Norfolk Way 2016 Innovation Awards
After the enormous success of the inaugural awards last year, and with winners from across all the
Norfolk schools, I am thrilled and delighted to welcome all of you tonight.
For too long, I believe Norfolk has been regarded as a rural backwater, in education and in particular the all-important STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.
If we are going to unlock the full potential of Norfolk’s young people and equip them to success in the
increasingly competitive global economy, and to seize and benefit from the growing opportunities on their doorstep here in the Eastern Region, then we must do all we can to promote the spirit of innovation and enterprise in our area and encourage the next generation. I am delighted that through these awards supported by and in conjunction with some of the leading businesses and skill agencies in our area, we are celebrating the best and inspiring the rest by rewarding the best examples of science and innovation in schools and colleges.
Together, we will help build a network of Norfolk enterprise and innovation to help power the Norfolk Economy for the 21st Century.
George Freeman, MP for Mid Norfolk – Minister for Life Sciences

A Few Words from Wymondham High Academy
We are delighted to host
this year’s Norfolk Innovation Awards at Wymondham High Academy Trust. We have been great supporters of the innovation awards since their conception
by Mr George Freeman in 2015. The awards set out a philosophy of constructing a world class
modern and competitive local economy which aligns so closely with our own values. It is our belief that by being on the cutting edge of technology, our
students will position themselves to seize the very best opportunities for future success.
Norfolk’s young people are amazing and these awards acknowledge their great commitment to their studies and their many successes and achievements, as well as highlighting the potential of these fantastic young people across the county.
I would like to thank all of those who have supported the delivery of this great evening and a special thanks to our music and food technology
departments whose contributions you will enjoy as the evening continues.
May I wish you an enjoyable evening of celebration.
Mr R Boulton, Principal

Norfolk Way 2016 Innovation Awards
Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding services to Science, Technology and Innovation in Norfolk
Sir Paul Nurse, geneticist
Sir Paul Nurse was born in Norfolk, where his parents were from, and was raised in London where he attended Harrow County Grammar School.
Sir Paul said:
“I was never very good at exams, having a poor memory and finding the examination process rather artificial, and there never seemed to be enough time to follow up things that really inter-ested me. But there were good things about the school. I had an excellent Biology teacher, Keith Neal, who encouraged his pupils to study natural history and to do real experiments. As a geneticist and cell biologist, Sir Paul’s discoveries have helped to explain how the cell controls its cycle of growth and division. Working in fission yeast, he showed that the cdc2 gene encodes a protein kinase, which ensures the cell is ready to copy its DNA and divide. Paul’s findings have broader significance since errors in cell growth and division may lead to cancer and other serious diseases.”

Chief Executive and Director of the Francis Crick Institute

Connect Education and Business
Connect Education and Business links young people directly with employers through work related learning, work experience and STEM, Energy and Career Ambassadors. This enables young people understand the skill set demanded by employers and the different entry routes into a career.
For employers, we provide the platform for them to work directly with young people in a structured way to shape a future workforce and to address known skills gaps. Through contact with employers, young people gain a real understanding of the workplace and become more employment ready – also acquiring the softer employability skills of confidence, commercial acumen and resilience.
At present, we work with well over 3,000 employers across Suffolk and Norfolk. We have a foot print in all middle and secondary schools in Suffolk and a growing number in Norfolk. We support schools with work related learning and careers, information, advice and guidance.
We are the contract holder for the STEM Ambassador Programme in Suffolk and Norfolk with a network of around 900 STEM Ambassadors.
