Season Highlights: The 2019 field hockey campaign for the Warr iors star ted off in typical fashion. The team captured its second consecutive Cayuga County title in defeating archrival Port Byron which brought its championship total to 8 out of the 13 years that the tournament has been held. Thereafter, the squad defeated local field hockey powerhouses – Cazenovia at home and Liverpool on their home turf – along with most of their other opponents as they were able to seize their second consecutive league championship. The squad fell short of securing a Sectional title but one can assume that such will serve as motivation for their 2020 season.

Marvin Spence
Marvin K. Spence 2020 WCS Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
Marvin Spence, class of 1984, was the epitome of a multi-sport player. In representing Weedsport on the field, court, and track he did more than just participate, he excelled. As a three-sport athlete in the early 80’s Marvin was an exceptional athlete who was locally renowned especially in the sports of track and field and football.
On the gridiron, “Marvelous” Marvin was a fearless running back as well as a ferocious defensive player. Marvin amassed over 4,000 rushing yards during his high school football career. Marvin was a four-time All-League selection and garnered multiple All-State selections. He helped lead the Weedsport teams to three consecutive League Championships from 1981 – 1983, serving as the team captain of those teams in his Junior and Senior years, as well as a Sectional Title in 1981.
Marvin was also a versatile athlete in track and field, having success in the triple jump, long jump, sprints, and multiple relay events. He helped lead his team to League Championships in 1983 and 1984 as well as Sectional Championships in 1983 and 1984. The 1983 title was the first track and field Sectional Championship in school history.
At Hudson Valley Community College, Marvin continued to perform at a high level on the football field. He was named first team All-Conference as a defensive back as a freshman. Following his freshman campaign, he received multiple Division I offers to continue to attend school and play football. Marvin was set to play at Georgia Tech, but then had a change of heart and decided to enlist in the United States Army.
Marvin was known as the ultimate sportsman despite possessing an intense competitive drive. He was beloved by all of his teammates and is one of the most versatile athletes ever to have participated in athletics at Weedsport. His overall achievements and character confirm his enshrinement as a member of the Weedsport Sports Hall of Fame.
Matthew Lipiska 2020 WCS Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
Matthew Lipiska, class of 1999, was a standout on the basketball court during his high school career at Weedsport. Matt earned numerous accolades between 1995 and 1999 and earned 4 varsity letters as the starting point guard for the Boys’ Basketball team. He continued to play at the collegiate level at Roberts Wesleyan College, where he lettered in each of the 4 seasons he played. Upon induction, Matt was the second leading scorer in the Weedsport Boys’ Basketball history with 1,585 points. Matt was a dynamic point guard who scored in variety of ways and had great court vision to accommodate his excellent passing and dribbling skills. When inducted, Matt held the school record for total assists in a career with 553, total assists in a season with 145, and most assists in one game with 16. Matt’s basketball prowess was deservedly recognized during his playing tenure. He was a three-time OHSL All-Star, the Cayuga County Holiday Tournament MVP in 1996 while also being named to the All-Tournament team in other years, an All-State Team Selection in 1999, and he was named the Weedsport team MVP four times during his high school career. As a statistical reflection of the skill level at which Matt played, it is worth highlighting that for Matt’s senior year he averaged 26 points, 10 assists, and 5 steals per game which included a single game scoring high of 40 points. In recognition of his stellar senior campaign, Matt was the first Weedsport Boys’ Basketball player to be named to the All-CNY team in 1999. Additionally, Matt’s success on the hardwood earned him the opportunity to play against the top players in the state of New York as he was selected to play on the Central Region Scholastic Boys’ Basketball Empire State team in 1998 and participated in the New York State Fair All Star Games in 1998. At Roberts Wesleyan College, Matt was able to quickly adapt to the college game and as he started at point guard 3 consecutive seasons. Matt’s greatest accomplishment in college was being the starting point guard on a team that set a program record by winning 21 games, won the Northeast Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship, and earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament in 2001. During that season, Matt was a NAC first team selection, a National Christian College Athletic Association all region selection, the conference and team leader in assists, and set the single game assist record with 18. At the end of his college career he was positioned as the player with the second most assists in the college’s history with 575 and capped off his career with a total of 666 points scored. Matt’s career accomplishments at the high school and collegiate level puts him among the greatest basketball players in Weedsport history. His overall achievements embody what an individual must achieve to become a member of the Weedsport Sports Hall of Fame.
