Dr Raoul Goldberg’s book, available in South Africa at the end of May 2012, explores the overall health consequences of addictive behaviour in children and young people, as well as its underlying causes. Drawing on psycho spiritual insights, the author sees the child holistically as body, soul and spirit on a developmental journey from newborn to adult. He examines specific addictions through case histories taken from his clinical practice, and offers a tried and tested method to understand and manage each individual child or young person who succumbs to such dependencies. This book will be of value to parents, teachers and health professionals who work with children and adolescents; to young people and adults caught up in unhealthy addictive behaviour; and to all those who wish to understand better their own human nature.

Weaving Success: Voices of Change in African Higher Education by Cape Town-based author Megan Lindow The book, published by the Institute for International Education in New York in November 2011, creatively documents the 10-year history of the Partnership for Higher Education in Africa, a $440 million investment and collaboration by seven major U.S. foundations, including the Carnegie Corporation, Ford Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation, to strengthen and support universities in nine African countries. While Weaving Success would obviously have little appeal for a mass audience, it does offer rich and relevant perspectives on a number of themes, including open learning, philanthropy, African development, research and scholarship, higher education, or e-book publishing. After long years of neglect, African higher education is now finally on the march, recognized as a key cornerstone for building robust societies and sustainable economies on the African continent and throughout the developing world. The stories in the book span from the rainforest of Madagascar to the virtual classroom, and deal with topics ranging from innovative uses of technology in education, to the broader challenges of national development. Above all, it is a book of human stories, including that of a Ugandan inventor whose countless innovations have improved the lives of school girls, farmers, refugees and rural health practitioners; and the story of a young woman who escaped the shackles of rural poverty and gender inequality to become a lawyer -- to name but a couple.
