 2009.

Curatorial Studies programs have been gaining popularity with students seeking

3

to enter a more competitive job market and increasingly complex institutional structures requiring more specialized practical training. Additionally, programs in curatorial studies have tended to attract professional or international students seeking rigorous professional training and accreditation. To cite but one example of the market for such programs, an estimated 2000 museums are currently being built in China; all of which will require trained specialists. This pattern is being reproduced around the world, as developing nations seek to establish their cultural identities on the world stage, aided too by an increasingly global interest in international contemporary art. The results range from the creation of entire cultural villages such as the one being built in Abu Dhabi (Saadiyat Cultural District, which will have branches of the Louvre and the Guggenheim), to the establishment of International Biennale from Gwangju to Johannesburg.

The Whitney Independent Study Program, established in 1967, is the oldest of the curatorial programs in the world. L’École du magasin, Grenoble, which opened its doors in 1987, was the first European school for curators. These two programs set a standard for curatorial studies programs operating outside of art history departments in universities, and were followed by the establishment of a joint PhD program between the Institute of Fine Arts, New York and the Metropolitan Museum in the 1980s, a few programs in the 1990s, and many more after 2000. With the notable exception of NYU, however, these programs have typically trained students in curatorial studies without providing adequate art historical training. In recent years, there has been a move within top-ranked international institutions including Bard College, Columbia, Royal College of Art, Goldsmith’s College, and UBC, to provide curatorial studies programs, although these programs also have a tendency to favour training in critical theory over art history.

Responding to feedback received from museum professionals indicating the lack of art historical training as a weakness of curatorial studies programs, the proposed concentration in curatorial studies at Carleton University is designed to be taken as part of a Master’s degree in Art History, providing both art historical and practical curatorial training at once.

The proposed M.A. concentration in curatorial studies will provide prospective graduate students with the practical training and professional accreditation that they need for a changing marketplace, while also grounding their studies in the discipline of Art History. A rare combination, this concentration also has the potential to attract international students seeking to populate the rapidly expanding global cultural industry.

Program Distinctiveness: Comparable Programs in Ontario and Canada

While there are already a number of curatorial studies graduate programs in the country, most maintain identities somewhat separate from their art history programs, focusing more on critical theory than on art history.

Outside of Ontario, the only program in Canada that offers a curatorial program is:

University of British Columbia (MA in Critical and Curatorial Studies)

Within Ontario, there are three established graduate curatorial programs:

University of Toronto (Masters in Museum Studies, Faculty of Information) University of Toronto, St George Campus (Masters in Visual Studies with a studio or curatorial stream) OCAD University (MFA in Criticism and Curatorial Practice) York University (Curatorial Practice Diploma+ MA in Art History)

Additionally, there are four Ontario universities that offer undergraduate training in Curatorial Studies:

University of Toronto Scarborough (BA in Curatorial Studies) Brock University BA in Visual Arts, with a concentration in Curatorial Studies OCAD University (BFA in Criticism and Curatorial Practice) Western University (BA in Museum and Curatorial Studies)

Of the programs available in Ontario, OCAD and University of Toronto do not offer MA level training in art history. The University of Toronto offers a Master of Museum Studies (MMSt) within its faculty of information studies. Housed in a faculty that also offers degrees in archives and records management, critical information studies, as well as library and information science, this is an excellent program that trains students in museum studies with a heavy emphasis on collections management and digital heritage. The program is both practical and academic, but lacks art historical training. Our proposed program, like the one at York University, offers BOTH the intellectual formation of an art history degree and the practical training of a curatorial studies program. UBC's program offers neither art history nor practical training, but is concerned more with establishing critical discourses about exhibitions and museological practices.

Student demand While statistics on student demand are speculative, Art History is proposing this new concentration as a result of experiencing an increasing incidence of prospective graduate students inquiring whether we offer curatorial programs. A small poll of recent and current students confirmed our anecdotal impressions and affirmed that Art History MA students and alumni are enthusiastic about the proposed new concentration in Art Exhibitions and Curatorial Practices. Over the years, many of our students enter the MA program specifically because it offers links with cultural institutions in the National Capital Region enabling students to garner practical experience and professional contacts while

completing their degrees. The proposed concentration would enhance and expand these qualities. As Rebecca Basciano (MA 2013) responded:

Practical experience and knowledge is extremely valuable to employers and I believe the additional coursework is worthwhile. Being exposed to a variety of positions (collections management, exhibition design…etc) is important for understanding and appreciating how an institution functions as a whole. A wide range of exposure may also help students figure out the type of work they are drawn to the most.

In the words of Sarah Eastman (MA candidate, Art History): Yes, I would have been interested in a specialization in Art Exhibition Practices. From the description you provided it sounds like it would include a lot of useful and practical skills…While the practicum does offer a great opportunity to gain experience, it is still somewhat limited. What a student learns very much depends on the placement, and there isn't always time to learn about all of the specifics of creating an exhibit or managing a collection. Having a course that covers that kind of information would be great.

Employability As noted elsewhere in this document, the Art History program at Carleton University has long maintained strong relationships with a number of cultural institutions in the National Capital Region. In a small poll, members of the professional staff of several institutional partners endorsed Carleton’s distinctive blend of a strong academic program in Art History with the enhanced practical experience offered through this proposed concentration. Below are two excerpts from their correspondence:

Your course additions are highly relevant in curatorial studies and other museum related work and we would certainly consider someone with such background prior to other candidates. I personally think that any objective to bring University curriculum more in line with the reality of the work is the way of the future and can only be very useful for the students on a daily basis. [Louise Renaud, Manager, Resource Centre, Business Partnerships and Information Management (BPIM), Canadian Museum of Civilization] I applaud Carleton's effort to offer more specialized training to their graduate students, to enhance their knowledge and skills and to make them more appealing to potential employers. When I hire, I often look for that extra focus or drive (or whatever you want to call it) - be it an academic designation, or internship/professional/or volunteer experience - that makes the candidate stand out from the rest. With such a highly

competitive job market, every little bit helps…. I look for someone with passion and commitment, who has gone the extra mile to gain exposure to their field. Simply put, the CV that includes arts-related volunteer work, internships, event attendance, and part-time jobs will grab my attention….The two courses you are proposing - the Art Forum and the Art Exhibition - fit that bill well, with their practical focus. [Megan Richardson, Chief, Education and Public Programs, National Gallery of Canada] We are always keen to hire people with practical experience and would certainly be open to hiring individuals with such a designation [the proposed specialization]. I know from my own career path that I learned everything "practical" on the job(s), and these are challenging skills to teach in the abstract. [Sandra Dyck, Director, Carleton University Art Gallery]

We are reasonably assured that students graduating from an MA in Art History with a concentration in Art Exhibition and Curatorial Practices will have enhanced opportunities for employment in the field, particularly for, but not limited to, those students who intend to go into professional careers in an art institution rather than to further graduate work in a PhD. According to the Canadian government Department of Human Resources and Skills Development, the prospects for employment in the field are good, projecting that over the 2011-2020 period, in the area of librarians, conservators, curators and archivists, job openings are expected to exceed job seekers. (http://www23.hrsdc.gc.ca/[email protected]?tid=62, accessed August 14, 2013). Furthermore, in this age in which visual, multi-media, and technologically-driven dissemination of knowledge is predominant, skills in art exhibition and curation have a much broader applicability. In “Who wants to be a Curator?” published in the New York Times (October 2012), it was said that: “Today, dedicated programs in curating studies are flourishing around the world. And, in an era where personal Web sites and blogs mean almost anyone can “curate” a public display, these increasingly specialized degrees are becoming essential for those who wish to pursue a career in curating.” Students who take the MA in Art History with a concentration in Art Exhibition and Curatorial Practices will have up-to-date transferable skills, including mastery in the analysis and generation of meaning through visual material, combined with a critical and historical understanding that will enable them to make creative, thoughtful, and informed contributions to new forms of knowledge creation and dissemination. These are skills that are highly transferable in the new economy, indeed the entrepreneurial independent curator is on the rise and forms a new professional niche that our graduates will be able to fill (Melissa Milgrom, “Behind the Scenes; Independent Curators: Have Art, Will Travel,” NY Times, April 24, 2002).

Impact on existing programs The new concentration will have minimal impact on other existing programs, as it will be housed entirely within Art History. Resources The concentration, with one new 0.5 credit new core course, calls for minimal reassigning of resources within Art History, is completely assimilable within our current plan of course rotations, and therefore requires no additional funding. The other new course integrated into this proposal, ARTH 5xxx, Directed Art Exhibition, is a variant on our existing Directed Readings course option, and therefore would be an alternative rather than an additional course that is, furthermore, by its nature limited by the time and space available for student exhibitions in the curatorial lab of CUAG. Because the concentration is based on coursework and practica, the proposed increase in intake of 3 students a year does not require additional thesis supervisions and does not require an increase in budgetary requirements. Space No new space requirements will be requested.

DBriefly summarize the character and scope of the major modification.

Briefly summarize the rationale for the major modification.

Briefly summarize, as applicable, the implementation plan for the major modification (e.g. recruitment, retention, admissions, eligibility, transition, etc.)

The modification eliminates the three fields - Specialized Print Reporting, Broadcast Journalism and Online Journalism, for the MJ 10-credit program to keep pace with the changing nature of journalism in which these distinct areas are now all merging online. It therefore makes no sense to continue to ask students to designate one when they have to now be proficient in all

Changes required as a result of Cyclical Program Review. The field structure is being eliminated but students must designate the media format in which they choose to do their Master's Research Project. It can be done in text-only, online, video or audio format. Additional instruction specific to the basic tenets of those formats (text-based, broadcast-based) is provided to ensure students have the appropriate theoretical grounding and analytical long-form writing skills to, for instance, construct a successful 20-minute audio documentary or in-depth text piece. For that reason, although we no longer will have fields, we ask students to take one course related to their MRP media format. That is the only MRP-based requirement that remains, and it ensures students have the format-specific critical thinking skills and professional expertise to complete the capstone project of the Master of Journalism program in their format of choice.

This change in the fields can be implemented immediately, bringing the description of our program into line with how we have been operating for the past couple of years. It will have no impact on any of the areas noted above so there is no need for an implementation plan.

The Master of Journalism program now draws about 120 applications a year for 20 positions. This change is expected to have no impact on those numbers.

About the Program

The emphasis in the 10.0-credit M.J. program is on advanced professional education and related coursework for those who are or intend to become practicing journalists in the news media. In practical terms, this entails both the polishing of professional journalistic skills to a high level of proficiency and advanced education.

There is also a five-credit M.J. program for those with a B.J. (Honours) or equivalent or at least five years of professional experience in journalism.

Academic Regulations

See the General Regulations section of this Calendar.

Admission Requirements

Most applicants will be admitted to the First year of a two-year course of study, but some may qualify for admission directly to the five-credit program (see below). An admissions committee, including the supervisor of graduate studies, will determine the admissions qualifications of each applicant.

A student who holds a bachelor's or master's degree from a recognized university in a field other than journalism may be admitted to the first year of study if he or she achieved at least high honours standing.

International students whose first language is not English need TOEFL scores of at least 250 CBT or 600, IELTS scores of at least 7 in all components, or CAEL Assessment scores of at least 70, or acceptable certification that the language of instruction in their most recently completed undergraduate or graduate degree was English. Such students who complete the core first year, outlined below, and meet the requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, Section 11 of the General Regulations section of this Calendar, may proceed to second year.

A limited number of spaces will be made available for direct admission to a five-credit M.J. program. Students must normally possess one of the following qualifications to be considered for this advanced admission:

SAPC2Senate January 31, 2014

Page 63: Programs - Carleton University - Canada's Capital University€¦ · 2. Admission Requirements – add GRE as alternative to GMAT X 3. Admission Requirements - change requirements

• a B.J. (Honours) or the equivalent with high second-class standing, or a degree in another discipline from a recognized university plus at least five years of professional experience in journalism, or long and distinguished professional experience in journalism.

• Students with suitable professional qualifications but no degree may occasionally be admitted to a program in which they take a required number of undergraduate courses in addition to the M.J. program.

Admission will be selective. Admission will not be guaranteed to all who meet the published minimum requirements, as there are many more qualified applicants each year than there are available spaces.

Applicants who have a three-year journalism degree with high honours standing may be admitted to a first year made up largely of approved courses from the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences and Public Affairs. Such students may proceed to the second year of study if they have achieved high honours standing.

Program Requirements

Candidates admitted to the first year of the Master of Journalism program must complete the following courses before proceeding to the second year of study:

A new 0.5 credit requirement SOWK 5000 Foundations in Structural Social Work is introduced to the Foundation Year (year l), replacing one of the electives that had been offered in the Advanced Year. An additional half credit will be required from existing social work courses in the Foundation Year (year l) and the course work requirement will decrease from 2.0 to 1.0 credits in the Advanced Year (year ll) for both the thesis option and the course-only option.

The School of Social Work calendar changes for the 2014-15 graduate calendar are being submitted to reflect the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE) accreditation standards.

The current cohort is completing what will become the new required course as an elective and will have the opportunity to take the full eleven credits as is most convenient through the two year program. 2014 cohort will participate in the new program format.

Master of Social Work

About the Program

The Master of Social Work program is based on an analytical and critical approach to social work practice, and to knowledge related to practice. The program examines the structural context of personal and social problems and of social work practice itself. The structural context refers to the interaction between individuals and the social, political, and economic dimensions of society. The program focuses on the development of social work practices that change the interactions between people and structural contexts.

The curriculum is organized into two concentrations:

• Direct Intervention: with individuals, families, small groups, and communities; and • Social Administration and Policy: an examination of the political, economic, and social context

within which social policy is made.

PhD in Social Work

About the Program

The substantive focus of the PhD program is theory, application and practice of structural social work and an in-depth understanding of social justice and human rights and the underlying structural issues. Structural social work understands social problems as embedded in structural factors and posits that: social change occurs only through social and political action; the structures of domination are consciously/unconsciously reproduced through people's everyday activities; the link between structure and agency is dialectical and that therefore intervention occurs simultaneously at the individual and societal levels. Research is encouraged in social organization, social policy, social practices or links among all three. The PhD in Social Work normally will be taken on a full-time basis. The core course work and qualifying exam are completed in the first 12 months of the program and are designed to assist students in locating and developing their research projects. The curriculum is focused solely on the field of structural social work. The course work and qualifying exam must be completed in the first 12 months of the program and are designed to assist students in locating and developing their research projects.

Voluntary closure of Journalism with Concentration in Psychology program.

The School was asked in the past by APCC to discontinue this program as part of an effort to standardize student choices towards double majors/combined honours. As well psychology no longer lists this concentration in the calendar. This will not have a negative effect on students since those who want Psychology in their program combine Journalism and Psychology in a double major/combined honours.

Admission would be suspended immediately. A transition plan would be developed for students in program -cube data indicates two students in first year and one in second year. As all courses continue to be offered in-program students will be able to complete.

Voluntary closure of minor in French Interdisciplinary Studies

We propose the elimination of this minor because we rarely offer sufficient courses for students to complete the required 4 credits. Furthermore, the types of courses offered under the FINS course code are quite varied and the accumulation of 4 such credits does not add up to a coherent sequence of courses. Finally, very few students express interest in this minor.

No students are currently registered.

Program name change: Geography with Concentration in Physical Geography - B.Sc. Honours to Physical Geography - B.Sc. Honours Minor name change: Minor in Geography: Physical Geography to Minor in Physical Geography

Program name change: The new program name will better represent the program content and will be consistent with the recent change to the Geomatics program, now named Geomatics – B.Sc. Honours. Minor name change: The new minor program element name will better represent the program content and will be consistent with the proposed change to the B.Sc. program name change.

Name change effective for 2014-15. Students that are continuing in the program or minor and wish to switch to the new name may do on Carleton Central through change of program element (COPE).

2014-2015 Undergraduate Calendar Program Changes Note: The proposed changes detailed below are the result of a comprehensive review of the BA programs that was undertaken in 2012-2013, which included interviews with instructors and several faculty meetings. Overall, the proposed changes are modest, but include the addition of two new courses at the second year (which is offset in part by the elimination of a third-year course). Given changes in other programs offered by DGES (and the elimination of GEOG/GEOM 4904), no new resources are needed to implement these proposed changes. The two new second-year courses that we are proposing are aimed at providing a stronger, more engaging program for students and to respond to strong interest in two important fields in human geography that are currently not prominent - climate change and urban studies - that we feel will have broad appeal to students across campus and that will help us in our recruitment efforts to attract new students to Carleton.

Name change: Minor in Muslim Studies to Minor in Islamic Studies.

The rationale for this name change is that "Islamic" is more in keeping with advances in the field of religious studies. "Muslim" is language that is out of date.

Name change effective for 2014-15. Students that are continuing in the minor and wish to switch to the new name of the minor may do on Carleton Central through change of program element (COPE).

DBriefly summarize the character and scope of the major modification.

Briefly summarize the rationale for the major modification.

Briefly summarize, as applicable, the implementation plan for the major modification (e.g. recruitment, retention, admissions, eligibility, transition, etc.)

This common course for Mechanical and Aerospace engineering students will replace the current capstone design courses (AERO 4907, MECH 4917 and MECH 4907) in the Aerospace, Biomedical and Mechanical, Mechanical, and Mechanical with Concentration in Integrated Manufacturing programs.

In practice, there is no change to the way in which the capstone design projects are offered. The new common course designation provides: 1) a common coordinated project description for MAE programs – unified expectations for all MAE students; 2) improves student choices and interdisciplinary opportunities amongst projects; 3) projects will be defined as sections within the common course code; 4) accommodates future growth and expansion of capstone projects for MAE; 5) simplifies scheduling and student/faculty assignment to large team projects.

An implementation plan will be coordinated between engineering and the registrar's office to ensure the new course is captured in the programs.

Delete Course: MECH 4907 Old Version: MECH 4907 [1.0 credit] Engineering Project Students are required to complete a major project in engineering analysis, design, development or research. Opportunities to develop initiative, self-reliance, creative ability and engineering judgment. The results must be submitted in a comprehensive report with appropriate drawings, charts, bibliography, etc. Prerequisite(s): completion of, or concurrent registration in MECH 4003, and fourth-year status in the Mechanical Engineering program. New Version:

MAAE 4907 [1.0 credit] Engineering Design Project Team project in the design of an aerospace, biomedical, mechanical, or sustainable energy system. Opportunity to develop initiative, engineering judgement, self-reliance, and creativity in a team environment. Results submitted in a comprehensive report as well as through formal oral presentations.

Prerequisite(s): fourth-year status in Engineering and completion of, or concurrent registration in, AERO 4003 or AERO 4842 or MECH 4003 or MECH 4013 or SREE 4001. Certain projects may have additional prerequisites.
