A bro- chure available at the Court House lists the approved trees. A several-year project in the Argonne Forest section of Vet’s Park is reaching its conclusion with the completion of the signage naming of the varieties of trees in the Forrest, and the building of a beautiful entrance gazebo, with its historical and informative plaques and statue. Historically, the story of the Great Bend soldiers who during World War I fought in the Battle in the Argonne Forest in France at the end of the war and where so many gave their lives, gives understanding to why the name Argonne is so prominently used in Great Bend and why that name designates the forest section of the park. However an ongoing project for the Argonne Forest is to refresh, re- furbish, regenerate, and replant, and fertilize the forest’s trees. Also there will be a list of trees and a map of their placement. e next meeting of Great Bend Garden Club will be at 10 a.m. on March 21 in the Barton County Extension meeting room. Jeannine Girton will be the hostess and also provide the program. Anyone inter- ested in gardening is invited and welcome. At their February meet-ing nine members of Great Bend Garden Club heard Toni Rice, President of the Great Bend Tree Board, tell of the three member board’s many interesting activities.

Th eir purposes include promoting, planting, and maintaining the city’s trees; education in the schools; beautifi cation; Arbor Day activities; and required Tree City projects. Continuing activities include a poster contest for 5th graders with the winner getting to select and plant a tree in Vet’s Park’s Argonne Forest and also an at-home redbud planting project for 4th graders. Th ey have sponsored a “trick or tree” photo contest at Halloween time with awards for the largest tree circumference, the most historical, and one for beautiful foliage. Th e Tree Board provides rebates both for removal of city approved dead trees, and planting of designated varieties of trees. A bro-chure available at the Court House lists the approved trees.

A several-year project in the Argonne Forest section of Vet’s Park is reaching

its conclusion with the completion of the signage naming of the varieties of trees in the Forrest, and the building of a beautiful entrance gazebo, with its historical and informative plaques and statue.

Historically, the story of the Great Bend soldiers who during World War I fought in the Battle in the Argonne Forest in France at the end of the war and where so many gave their lives, gives understanding to why the name Argonne is so prominently used in Great Bend and why that name designates the forest section of the park.

However an ongoing project for the Argonne Forest is to refresh, re-furbish, regenerate, and replant, and fertilize the forest’s trees. Also there will be a list of trees and a map of their placement.

Th e next meeting of Great Bend Garden Club will be at 10 a.m. on March 21 in the Barton County Extension meeting room. Jeannine Girton will be the hostess and also provide the program. Anyone inter-ested in gardening is invited and welcome.
