recent trends in clinical chemistry for optimal patients carea hormone is a chemical substance produced in the body by an organ, cells of an organ, or scattered cells, having a specific regulatory effect on the activity of organs. for optimal patient care, accurate and specific measurement of hormones such as vitamin D, thyroid hormones, and testosterone is important. these hormones are measured by a variety of analytical techniques, including bioassay, immunoassay, and mass spectrometry interfaced with liquid chromatography. in this section, we will provide useful information about the analytical details for individual hormones using such techniques and clinical implications of these hormones assays.

review on potential biotin interference in immunoassaysoverviewBeing available as a “beauty” supplement, biotin has been demonstrated to impact assays that use biotin–streptavidin binding. With biotin use being so pervasive, it is critical that laboratorians and clinicians are aware of biotin interference so that misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment can be prevented.

expected outcomes1. Know the mechanism of biotin interference in immunoassays utilized with biotin–streptavidin binding.2. recognize immunoassays that are susceptible to biotin interference.3. Plan for preventive actions for biotin interference in clinical laboratories.

eDuCAtiOn WORKSHOP 02

atellica solution workflow - Doing more with lessoverviewDr. antonio Buño Soto (mD, PhD, currently the Head of Department at the clinical Pathology Service in Hospital Universitario La Paz at madrid, Spain) will share the experience using the atellica Solution from Siemens Healthineers. His team participated in an early adopter’s program study together with five other sites around europe. in the workflow study, he wanted to outline some of the features that the system can provide. for that purpose the team measured turnaround times, throughput of both analyzers and stat capabilities. results of these studies will be presented in the symposium.

expected outcomesthe existing healthcare scenario of increasing costs and reimbursement pressures combined with the need to reduce expenditure, all challenged by a continuing increase in workload explains why laboratories today must face an increasing pressure to automate their processes. the expected outcome from regarding study will be the use of systems that allows the integration of different laboratory disciplines, permit a decrease in turn-around-times while maintaining the requisite quality of results and requires fewer personnel also, thereby lowering costs.

clinical utility of prostate health index (phi ) for prostate cancer detection and prediction of high risk prostate canceroverview• Beckman Coulter prostate health index (PHI) is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved test that combines total PSa (tPSa), fPSa and p2PSa.• Several studies demonstrated that PHI significantly improves the predictive accuracy for detection of Pca, and associated with Pca aggressiveness compared to either tPSa or free-to- total PSa ratio (%fPSa) and the implementation of %p2PSa and PHi in clinical practice has the potential to significantly lower the rate of unnecessary prostate biopsies. • Active Surveillance (AS) has emerged as a standard management option for men with very low- risk and low-risk Pca and further studies are required to define that PHi could be incorporated into the follow-up schedule in aS patients.

illumina’s amplicon-based Brca1/Brca2 analysis: Faster and more reliableoverviewanalysis of Brca1 and Brca2 genes for pathogenic mutations is essential for the susceptibility screening and even companion diagnostics of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. traditional analysis based on Pcr and Sanger sequencing has limitations in terms of cost and tat. thus, many clinical laboratories have already turned to ngS solutions regarding Brca1 and Brca2 analysis, which will enable more affordable genetic screening with shorter tat. in this workshop, brief technological introduction for ngS technologies and representative illumina platforms will be provided and analytical performance of amplicon-based ngS assay for Brca1 and Brca2 will be discussed with actual data derived from a clinical practice setting.

expected outcomesthis workshop will provide a basic understanding of ngS technologies and platforms required for comprehensive Brca1 and Brca2 analysis. Participants are expected to obtain a perspective about the overall trend of ngS applications in clinical practice, in particular the analysis of Brca1 and Brca2 genes.
