The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) African Member States and Participating Organizations recognize the need to improve and coordinate

observation systems across the nine GEO Soci-etal Benefit Areas by strengthening advocacy of open data-sharing policies and practices, as well as for the increased use of EO data and information. Similarly, focusing significant effort on building both human and technological capabilities will ensure that all parts of the Afri-can continent can benefit from better access to, and understanding and use of, EO data, information and services. A strategic goal of AfriGEOSS is to link existing EO capabilities and initiatives across Africa with current and emerg-ing Geo initiatives to enhance the continent’s capacity to produce, manage and use EO data and information. The AfriGEOSS initiative is providing the necessary framework for coun-tries and organisations to access and leverage on-going bilateral and multilateral EO initiatives across Africa, thereby creating synergies and minimising duplication for the benefit of the entire continent.
