EXPLORING TECHNOLOGY & BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

PLASTIPOLIS has been off icially appointed in 2005, as France’s competitiveness cluster for the plastics and composites industry sector.Plastipolis has now more than 400 active members (industrial firms, R&D centers, universities, training centers, institutions) including a large numberof small and medium size companies. In 2019, Plastipolis has been confirmedby the French Government and Regions as the only Innovation and Competitiveness cluster for plastics and composites industry.

Aramco’s long-term strategy is to expand the company’s downstream activities by unlocking growth opportunities from nonmetallic materials, thereby extracting maximum value across the hydrocarbon value chain. With increases in demand expected to come from petrochemicals, Aramco is planning to shift 2 million barrels per day toward the development of integrated refining and chemicals production. Through developments such as nonmetallic materials, Aramco is looking to establish itself as a leading petrochemical and energy enterprise.

Oil based nonmetallic products are potential solutions for many of our industry’sChallenges, as innovations allow for the development of new products and solutionsused globally to build a better quality of life.The 2nd Nonmetallics Symposium will explore trends and opportunities for polymersin different sectors such as building and construction, packaging, photovoltaics,automotive, and oil & gas. The Symposium also presents a chance to meet with representatives of our sponsorAramco, one of the world’s largest energy and chemicals companies. After a firstedition held in Tokyo, Japan, this symposium will take place on December 17 and 18in Lyon, France. 4M is commercializing the world’s first large-scale carbon fiber plasma oxidation oven. 4M’s technology will enable the production of high performance and low-cost carbon fiber, providing this exploding industry a cost-effective way to increase production to meet the projected 300% increase over the next 10 years.

Carbon fibers (CFs) with their use in aerospace, transportation and energy sectors are in high demand for lightweight and high-performance composite materials. CANOE is thus developing precursor fibers based on renewable bio-sourced materials widely available in Europe, cellulose and lignin, to produce low-cost carbon fibers with medium performances for mass-production applications.


The ITA Group is an international research and training service provider for fiber-based high-performance materials, textile semi-finished products and their manufacturing processes with about 400 employees. A brief review of carbon fiber industry in Korea is discussed.

This presentation will describe recycling processes for CFRP and the properties of the recovered fibres. Composites and plastic materials have already demonstrated their effectiveness to reduce weight and bring new functionnalities in automotive industry. New applications for car body and new energy equipments like battery packaging or high pressure hydrogen tanks can be envisaged with sustainable, bio-based and recyclable composite materials.

Hyundai Motor Group has also been trying to develop various kinds of composite materials for exterior, interior, chassis, powertrain, and body parts. Polyprpylene (PP) and polyamide (PA) based short or long glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics are suitable for non-structural parts whereas uni-directional or woven fabric carbon fiber reinforced thermosets are useful to structural parts.

Haleema A. Alamri, is an R&D program leader at Saudi Aramco working on the development of innovative materials for sustainability in packaging materials, she also works as a research affiliate at MIT. Haleema hold a PhD in chemistry and polymer science from KAUST and she works with a range of organization in designing scientific projects and building competitive products that can both be commercially successful and at the forefront of science.

As one of the leading producers within the PVC compounds industry, Benvic develops for more than 50 yearscompositions tailored to the needs of our customers and with a focus on sustainable development.

CTCPA is an industrial technical center for French manufacturers of canned and dehydrated products. In the field of packaging, CTCPA aims to assist the food industries and the food-packaging manufacturers on their packaging material specifications, in the light of food constraints or «packaging failures».

Integration of sustainable energy generation technology in our living environment is one of the big challenges of the energy transition. This translates to an increasing demand for innovative PV module materials that enable aesthetically pleasing or invisible PV products. Many of the new applications require lighter and mechanically more robust PV elements, which creates excellent opportunities for the introduction of polymer-based materials.

NEOM is a bold and audacious dream. It is a vision of what a New Future might look like (in fact, NEOM means, “new future”). The impact of materials on the environment is an important element of industrial decarbonization strategies. The circular economy aims to improve resource efficiency and end plastic waste, but can also be a route to lower emissions. New recycling technologies and capacity will be needed to close the loop and create high quality recycled materials. But recycling alone isn’t enough. This talk discusses which markets are moving fastest on circular economy legislation, the effects on packaging choices and costs, how companies are responding in the recycling sector.

Plastics are an indispensable part of our daily lives, but their production, use and end-of-use disposal are beset with problems. Having played a pivotal role in successfully coordinating and managing polymer research activities for the past 20 years, DPI is ideally placed to initiate a dialogue on this subject. We have been active to formulate a shared vision on plastics, discuss the challenges and priorities experienced by the players in the value chain, and identify the options for taking action.


CIRC-PACK (Towards circular economy in the plastic packaging value chain) is a three-year EU-funded project that aims at developing a more sustainable, efficient, competitive, less fossil fuel dependent, integrated and interconnected plastic value chain. A breakthrough family of biobased polyesters, some of them compostable, will be developed by the project, having an instrumental role to play along plastic value chain.

The National Composites Centre is a world-class research centre, where companies of any size and across industry sectors, can access cutting-edge technology and specialist engineers, to drive innovation in the design and manufacture of composites.

Mole Solutions is currently developing cost-effective, safe and environmentally friendly underground freight pipelines for solid cargoes. The system is designed to integrate with existing supply chains and transfer some of the high volume of products that travel by road into capsules running in pipelines laid beside or under existing and planned transport infrastructure.

ITENE develops new packaging materials with properties improved by the use of biodegradable materials or the use of techniques such as nanotechnology. It designs solutions for identification, traceability and safety of goods. It incorporates the eco-design from the early stages of product development.

FRP – known as Fiber Reinforced Polymer is a corrosion free and sustainable alternative to steel reinforcement in concrete. Since 1970’s FRP reinforcement has been used in very specific applications. Nowadays FRP reinforcement is widely used in marine construction, soft-eye, bridges and bridge decks, foundation slabs.
