3 PURPOSE

These Program Regulations set out the approved requirements for the Master of Counselling.

4 OVERVIEW

4.1 Campus Availability The Master of Counselling has been approved for delivery on the Fremantle and Sydney campuses.

4.2 Student Availability The Master of Counselling is available for enrolment to domestic Students and international Students with a student visa.

4.3 Australian Qualifications Framework The Master of Counselling is accredited by the University as a Level 9 AQF qualification.

4.4 Duration (i) The Volume of Learning for the Master of Counselling is two (2) years of equivalent full-time study.

(ii) The duration of this Program may be reduced if students enter with a Bachelor degree in Counselling or a cognate discipline area, providing all program learning outcomes and content and training requirements for accreditation are met.

Accordingly:

a. students who have previously completed a Bachelor of Counselling at Notre Dame will be awarded 100 units of credit in the Master of Counselling, and will be exempted from the following courses:

COUN6001 Counselling Skills COUN6002 Theoretical Approaches to Counselling COUN6005 Family Systems and Couples; and COUN6009 Trauma, Loss and Grief Counselling.

b. students who have completed a Bachelor of Behavioural Science at Notre Dame will be awarded 75 units of credit in the Master of Counselling, and will be exempted from the following courses:

COUN6008 Professional Practice; ARTS5010 Research Methods; and one 25 units of credit research elective.

Additionally, students of the Bachelor of Behavioural Science who have completed the course BESC3020 Community Mental Health will be awarded an additional 25 units of credit and exempted from COUNS6003 Approaches to Mental Health.

c. students who enter the Master of Counselling with any other related Bachelor degree may seek up to 100 units of credit, providing they can demonstrate that all accreditation requirements and program learning outcomes of the Master of Counselling may be met when combined with their prior learning.

(ii) An option to complete this Program part-time is available.

4.5 Accelerated Pathway: Vertical Double Degrees This Program is available in a vertical double degree combination with the following Programs: i. Bachelor of Behavioural Science; and ii. Bachelor of Counselling. Students may complete up to four compulsory courses from this Program in the Bachelor of Behavioural Science or the Bachelor of Counselling, for which they will receive specific credit in this Program. approved vertical double degree pathways at Appendix B and C, as well as the Program regulations of the Bachelor of Behavioural Science and the Bachelor of Counselling.

4.6 Maximum Duration The maximum period of time within which a student is permitted to complete the Master of Counselling Award is six (6) years (including any periods of approved leave of absence) from the date on which they were first enrolled into the program by the University. .

4.7 Study Mode The Master of Counselling is offered in Internal Study mode.

4.8 Professional Accreditation The Master of Counselling is accredited by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).

5 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

5.1 University Admission Requirements To be eligible for admission to The University of Notre Dame Australia, all applicants must meet the University’s minimum requirements for admission. The requirements for admission are detailed in the University’s Policy: Admissions.

5.2 Specific Program Requirements for Admission To be eligible for admission to the Master of Counselling applicants must also meet the following specific requirements. 5.2.1 Admission into the Master of Counselling requires a selection interview with a member of the

Counselling staff. At the interview the applicant will be required to demonstrate a suitable degree of mature life experience as defined by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), which is the competent authority that provides accreditation for this course.

5.2.2 Successful applicants are required to provide a National Police Certificate to the Dean (or delegate) before their enrolment can be finalised.

6 PRACTICUM OR INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to complete COUN6006 Placement, Supervision and Case Studies A and COUN6007 Placement, Supervision and Case Studies B. The length of the placement is normally 200 hours, which includes at least 40 hours of client contact and 10 hours of individual, clinical supervision. Details about placements will be provided by the Practicum Coordinator.

7 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

7.1 Program Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the Master of Counselling graduates will be able to: 1. Demonstrate advanced and integrated knowledge of a range of theoretical approaches to Counselling 2. Demonstrate a commitment to professional and personal development through training, supervision

and counselling 3. Demonstrate appropriate research methods to investigate an area of Counselling 4. Demonstrate advanced counselling skills, including assessing presenting issues, explaining aetiology, developing therapeutic alliances and implementing appropriate interventions 5. Demonstrate advanced skills in counselling practice in a variety of settings with individuals, couples

and groups 6. Present research findings through a written dissertation and oral presentations 7. Demonstrate advanced interpersonal communication skills, both orally and in writing 8. Work independently and, where appropriate, in collaboration with others 9. Apply professional and ethical standards to clients and colleagues and provide responsive culturally,

linguistically and socially diverse counselling strategies 10.Plan and conduct an original investigation to contribute to the general body of Counselling knowledge

7.2 Required Courses

To be eligible for the award of Master of Counselling students must complete a minimum of 400 Units of Credit, which include the following required and elective Courses:

25 Units of Credit from one (1) Core Curriculum Course

300 Units of Credit from twelve (12) compulsory Counselling Courses

75 Units of Credit from three (3) Elective Courses at least two (2) of which must be Research electives.

7.3 Elective Courses Students enrolled in the Master of Counselling are required to complete three (3) elective Courses.

Elective courses can be selected from the approved list of course offerings listed in Appendix D and E. 7.4 Course substitutions

Course substitutions, where permitted, must be approved by the Dean
