Welcome Message
On behalf of the Organising Committee, we are pleased to welcome you to Hong Kong to
participate in the Ninth International Conference on Advances in Steel Structures (ICASS
2018). This international conference series was initiated in 1996 by colleagues including
the Chairman of ICASS 2018 from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Few years
later, this conference series fosters a long-term partnership with the Hong Kong Institute of
Steel Construction.
The first, second, third and sixth of this conferences series were held in Hong Kong and
subsequently it was held in Shanghai (fourth), Singapore (fifth), Nanjing (seventh) and in
Portugal (eighth). After the eight previous successful conferences, this home-coming
conference is intended to provide a forum for researchers and professionals to discuss and
disseminate recent advances in analysis, behaviour, design and construction of steel,
aluminium and composite steel-concrete structures.
Therefore, we would sincerely invite you to be an active participant in this conference, as
one of its main goals is to exchange ideas and stimulate new research directions. We would
also sincerely hope that you can foster a long-term friendship with other participants.
Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the sponsors and members of the
committees and, above all, to the authors and participants. We wish you an enjoyable stay
in Hong Kong!

General Tourist Information
Getting to Hong Kong by Air
Hong Kong is a key aviation hub serviced by
more than 100 airlines that provide connections
to major cities throughout the world. Your
gateway to the city is the 24-hour Hong Kong
International Airport, which is consistently
ranked among the best airports in the world. If
you arrive in the city by plane, from the airport
you’ll have direct access to train, bus, taxi and
hotel transport to get you to and around town
Getting to Hong Kong by Ferry
Hong Kong is linked to a number of ports in
Mainland China by high-speed ferries servicing
Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and Hong Kong
International Airport (off Lantau Island).
Getting to Hong Kong by Train
It’s possible to visit Hong Kong from cities in
Mainland China by both high speed trains and
regular intercity train services.
Moving around
Taxi:
With the exception of some very remote areas,
taxis are plentiful throughout Hong Kong. They
can usually be hailed on the street (except in
restricted areas) or summoned by phone. All are
metered, relatively cheap, air-conditioned and
clean. Taxis are usually easily hailed along the
street, although they can’t pick up or drop off
passengers in certain restricted zones. It’s often a
good choice to opt for either a taxi queue at a
hotel or a taxi stand.
MTR:
Getting around Hong Kong to enjoy its world-
class attractions couldn't be easier with the quick
and efficient Mass Transit Railway (MTR)
system. This covers all major districts in the
territory, including stops at the boundary with
Mainland China (Lo Wu Station and Lok Ma
Chau Station).
Bus:
Buses in Hong Kong are plentiful and
comfortable, and most are air-conditioned.
Especially popular are the double-deckers that
offer great views of the surrounding city from
the top deck.
Minibus:
Minibuses are small buses that carry up to 19
people. Green minibuses operate along specific
routes at fixed prices. Exact change is required if
paying by cash and they all accept Octopus
cards. Red minibuses operate along routes that
are not always fixed and passengers can get on
and off anywhere along the route, except where
special prohibitions apply. You pay as you alight
when travelling on a red minibus and the driver
can usually provide change for small notes.

Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction (HKISC)was established in November 2000. It is a non-profit making organisation with its board membersfrom universities, consultants, contractorslaboratories, etc. in Hong Kong. HKISC serves thesteel construction industry in Hong Kong and theregion and carries the following specific missions.

NINTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCES IN STEEL STRUCTURES (ICASS
2018) was held in Hong Kong, China, from 5 to 7 December, 2018. The international conference series on
Advances in Steel Structures was initiated in 1996 under the auspices of the Hong Kong Polytechnic
University, which remained very active in fostering its continuation − joined a few years later by the Hong
Kong Institute of Steel Construction. As with the eight previous successful conferences, this conference is
intended to provide a forum for researchers and professionals to discuss and disseminate recent advances in
analysis, behaviour, design and construction of steel, aluminium and composite steel-concrete structures.
