Capital IV – Design Guidelines

The Proposed 2010 Educational Specifications provide descriptions of typical programmed spaces for each of the three main types of schools: Elementary,

Middle, and High.

Previous FCS Educational Specifications developed in 1997 include General Requirements. The Proposed 2010 Design Requirements expand on these. Most requirements are based on standards which have already been incorporated into the prototypical schools in order to maintain “Cost Neutrality”. Proposed revisions

shown below are the exceptions which will impact construction cost beyond current prototypical schools.

Div. 8 –Doors & Windows

This is a value engineering recommendation in order to provide specific instructions to future architects, to reduce construction costs and enhance maintainability.

Classroom window requirements at general instruction classrooms are similar to the previous Ed Specs. However, excessively large windows and windows with decorative applied mullions are specifically prohibited.

High SchoolMiddle SchoolElementary School

Theatrical/ Stage Equipment requirements are more specific than previous Ed Specs. Requires Architect to employ a qualified Stage Equipment Designer and incorporate equipment appropriate for each program into the construction contract, including, theatrical light fixtures.

To provide the appropriate design expertise for equipment required and to avoid installation coordination problems through having equipment provided and installed by the building contract.
