Theatrix open air performances at St Albans School are well established. We performed A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2004, Peter Pan in 2005, The Beaux Stratagem in 2006, Much Ado About Nothing in 2007 and Cyrano de Bergerac in 2008.

In 2009 Theatrix promises that its ambitious new adaptation of Alice will delight audiences of all ages. So weirdly, scarily funny and goose-pimply that children from 3 to 93 will hug themselves with delight. An ensemble product- ion, with 21 Theatrix actors aged from 10 to 23 playing 100 roles, it is so fast and (gently) furious that, like Alice, you won’t quite know what to expect next.

“Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank and of having nothing to do … when suddenly a White Rabbit with

pink eyes ran close by her.”

Lewis Carroll – Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

And off Alice went on her adventures; and what adventures she had! Down the rabbit hole, becoming bigger (and smaller). A Cater-pillar with an attitude problem (what was he on, one wonders?). Tea with the (very) Mad Hatter. Lunch with the Walrus and the Car-penter (oysters are yummy, but an acquired taste, particularly if you have been introduced). Crazy Croquet with the psychopathic Queen

of Hearts. An encounter with Tweedledum and Tweedledee (a rather strange pair). A White Rabbit with time management problems. And that Cheshire Cat, what was he like! By the way, who did steal the tarts?

This new adaptation of Alice has been created by Theatrix in conjunction with young local writer Katie McCullough. Graduating in Script-writing for Film and Tele-vision, Katie has been involved with the Royal Court’s Young Writers’ Programme becoming a

graduate of their Introductory Group and the Invitation Only Group. Readings of her work have formed part of the ICA Lab and Theatre Royal, Stratford East in conjunction with The Group. She reached the semi-finals of the British Short Screenplay Competiton and the top 300 scripts for the Bruntswood Playwriting Competition. She was also selected to be one of the creatives on the Tony Wilson Experi-ence in Manchester. She has been tutored by Leo Butler, Polly Clark and in November will join Simon Stephens in an intensive one-on-one course funded by an Arvon Foundation Grant.
