DIY Chunky Wrap: Loop-Knit Class Cost: Varies.

• Wraps require two skeins per person (avg cost per skein: $6.99). You can also reduce program costs by asking participants to bring two skeins of chunky yarn to the program. This will reduce expenses to $15-$20 for the cost of demonstration supplies.

• teen, adults • encourages social connections; community building • supports large motor-skills • supports well-being, encourages mindfulness with repetitive motions

Supplies Needed:

• 2 skeins of yarn (any color), per wrap. • The yarn we used is from Hobby Lobby

Time Needed: • 1 hour

Resources:

• Originally inspired by a chunky blanket class program model found on ProgrammingLibrarian.com at: http://www.programminglibrarian.org/programs/diy-chunky-knit-blanket-class

o The original blanket project might be cost-prohibitive and takes longer than an hour. A wrap is a less expensive option and can be completed during a one-hour program session.

• We found the loop method to be less intimidating than any arm-wrap method. It simply consists of tying a knot and pulling the yarn through the loops. Minimal coordination required!

• Yarn Bee Eternal Bliss yarn: https://www.hobbylobby.com/Yarn-Needle-Art/Yarn/Taupe-Yarn-Bee-Eternal-Bliss-Yarn/p/80842876

• It’s not necessary to follow a pattern for this project. But it you are a pattern person, you can access a free pattern at https://blueskyfibers.com/ https://blueskyfibers.com/product/arm-knit-wrap/ (PDF included in this handout.)

o Create an account to access more free fiber patterns

Instructions: • Unroll yarn. https://youtu.be/KWBDLmrOrgU • Make a knot. Pull yarn through the loop. Make all loops 4 fingers wide.

https://youtu.be/x0DmL1SQGPA • Continue process until you create 9 loops for the first row. As you work, set piece

on the table. Count your loops and ensure they’re consistent size. Continue making rows to your desired wrap length. https://youtu.be/3unzVVKdmas

• To end the piece, pull yarn through two loops at a time. https://youtu.be/fI65jEFmqEU

• To connect a new skein of yarn, simply tie the two ends together. https://youtu.be/KfGlqQAeGwg

Additional Information:

Chunky Blankets:

• Retail classes average $65.00 per person • Take about 2.5 hours to make • Require 4 skeins of yarn

Chunky Wraps:

• Take an hour or less to make • Require 2 skeins of yarn

Wal-Mart is less expensive, but skeins don’t go on sale. Wal-Mart’s yarn tends to be super soft, but that also means it’s not as durable.

Hobby Lobby yarn goes on sale - often as much as 30% off. Coupons can sometimes take it down 50%.

Chunky Rugs are also quick projects: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1pBg8sJNM0
