public-private partnerships inkeeping with Kenya’s constitution 2010

MESSAGE FROM THE KOGS NATIONAL CHAIRMAN

Dear ColleaguesIt is my singular and great pleasure to extend my warm invitation to you for the forthcoming 37th Annual Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting of Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society to be held in Eldoret from February 13th to 15th 2013. The theme of the conference is “Enhancing Quality SRH care through innovative processes, innova-tive financing, sustainability and public-c-private partnerships in keeping with Kenya’s Constitution 2010". Kenya has made some progress in women’s and newborns’ health care over the years. This progress, however, is far from what is needed to achieve optimal benefits. We are moving towards our national goals against a backdrop of major challenges of human resource for health, lead-ership and infrastructure and supplies in the health sector. We are less than five years away from the MDG touchline and there exist continu-ing and emerging challenges that need to be tackled for Kenya to achieve national goals as articulated in MDGs and Kenya’s Vision 2030. The 2013 conference comes at a critical time in Kenya’s history when the country is putting in place instruments, institutions and policies that will implement the new constitution. The Gen-eral Elections scheduled for March 4 2013 will be the climax of this process. We believe that implementation of the constitution must be guided by evidence-informed practices, a human rights approach, quality improvement, standard setting and audit, and application of appropriate and cost-effective technologies. Quality obstetrical and gynaecological practice must be based on best operational processes, research and be supported by modern ICT, products and equipment. The conference theme captures some of these challenges including poor quality of maternal and neonatal health care, declining reproductive

health indicators, declining reproductive health resources, regional and urban disparities in health care provision and access, and catering for a youthful population, the ‘youth bulge’. It is necessary for health care providers, policy makers and leaders to walk the unbeaten path of innovation in order to optimize impact. It is critical to address the root causes of high repro-ductive and child morbidity and mortality rates.

It is critical that we bring to you in Eldoret a balanced programme that puts together innova-tive processes and sustainable strategies in the practice of obstetrics and gynaecology with evidence-informed innovations in public health and primary health care in women’s and new-borns’ health. Public private partnership’s is an important element in this regard.

I cordially welcome to the conference fellow obstetricians and gynaecologists from all parts of Kenya and the East, Central and Southern African region, colleagues from Ministries of Health, partnership and funding organizations, pharmaceutical industry, sister professional associations particularly the Midwives Chapter of National Nurses Association of Kenya, Kenya Paediatric Association, KMA, KMWA, RHRA, policy makers, residents in training and medical students.

You will have tremendous opportunities, profes-sional and social to share and disseminate the latest research findings, best practices in service delivery, identify future research priorities and develop an accessible database for decision makers and policy makers in sexual and repro-ductive health. Eldoret has a warm weather in February.

Key speakers will include renowned personalities in sexual and reproductive health.We invite abstract submissions under the Con-ference Sub Theme topics and other clinical, epidemiological and policy related topics in
