Welcome to the 87th Hazel Grove Musical Festival of Music, Speech and Drama.
The year 2014 sees major changes to our committee, with the retirement of both our General Secretary,
Eileen Halsall, and our Vocal Secretary, Elaine Naylor. They leave us with our best wishes and thanks
for their sterling work over many years with our Festival.
In their place we are pleased to welcome mother and son team Kathleen and Matthew Penney, who
have taken up the position of Hon. General Secretary and Assistant respectively. We are equally
pleased to welcome Margot and Barclay Jackson, who are sharing the Hon. Vocal Secretary’s work.

COPYRIGHT and PHOTOCOPYING
1. The Music Publishers’ Association Code of Practice on Photocopying Copyright Works makes the following
concession for copying own choice pieces from volumes only for the use of the adjudicator at a festival,
provided that the entrant or participant has already purchased his/her own copy and that the copy made is
retained and destroyed by the Administrator of the festival immediately after the event.
2. The Hazel Grove Festival is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with the Authors’
Licensing and Collecting Society. This means that the entrants do not have to seek copyright permission for
any poetry, prose or solo dramatic items* performed, to a time limit of 10 minutes.
Performers and teachers will be delighted to know that their participation in the festival means that authors
will be directly reimbursed as a consequence of their work being performed at this festival.
Duologues and group dramatic activity are not covered by this agreement, and copyright for these items
should be sought by performers at the time of entry.
*Solo dramatic items must be announced with title and author at the time of performance to qualify for
copyright indemnity, and the performer must not change the words or gender of the character.
3. No video/audio recording or photography will be allowed during competitions.

90+ or OUTSTANDING An exceptional performance, both technically and artistically
87-89 or DISTINCTION An excellent performance technically and artistically
84-86 or COMMENDED A convincing performance technically and artistically
81-83 or MERIT A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation and/or technical ability
78-80 or MODERATE A performance showing development of technique and/or communication
75-77 or FAIR A performance limited in its communication

TROPHY AND MEDAL POLICY
All certificates, medals, trophies and plaques are awarded at the discretion of the adjudicator and the Festival Committee.
First, second, and third certificates will be awarded in all Music and Speech and Drama classes where sufficient merit is
shown.
In Junior classes a keepsake Medal will be awarded to winners in the younger age groups, an enhanced First Prize
Certificate will be awarded in the older age groups.
In Adult Classes an enhanced First Prize Certificate will be awarded to the winner of the class.
A Trophy/Shield may be awarded to certain Adult Championship classes featuring Pianoforte, Vocal and Choral
performances. Any such award will be for a period of up to a year and be returnable to the festival at the end of this period.
The winner will bear the cost of any engraving.

SPEECH & DRAMA ADJUDICATORS
PAUL BENCH MEd, LGSM, ALAM, PGCE, ACP(Lings),IBFP, MIFA, CertLangEd, LJBA, MSTSD,
MASC(Ph), FRSA
Paul Bench studied at London and Birmingham Universities and has worked for the London Academy of Music and
Dramatic Art as an examiner for many years. He has been head of Drama and Theatre in several large departments as well
as Director of Studies.
Paul has written many articles and book reviews for various journals and newspapers such as The Times Educational
Supplement and The Stage. He is presently reviews editor for the journal of the Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama.
As an adjudicator member of the International and British Federation of Festivals, he has adjudicated many festivals over
the years. He has worked for the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival on many occasions. He has also judged the finals of
the eight week festival in Sri Lanka.
He has taught voice and presentation skills at several UK university departments for MA and MSc programmes, where he
has been a visiting lecturer, and he is a member of the Society of Education Consultants.
In his capacity as an examiner with LAMDA he has worked with students throughout the United Kingdom and within
Europe, to Spain, Italy, Belgium and Holland. He has travelled internationally to Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and South
Africa, Australia, Japan, Sri Lanka, India, Singapore, the United States, the Middle East and China.
He has a private and corporate client base from a wide spectrum from the Law. Education, Business and the Performing
Arts. He is a member of the British Voice Association and a tutor for Voicecare Network, working with teachers and
lecturers to help with their vocal care and delivery in the classroom.
Paul is an International Bach Flower practitioner, advanced medical aromatherapist and Reiki therapist, specialising in
relaxation techniques. He regularly provides day courses in Voice Therapy, The Creative Self, Bach Flower Therapy and
Performance Psychology.
MARYROSE SWARBRICK
Currently Head of Drama at St Mary's Hall, Stonyhurst College, a prestigious boarding school, Maryrose has worked
extensively in theatre from a very young age, in everything from pantomime to Shakespeare. Musical Theatre, though,
remains her first love, and with the help of her daughters she runs her own long-established School of Performing Arts and
Theatre Company. As a director and choreographer, she loves nothing more than to encourage the young (and not so
young) in all aspects of dance and drama.
MUSIC ADJUDICATORS
TIMOTHY BARRATT GRSM, LRAM, ARCM, LMusTCL, ARAM
Timothy Barratt studied on a Scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, winning many major awards, and completed his
studies with Vlado Perlemuter in Paris and Geoffrey Parsons. He has toured and broadcast extensively in the UK and
abroad as soloist, accompanist and chamber music player. Whilst still a student he developed a special interest in song
accompaniment through playing for Masterclasses at Aldeburgh, subsequently partnering such artists as Dame Felicity Lott
and Robert White. In addition, instrumentalists he has worked with include Jack Brymer, Bradley Creswick and Haaken
Hardenberger.
Teaching forms a major part of his musical life and he enjoys working with pupils of all ages and levels. Having worked
as a Coach and Lecturer at the RAM, TCM and Morley College for many years he is now Head of Keyboard at Dulwich
College. He frequently directs Masterclasses for performers and teachers’ workshops in the UK and Far East and is a busy
Competition and Festival adjudicator.
An ABRSM examiner since 1991, he is also a Trainer amd Consultant Moderator. Other work for the AB includes co-
writing the Board’s Teaching Notes on Piano Exam pieces, selecting the graded Piano pieces, presenting Seminars and
acting as a mentor on the CT ABRSM Course.

DANIEL HOWARD BMus (Hons), DipRam, LRAM, LTCL, LGSM
Daniel Howard studied piano and singing at the Royal Academy of Music and graduated with a first class honours degree
and diploma of advanced studies.
As a pianist he was in much demand, playing many concertos and recitals up and down the country; however, it is as an
opera singer that he has made his career, singing many main roles throughout the UK and Europe. Most recently he
performed the role of Governor Albert Frank in Die Fledermaus at the Royal Albert Hall in a special gala performance
with Kiri te Kanawa and Jose Carreras. Other roles of note have included Papageno, Guglielmo, Tarquinius and Belcore
which he has sung for Companies such as English Touring Opera, Latvian State Opera, Hermitage Theatre, St Petersburg
and Diva Opera.
Currently he is singing the Marchese in La Traviata at the Azuriales Opera Festival in Nice. In demand as an oratorio
singer, he has sung most of the standard repertoire throughout the UK.
DAVID OLIVER ARAM, ARCM, LRAM
David Oliver has enjoyed a long career as pianist, teacher, adjudicator and ABRSM examiner. As a student, he won many
prizes at the Royal Academy of Music, including the award of the Recital Diploma. His concert performing in both solo
and ensemble has taken him to venues in the U.K., Europe and South East Asia, where he also recorded recitals for radio
and television. He has had extensive adjudicating and examining experience, both at home and abroad, including four visits
to the Hong Kong Schools’ Music Festival, most recently for a 5 week, 52 session visit in February and March 2013! He
has a flourishing private teaching practice and has had appointments to, among others, Harrow School, the Watford School
of Music and – currently – the North London Collegiate School. He was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy of
Music in 1968.
STEVEN ROBERTS MEd, BA(Hons), Cert Ed, BBCM, CMS
Steven Roberts has combined a career in education with his work as a conductor, musical director and adjudicator, working
both in this country and in Europe and as far afield as Peru and Bahrain.
His work in education has included training musicians and actors and he has worked extensively with partner schools as
part of his past educational responsibilities.
Despite a very busy educational career Steven has conducted numerous groups, including the Liverpool Welsh Choral
Union, The Huddersfield Choral Society, Dodworth and Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choirs and a variety of orchestras,
brass bands and wind ensembles, as well as being Chorus Master for concerts with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Jose
Carreras. He is currently Musical Director and Conductor with Altrincham Choral Society, Chesterfield Philharmonic
Choir and Honley Male Voice Choir. Steven has also worked as musical director for a number of theatrical productions,
and this diversity reflects his music and drama training.
Steven is also Musical Director with Sing Live UK which has seen him conduct in some of the country’s most prestigious
concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall, London, and in the College Gardens of Westminster Abbey for The Lady
Taverners and at Mass in St Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City, St Mark’s Basilica in Venice and in Assisi and most recently in
Vienna, Salzburg, Amalfi, Milan and Paris. Steven has conducted numerous concerts throughout this country but also in
Germany, France, Italy and the Czech Republic and with a variety of choirs, ensembles and orchestras, winds bands and
brass bands. He studied piano, brass and voice and has worked in a variety of musical settings.
Steven is an adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals, as well as sitting on the Board of
Trustees. He also acts as a Music Mentor for Music for Youth and is a member of the Association of British Choral
Directors.
Steven is a member of The Lord’s Taverners, the cricketing charity that raises money to give ‘young people, particularly
with special needs, a sporting chance’.

Lynne Rogers originally studied Theology at Manchester University before travelling to Italy to study singing under
Maestro Arrigo Pola, who famously taught Pavarotti. She then studied at Birmingham Conservatoire where she gained a
Masters in Performance Studies.
Currently Lynne has a busy career as a singing teacher, choral director and freelance soprano. She is a gifted concert and
oratorio performer and is a regular member of the BBC Daily Service Singers who broadcast on Radio 4. She particularly
enjoys 20th Century English Song repertoire and has sung in France, Holland, Italy and throughout the UK.
Lynne currently teaches singing at Liverpool Hope University and St. Edward’s College, the choir school to Liverpool
Metropolitan Cathedral. She is also studying for a PhD in the vocal health of teenage girl singers.
LUAN SHAW MA, PGDip, BA(Hons), ABSM(P), ABSM(T), HonBC
Luan Shaw has worked as an adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals for twelve years. She is
also a busy performer, teacher, workshop leader, examiner, lecturer - and parent!
Luan studied clarinet with Janet Hilton at Birmingham Conservatoire during the early 1990s, and later completed a Masters
Degree in ‘Psychology for Musicians’ at the University of Sheffield. She went on to build a rich and varied ‘portfolio’
career and in 2001, was awarded an honorary degree from Birmingham Conservatoire ‘in recognition of distinguished work
within the field of music’.
Currently co-principal clarinet with Orchestra of the Swan, Luan also performs regularly with the CBSO and Longborough
Festival Opera. As a chamber musician she has performed over 100 works for wind ensemble, and many more in mixed
combinations of voice, strings and piano. In addition to teaching primary class music, training two children’s choirs and
giving woodwind lessons in her local community, she runs Live Music Workshops for children with special educational
needs, Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stages 1 & 2 throughout the West Midlands. Over the past 20 years her
teaching posts have included Co-ordinator of Woodwind and Brass at Birmingham Conservatoire Junior School and Head
of Instrumental Studies at Hallfield School, Birmingham. Many of Luan’s former clarinet students have gone on to become
professional musicians.
Luan is an ABRSM Diploma examiner and has worked as a teaching mentor for ABRSM’s Professional Development
panel and as an ‘A’ level music moderator for AQA. During 2010/2011, Luan was actively involved in the design and
implementation of the unique ‘MMus Performance and Pedagogy’ course at Birmingham Conservatoire, where she is now
Lecturer in Pedagogy and Course Director of the Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Music (Professional Performance).
ELIZABETH STAFFORD BA(Hons), PhD, PGDip, LTCL, PGCE
Elizabeth Stafford was born and educated in Birmingham. She studied for a BA(Hons) in music at Durham University,
following this with a PhD in Performance Studies at Sheffield University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Vocal Studies at
Trinity College of Music and a PGCE in Primary Music at Birmingham City University.
As a solo soprano Elizabeth has won many competitions and awards, including First Prize and ‘Most Promising Young
Female Singer’ in the David Clover Competition and finalist representing Sheffield University in the Musica Britannica
Competition. She has appeared as an oratorio and opera soloist with numerous ensembles in venues including Symphony
Hall, Birmingham Town Hall and most of the major cathedrals in England. She has given recitals in many prestigious
locations including the CBSO Centre, the National Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Malta Cultural Centre,
and has broadcast as a soloist on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service. In 2011, Elizabeth gave a performance of
Rossini’s ‘Cat Duet’ in the presence of Princess Michael of Kent.
As a choral conductor, Elizabeth has conducted numerous youth and adult choirs in venues including Symphony Hall,
Birmingham Town Hall, Tewkesbury Abbey and St Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham. In 2009, Elizabeth was selected for a
choral conducting Masterclass with David Hill and the BBC Singers, and in 2010 was invited to conduct a massed choir for
the Music for Youth Family Prom in Birmingham.
Elizabeth has worked for numerous Local Authority Music Services as a vocal and curriculum teacher, and as a teacher-
trainer for Trinity College London, The Open University and the ABRSM. Elizabeth now runs her own company, Music
Education Solutions, which provides workshops and training for schools and teachers throughout the UK. She is currently
providing Music Education consultancy services to Trinity College London, Target Education Alliance, and THSH
(Symphony Hall) and is Singing Strategy Manager for Staffordshire Stoke Music Education Partnership. She is an
Adjudicator Member of the British and International Federation of Festivals.
