Welcome to Peace Event Sarajevo 2014. In an age of conflicts and confrontations, 100 years after the start of World War I we want to appeal for a culture of peace and to stand up for peace, disarmament, civil conflict resolution and non-violence as well as social and ecological justice.

You are holding the Event Program in your hands. It is designed to give you an overview of all the activities with the relevant schedules, times and locations.

This large Peace Event has been organized from the grassroots with many hours of voluntary and selfless work – many, many thanks to everyone who has helped.

And please let us not forget that this city and this country have survived a merciless war, whose physical and psychological effects can still be felt today, and also a natural disaster, which destroyed large areas of the region.

PEACE EVENT SARAJEVO – STATEMENT

You will meet several thousands of people com-mitted to peace mainly from Europe and the region of Western Balkans, speaking out to-gether against war and violence 100 years after the beginning of World War I.

People all over the world want to live in peace – but the last century has seen wars and violence at all levels and in most parts of the world, inclu-ding the former Yugoslavia. We believe and want to show that the power of active nonviolence is the only sustainable way to transform a world of wars and violence into a culture of peace and nonviolence. Current events in Ukraine, Syria, Central Africa, and many other parts of the world, as well as the wars in Yugoslavia in the 1990s and the current social protests in Bosnia and Herzegovina, require our joint commitment and public statement that there are alternatives to war in the form of civil, nonviolent conflict trans-formation, as shown in many successful non-violent campaigns as well as in official docu-ments like the UNESCO declaration on a “Culture of Peace”. Our common goal remains the vision of Bertha von Suttner, Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and many more, namely: a world without war and violence. The more of us who participate and demonstrate this clearly at the Peace Event in Sarajevo, the stronger our signal for “another world possible” will be!

An international Forum

In Sarajevo there will be more than 100 workshops and round tables organized around five thematic issues: a culture of peace and nonviolence, gender, women and peace, peace and social justice, reconciliation and dealing with the past and militarism and alternatives. These workshops, offered by a big variety of local, regional, European and international organizations, will contribute to show the diversity of existing peace work and support a critical analysis and the drawing up of new alternatives. The importance of „dealing with the past and reconciliation” in the Western

Balkans and other war-torn societies, as well as lessons to be learned from the history of wars and violence 100 years after World War I, will be highlighted in discussions.

A Cultural event

We will also be present on the squares and streets of Sarajevo with cultural contributions. The Peace Event should be marked by a culture of peace represented in all its facets and made accessible to everyone. Peace is something that should be celebrated.

Join the Youth Camp of dialogue and cultural exchange!

From June 6 to 10, 2014, Sarajevo will also be a major meeting point of young people to stand up against war and for a peaceful, just and sustainable future. In our large-scale Sarajevo Youth Camp we will discuss our commitment against war, develop alternatives and present these to the public. This gathering will be a contribution to strength the Youth Peace movement in Europe. All of you are invited to come, participate and create.

The Peace Event Sarajevo 2014 is currently being prepared by an international, a national and a local coordinating committee. More than 100 groups from Bosnia and Herzegovina, cooperating in the Network for Building Peace / Mreža za izgradnju mira, are co-organizing the event. Peace activists from all former Yugoslavian countries are actively participating as well. The event happening in Sarajevo from June 6 to 9 is a symbol of peace, reconciliation and understanding as an alternative to war – an example of the “common house of Europe” seen from a grass-roots perspective. During these four days, we want to try to actively “live” peace.

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

It is with great concern and consternation that we have learned about the numerous victims and tremendous destructions due to the floodings in the Balkans and especially in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia.

We would like to express our deepest sympathy and sincere support to those, who suffer from the consequences of these worst floodings in over a century in the region.

Preparing the Peace Event, which will take place in Sarajevo from 6 to 9 of June, we turn to all organizations, initiatives and partners supporting this international Event: Please help with both monetary and material donations! GWP – Gender, Women and Peace A controversial debate about the UN Resolution 1325

BKC, Friday, June 6, 2-5 pm

Women around the world have celebrated UN Security Council Resolution 1325 of 2000 on Women, Peace and Security, welcoming it as a tool for peace, democracy and the prevention of war. In the years since its adoption the world has witnessed a massive increase in military spending, and more illegal and disastrous wars, with the ‘protection’ of women sometimes used as a pretext. Although European countries have implemented the UN 1325 resolution, the presence and participation of women in decision making structures are not increasing and in post conflict situations women are more victims than active part of building peace. We see NATO citing Resolution 1325 while, instead of peace-keeping, it fosters militarization, expands its machinery worldwide, and fights aggressive wars.

In the Round Table we want to discuss our demand for a peaceful, gender-just, non-violent society, in which women are visible in the public and integrated in decision making and societal responsibilities, a society with respect and dignity for all human beings independent of their religion, tradition, colors and origin.

MA – Militarism and Alternatives

The crisis in and around Ukraine shows the consequences of a politics of militarization for peace and international security, and for a Europe which is at long last a peaceful common home. In this workshop we want to discuss the alternatives to confrontation – from all sides.

Global military expenditure is around $1.7 billion, NATO is the strongest military alliance in history, and the world is full of wars and armed conflicts. Still today, all life on earth could be ended by the use of nuclear weapons. The EU has developed new military structures and becomes more and more like one leg of the NATO structure. New conflicts like those in East Asia dominate international politics while old ones like Middle East remain unsolved.

Given this context, we have to face the fundamental question: what are the alternatives to militarization? We propose a broad discussion on peaceful conflict prevention and resolution, cultures of peace, disarmament, the OSCE and UN structures and many new ideas for setting the world on a peaceful path.

CPN – A Culture of Peace and Nonviolence

Inspired by Gandhi and built through a lot of experiences, the Culture of Peace and Non-

Violence remains a challenging concept for our world.

Peace is more than the absence of war, it is living together with our differences – of sex, origin, language, religion or culture – while developing equality of rights, equal respect for each person, participative democracy and universal respect for justice and human rights on which such coexistence depends. Therefore, peace is never achieved. It is an on-going process. Nonviolence is the way towards this long-term goal. Rejecting violence in all its different forms, it requires awareness and active participation by all individuals and communities. It is an everyday life decision.

The participants in the Round Table will highlight this comprehensive approach to a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence in its different dimensions, but also add their personal experiences of nonviolent activism from their specific contexts.

In the world today basic needs are satisfied, public services are collapsing jobs are threatened or destroyed, large fraction of the population is marginalized, inequality of income and welfare increase.

These situations create tensions and conflicts, divisions between groups, races, nations. If social insecurity and fear is spreading there are

risks of violent conflicts, and even war... at the expense of human security: economic security, food security, health security, environmental security, personal security, community security, political security.

In the world today, one can witness the growth of social uprising and movements of resistance in a lot of countries. They are defending the living standards, demanding democracy and social justice, fighting corruption and inequalities, struggling for the peaceful reconstruction and development of society.

The roundtable will come back to the principles of human security, and study social movements, in particular in the Western Balkans

RDP – Reconciliation and dealing with the past - Is silence the price to pay for peace?

There are many different ways for a society to deal with its violent past. And there are many different ways to build peace and (re)construct broken ties within a society after a violent conflict. Current “transitional justice”-concepts emphasize the importance of openly facing the past for the rebuilding of a society which has gone through a violent conflict. In the same time, many individuals and societies prefer to avoid addressing the violent past because they estimate that this is a too sensitive issue and that silence is the price to pay for a pragmatic living together. Under which conditions can “dealing with the past” and “reconciliation” become complementary processes, and under

which conditions are they obstructing each other? How much memory and how much forgetting do we need in the (re)construction of societies which went through a violent conflict? Discussing examples from different countries, this round table will bring together practitioners in the field of dealing with the past from South Eastern Europe and other regions from Europe and the world.

PEACE ASSEMBLY – BKC, JUNE 9, 10-12 AM

Monday June 9, on the final day of the Peace Event, it will be time for the future with the Assembly of Convergence for Peace. The organizations, networks, movements, individuals, who have been thinking and working together during the Forum’s round tables and workshops and the Youth Camp can gather to jointly evaluate which common action or work they may propose or strengthen in order to build this other world of peace and justice we want.

In case there is a demand, this Assembly of Peace can be organized with several “meetings of convergence for action” before joining together. In such “meetings of convergence“, participants can join together to see how to carry on discussion on specific topics and themes as a result or an outcome of the activities during the Peace event, and/or to build international actions and campaigns. All kinds of action can be considered as working base for these convergences - something that should facilitate the articulation between different networks and movements.

The Peace Event does not deliberate as a body. There will be no final declaration or statement on behalf of all the participants. No-one, therefore, is authorized, to express positions claiming to be those of all its participants. Nonetheless, participants, organizations or groups of organizations that participate in the Peace event can deliberate on declarations or actions they may decide on, whether singly or in coordination with other participants. The Peace Event will circulate such decisions without directing, hierarchizing, censuring or restricting them, but as deliberations of the organizations or groups of organizations that made the decisions.

The participants who want to propose ideas, initiatives, actions, campaigns to be discussed at the Assembly of Convergence for Peace, or to propose a thematic Meeting of Convergence can do it during the first 3 days of the Peace Event.

The Women in War inaugural conference will take place in Sarajevo on June 7thand 8th, with the support of the University of Sarajevo’s Gender department and the Sarajevo Peace Event.

2014 marks the centennial of the start of World War One and a greater visibility of women in armed conflicts. Along with the numerous commemorative events and conferences that will be taking place, this centennial is a unique opportunity to assess the experience and consequences of war on women twenty years after the war in the ex-Yugoslav area (1991-1995), with a look into the past as well as at conflicts of the same period, namely Rwanda.

Human security training – Ujedinjenih naroda

As part of Sarajevo Peace Event 2014, a 5-day Summer School on “Humanizing Security” will be held throughout June 4-9 in Sarajevo, as a collaborative endeavor of civil society organizations from Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, United Kingdom and Turkey

The Summer School is organized by a network of organizations called “Citizens’ Network for Peace, Reconciliation and Human Security”. The event will serve as a meeting point for activists, practitioners and researchers, to discuss and elaborate upon human security – as a much debated discourse & concept – in its multiple dimensions, and, upon its strategic and practical/tactical utility in efforts to make the world a better place. The program covers issues as varied as youth precarity, small arms, private security, gated communities, state/national security, lack of- trust in public authorities and new urban protest movements.

We will explain how Aboriginal people see their territorial and environmental rights as well as their renewed links to non Aboriginal people. We will begin with an analysis of the struggle of the Algonquin of Eastern Ontario against mining exploration for uranium on their historic territories. In turn we will study the confrontation between the Police and a peaceful encampment, foreshadowing the development of the fracking industry in the province.

It was during the War which started in Sarajevo that conscientious objection (co) to military service was first recognized by States. In Sarajevo in 2004 a conference brought together co movements and governments to extend recognition in this region. Since then Conscription has now been abolished throughout the Western Balkans, but we will hear from objectors from nearby countries and discuss the continued relevance of conscientious objection as an anti-militarist strategy.

The Balkan area is severely traumatized, without psychological dealing with the past, it is difficult to move towards reconciliation.

The panel will compare the political and juridical international framework on chemical weapons with that of nuclear weapons.

A wave of social protests in Bosnia-Herzegovina started in February 2014. The demonstrations were initiated by workers, unemployed and young people in Tuzla canton. Reasons for discontent are manifold. Unemployment, poverty, criminal privatizations and corruption are structural problems in society. In this workshop activists and researchers from Bosnia-Herzegovina will discuss the situation and the perspectives for a New Left.

As an act of solidarity the Austrian branch of the Fellowship of Reconciliation organizes once a year a delegation to Colombia. The Photographs, which are shown in the exhibition, were taken by the young photographer Marie-Luise Schmidt during one of those Delegations in 2012. The pictures are portraits of community members and give some impressions of life in the Peace Community.

The American Let’s Create Peace artist Laurie Marshall will create together with thirty high school students a symbolic mural of a ‘Peace Tree’ on the earth in space. All participants of the Sarajevo Peace Event 2014 are invited to collage their vision, creativity and wisdom about peace on a leave or bird. Join the collaborative co-creating party and reflect on your desire to transform a culture of violence into a culture of peace. Together, we raise awareness for a message of peace and be part of the international ‘Singing Tree Forest’. Parts of the collaborative mural will be distributed at all major Peace Event Locations.

The workshop aims to evoke understanding of “the other” through storytelling, to trigger a sense of empathy. Stories have a point, they exert moral pressure. Stories are about what should be in order to shape thought and action to bring about change. Storytellers will try to invoke the past to comment on problems and needs in the present in order to affect the future. Storytelling is a significant means of socializing children across cultures; it can play an important role in peace education and empowering young people to be peacemakers themselves. There will be an interactive storytelling and story-playacting environment.

YOUTH CAMP & ACTIVITIES

Meet young people from the Balkans, Europe and all over the world!

The Youth Camp is a place where young activists and advocates for peace from the Balkans, Europe and all over the world come together, in order to meet likeminded people, to learn from each other and to build understanding, friendship and social networks. The principles of the camp are nonviolence, a culture of peace and human dignity, as well as values such as pluralism, democracy, nondiscrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and gender equality.

Youth camp participants are invited to take part in all the activities of the main event and there will be specific self organized youth camp activities, like diverse seminars, workshops, creative and cultural activities and sports! There will be a special emphasis on intercultural understanding and dialogue, reconciliation and dealing with the past, and peace and nonviolence education. Different approaches — with a focus on bringing together people from different countries — ranging from peer-to-peer education to nonviolent training, reconciliation seminars and expert dialogues are being pursued.

The Youth Camp with youth activities will take place from June 6-10 at Camp Oaza in Ildza. The youth activities address the participants of the youth camp, but any participant of the Peace Event is welcome to join in.

Tram #3 runs between tram station “Ilidža” and Sarajevo city center

Taxis are easily available at the tram station “Ilidža” and in the city. A ride from the camp to city center costs about 12 KM.

Activity will be presented in two parts – Poetry workshop and Recital. Poetry workshop will be an opportunity for people to learn how to write poetry, including those who have never attempted to do so before. It will also be an opportunity for people to use other art forms such as illustrations and paintings to capture the spirit of Ubuntu and the phrase “I Am Because You Are”. The artwork gathered will be used as a backdrop on the final activity, poetry recital.

Document Theatre as a tool for peace work in Iraq and elsewhere (action-oriented)

After introduction, the participants should write down a personal experience which had some emotional impact on them. After that, everybody (who wants) first reads it out loudly. Then we would do some exercises citing the texts. What is hoped to be reached is that the participants first notice how to 'play' and 'defend' their own emotional experience against others, but on the other hand begin to feel that they are not the only ones with these experiences.

The basic idea of this workshop is very simple: We all need to eat, so why not cook together, get to know each other and learn about foreign cuisine and interesting, unknown ingredients.The workshop will take on up to 20 participants, but even if you are not interested in joining the cooking, you can be a part of this by: 1) Bringing something edible (spices, sweets etc.) that is typical for your home country (or is just lying around at your place) and giving it to us. 2) Dropping by in the evening for food! – We aim to cook for more people than just the participants in the cooking part and hope to provide something edible for anyone who is interested in trying new things (or is hungry enough to eat anyway).

I’d like to give people the opportunity to try it out so they can see if they enjoy it and if it has a positive effect on them. Before the youth camp I will get in touch with fellow Sokka Gakkai International members (I belong to this lay organisation of Buddhists) from across Europe to see if they would like to support this workshop with me.

Peace and Security Game KULT

The game involves "mapping" the world into approximately 6 countries. Participants will take over leading roles for each country, with a maximum of 4 participants for each country. Each country group will get an index card with key data of their respective country, this can include economic data, population, military data, environmental activity, treaties with other countries etc. Participants will have to deal with different scenarios, which can include natural disasters, famines, violent conflict, border disputes etc.

In 2011 global military spending amounted to $1730 billion – despite the fact that 1 billion people suffer from hunger, even more do not have access to safe water or adequate health care and education, and even in the developed world millions are without work. The Millennium Development Goals cannot be realized while the world squanders its wealth on militarism. However, apparently unlimited financial resources seem to be available for military jets, tanks, ships, bombs, missiles, landmines and nuclear weapons. How to reverse this process is the challenge of today.

Internet and mobile phone: Every kiosk sells and recharges prepaid SIM cards. Internet can be easily activated by SMS or in the stores of the providers. Smartphone application “Sarajevo Peace Event 2014” is also available, see below for more information. Public Transportation: The main city bus-, tram- and trolley operator is the company GRAS. You can buy city bus/tram tickets at every kiosk in Sarajevo or directly from the driver. The first ride is at 05:00 and the last at 01:00 am The ticket price is 1.60 KM at any kiosk or 1.80 KM on the bus or tram. Daily tickets cost 5.40 KM and weekly tickets 12 KM. Tram tickets are valid for 1 hour. Available to buy are also 5 or 10 rides tickets.
