Welcome to SLP 2013!

Dear Summer Learning Participants,

Congratulations and welcome to the College of Dentistry at UF. We are glad you are here and look forward to getting to know you over the next three weeks. The Summer Learning Program, which is now in its 12th year, was developed to recruit the best and brightest to the field of dentistry. You are now considered part of this elite group.

In this program, you will explore dentistry as a career, you will learn about the admissions process and how to become a successful dental school applicant and hopefully, you will learn about yourself. The one thing I know for sure is that you will be very busy!

I want to encourage all of you to use your time well here. Get to know each other--in years to come, you will be a source of support to one another. Take the time to talk to UFCD’s dental students and faculty; they can be an excel-lent source of information for you. Take every opportunity that is offered to you seriously; if a shadowing experience or workshop is not going as you’d hoped, I encourage you to take ownership of your time and look for ways to improve your experience.

I hope you have a most excellent experience! Please do not hesitate to seek me out with any questions, ideas and concerns.

About the Program

The Summer Learning Program (SLP) was started in 2002 and originally known as “Summer of Learning” or “SOL.” Over the years, the program, currently funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), has developed and grown both in participant size and programming. The idea came from Dr. Nelson Logan, who was a previous director of multicultural affairs at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. He wanted to offer a program that allowed pre-dental students to explore dentistry and the admissions process while promoting student self-reflection. SLP, an immersive learning program for Florida residents from educationally or economically disadvantaged backgrounds or ethnic minority students, is offered to improve education for all, increase diversity, and improve access to care. The program offers a number of workshops including seminars about applying to dental school and hands-on lab activities to create dental models and perform dental procedures. From DAT test preps and professional etiquette workshops to speaker events from dental professionals, the Summer Learning Program has much to offer to its students. Additionally, SLP participants will have a chance to experience life on the University of Florida campus and in the city of Gainesville through their free time and from the social events hosted by SLP to encourage students to experience the UF community and lifestyle.

Favorite SLP memory: “Sim Lab was my favorite memory because it really showed me that dentistry is much more than what I had originally thought it was. I had not been exposed to the lab side of dentistry until then, and it really opened my outlook on the career path.”

Alexandra AriasAdvice to SLPers:“Take advantage of this opportunity and soak up all the information you will learn within those three weeks! It will be a lot and at times you might feel overwhelmed, but it will be gone before you know it. Also, don’t be afraid to talk to speakers you meet, dental students,t or anyone involved in the dental school. This is your op-portunity to make great connections!”

Favorite SLP memory: “I think my favorite memory was on the last day when we all got up and spoke our thoughts about how this program had impacted us. It was really great to see how much we had learned in just three weeks and how many connections we had made, including with each other.”

Favorite SLP memory: “One of the most exciting days of the SLP program was when I had the opportunity of returning to the periodontal clinic to observe a bone graft procedure. I have always had an interest in linking surgery and dentistry, and seeing the beauty of the techniques used and how well the periodontist worked with the patient filled me with inspiration. Although this was only the first step of the treatment, it was exciting to know that in a few months the patient was going to receive an implant and a new smile.”

The SLP Social Committee works with the SLP Coordinator to organize social events for the program. Some social events this year include camping and tubing at Ginnie Springs, partner yoga, visiting some of Gainesville’s popular dining areas, and having fun at Gainesville Splitz Bowling and Gainesville Rock Gym.

SLP Social Committee members were previous SLP participants, and for this reason, they also serve as SLP mentors to the incoming class and can offer advice and share stories about their past SLP experience.

It really showed the impact SLP had on all of our lives and how close our SLP family became in those short three weeks.”

Favorite SLP memory: “My favorite memory of SLP was the camping trip to Ginnie Springs. Socializing and spending quality time with previous SLPers, fellow SLPers and Alyssa was delightful. Speaking to previous SLPers was enjoyable because they answered many questions and gave us very useful advice. However, my fondest memory was tubing down the river through almost-freezing water and just getting a kick out of everyone’s reaction to the painfully cold water.”

Meet the SLP Class of 2013

BYRON AMADORByron is a biology major with a minor in nutritional sciences at UF. He enjoys fishing, exercising, and flying planes. He serves as a tutor in Project Progress, a mentor to at-risk youth in Project MASCOT, a volunteer of the Sydney Lanier School Fitness Program, and was social chair for the Pre-Dental Society. Byron’s inspiration stems from his parents, who taught him about perseverance. Additionally, his grandfather, who was a dentist, is also a large inspiration in his life. His long-term goal is to open his own practice in Florida. Byron is excited for SLP because he cannot think of a better way to learn about the dental profession than by spending three weeks with other pre-dental students at UF’s dental school, while also making friends and having fun.

CRISTINA ARMBRUSTERCristina was born in New Port Richey, Fla., to parents Carmen and Thomas, who inspired her to be the person she is today. The oldest of four siblings, Cristina knows what it means to be responsible and act as a role model for others. Her family also continues to support her hopes and dreams for dental school. As a rising UF junior in microbiology and cell science, she has a strong interest in immunology and also favors organic chemistry. When not in class, Cristina can be found in the UF Immunology Lab looking at different processes that contribute to autoimmunity. She will also serve as vice president for Gator Advocates for World Health this year, which redistributes excess medical supplies to Guatemala and Haiti and organizes trips to these countries. She hopes to pursue a career in dentistry and bring health and education to many peo-ple. From SLP, she hopes to gain vital input of the dental profession and meet a variety of wonderful people.

ALEXANDRA BROWN

Alexandra is majoring in biomedical sciences and minoring in art studio at the University of Central Florida. She would describe herself as dedicated, kind, and positive. Her dental career goals include attending and graduating from dental school and then owning her own practice. Alexandra is currently involved in UCF’s Multicultural Association of Pre-Health Students and Pre-Dental ASDA. She is very excited to have been chosen to participate in SLP and looks forward to all of the hands-on work that she will be doing.

GABRIEL CHARLES

Gabriel began his interest in healthcare at a very young age that stemmed from the illness of his mother. His ultimate goals are to become a great dentist and be able to offer the best care to his mother. Gabriel said that his journey is long and challenging, but that the fruit of his success will be delicious. Gabriel describes himself as honest, responsible, and positive. Gabriel currently attends Miami Dade College and majors in pre-medical science/dentistry. He also enjoys watching medical-based TV shows, such as Grey’s Anatomy and House.


Meet the SLP Class of 2013KIMBERLY GARCIA GONZALEZKimberly was born and raised in Venezuela. She came to the U.S. at age 17 after graduating from high school. She began pursuing her A.A. degree at Seminole State College after becoming English proficient. Currently, she is at the University of Central Florida majoring in biomedical sciences with a minor in sociology. She enjoys playing tennis, riding her bike, and dancing. Dentistry and the science of medicine have always fascinated her. She is a director at UCF’s Pre-Dental ASDA and also recently began volunteering as a dental assistant at Harvest Time International, where she has been able to help provide dental care to people in need. She said that being a dental assist-ant is an everyday motivation to work hard at school, so that someday, she will be able to provide dental care herself.

JESUS HERNANDEZJesus was born in Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico, and has been living in Florida since he was two years old. He will transfer to UF in Fall 2013, majoring in biology and minoring in nutrition. Jesus’ hobbies include drawing, soccer, and video games. He is described as sociable, organized, and dedicated. At South Florida State College, he was involved in Phi Theta Kappa, Soccer Club, and the Student Government Association. His career goal is to obtain a dental degree and return to his hometown to work with a local dentist or open his own practice. He largely hopes to help the Hispanic population in his area. Jesus is inspired by his parents, who never had the opportunity to study. Jesus said that this SLP opportunity is a “stepping stone for my American Dream.”

IRENE ISAZAIrene’s career goal is to become a reputable dentist in a solo practice or practice with a few associates. She was president of the Student Health Advisory Club at Salt Lake Community College for two years and is currently an honorary member of Pre-Dental ASDA at UCF. As a musical enthusiast, Irene enjoys playing the guitar and singing, and she was also a part of her local church’s Worship Arts singing team. During her involvement in the Health Occupation Student Association, she received national rec-ognition for winning first place in a dental terminology competition. Irene is inspired by her step-mom Cindy who helped Irene realize the significance of perseverance when it comes to living a life that one imagines. Irene’s dad also inspires her on a daily basis by celebrating her every success and constantly pushing her to work hard. He is the one responsible for instilling Irene’s value of being a life-long learner.

JOSE JACASJose came to the U.S. in 2003 after being born in Bayamo, Cuba, and living in Cara-cas, Venezuela, with his family for ten years. As an involved high school student, he competed in state-level competitions for his track and cross country teams, took private art lessons with artist Willin Del Pino, and was also a part of the school’s swim team. Jose currently volunteers at Shands, is involved in cystic fibrosis research, and is the volunteer coordinator for Gator Advocates for Word Health. Jose, who’s role model is his older brother Sergio, hopes to one day be a dentist and to have the honor of taking care of patients, relieving them from pain, and educating them. Jose’s mother was always his dentist when he was young and his brother is currently a third-year dental student. This has provided him the opportunity to get close to the field and experience a glimpse of this environment. However, he believes that all he has learned so far will be minuscule compared to the full experience that SLP offers.



AMBER JOHNSONAmber loves to fish, dive, hunt, surf, and play softball. She would describe herself as hardworking, driven, and outgoing. Her dental goal is to become a pediatric dentist, serve her community’s disadvantaged and special-needs children, and travel the world providing dental care to children in underprivileged areas. She is currently a starting pitcher for her school’s varsity softball team at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Amber is also involved as a Student Athlete Advisory Committee member, Pre-Health Club member, treasurer for Pre-Dental Society, a First-Year Experience peer mentor, and a chemistry lab assistant. She is inspired by her faith in Jesus Christ and love of serv-ing others. Additionally, she was inspired to pursue dentistry because of her experi-ence with pediatric dentist Dr. Lubell. She also admires her brother’s courage to serve America in the United States Coast Guard.

GABRIELLE KLATTGabrielle attends the University of South Florida and majors in biomedical sciences with a minor in philosophy. She enjoys scuba diving and playing soccer, videogames, and instruments, such as the drums and piano. She would describe herself as adventurous, self-motivated, and surprising. She hopes to attend dental school after receiving her bachelor’s degree and specialize in endodontics. Outside of academ-ics, she is involved in church, intramural sports, and her campus’ diversity committee. Gabrielle is excited for SLP because of the experiences and opportunities that it will provide her. She cannot wait to discover more about dentistry and to envision what it will be like working toward and on her dental career path.

SEAN LAN

Sean is a second-year nutrition major at UF with a minor in business administration. In addition to dentistry, his three main passions are music, fitness, and competitive shooting. Sean enjoys creating music on the guitar and piano, as well as keeping fit and working out. He also used to swim competitively. He is a part of UF’s Practical Pistol Team, which competes nationwide. Sean said that competitive shooting teaches him responsibility and discipline, as well as sharpens his focus. Sean’s long-term dental career goal is to become an orthodontist. One of his greatest inspirations is Jimmy Page who taught himself guitar from an early age and made himself into the legend he is today. Sean is excited to meet other students in SLP who are as fascinated by the dental field as he is.

LINDA LAVADIA

Linda is currently studying biomedical sciences at the University of Central Florida. She enjoys cooking, going to the beach, and keeping fit through rock climbing, paddle boarding, spin, and kickboxing. Linda would like to pursue general dentistry or special-ize in orthodontics or pediatric dentistry. Outside of academics, Linda is involved in the Vietnamese American Student Association and Pre-Dental ASDA at UCF. Linda looks up to her parents and former orthodontist. She is excited to meet new people and for the workshops during the Summer Learning Program.



CODY LOWECody is a microbiology major with business and health disparities minors at UF. She hopes to complete dental school and then open her own orthodontics practice. She is involved in UF’s Pre-Dental Society, the Community Health Service Corps, and a volunteer at the Alachua County Humane Society. She played soccer for eight years and still enjoys playing for fun. One of her favorite pastimes is reading for pleasure, whether it be re-reading one of her favorites or starting something new. She would describe herself as stubborn, funny, and adventurous. She cannot wait for the hands-on experience SLP will offer her and to learn more about dental school and the dental field.

VALERIE MONCAYOValerie is a junior at Saint Leo University, majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry, in hopes of attending dental school after graduation. After dental school, she plans to specialize in orthodontics. Valerie first became interested in dentistry after she realized the importance of oral health while undergoing orthodontics treatment. She had the opportunity to shadow her dentist and has been in love with dentistry ever since. As a member of the Honors Council and the Pre-Dental Club at her college, she has a passion for helping others and enjoys volunteering in her community. In her free time, she enjoys reading, painting, and traveling. At SLP, Valerie looks forward to meeting other people her age who share an interest in dentistry and who share similar career goals. She cannot imagine a better birthday present than spending it in this exciting program.

IMARI MORRISON Imari is a biological science major with a minor in chemistry at Florida State University. Her hobbies include watching sports, reading, and hanging out with friends. She would describe herself as shy, ambitious, and kind-hearted. Her dental goals are to attend a reputable dental school, potentially specialize in orthodontics or oral surgery, and to open her own practice. Her extracurricular involvement includes FSU’s Pre-Dental Society and Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society. Imari is excited for SLP 2013 because of the knowledge that she will gain from meeting dental students, faculty, and other undergraduate students who aspire to be dentists.

MARIA A. PETROCHE

Maria is a sophomore at Central Florida College majoring in biology. She enjoys exercise of any kind, especially mountain biking with friends and family. She would describe herself as friendly, reliable, and patient. For her extracurricular activities, Maria shadows her dentist, volunteers at Munroe Regional Hospital, and is a teacher on Sundays at the United Methodist Church. Her family inspires her in everything that she does, and they are the reasons why she has been able to follow her dreams. Although Maria has never lived in a dorm before, she is excited to be able to spend this summer with an awesome group of students and to share three weeks with people interested in the same career.



PABLO RODRIGUEZPablo is a biology major with a chemistry minor at the University of Miami. He loves anything that has to do with the ocean, such as surfing, diving, and fishing. He would describe himself as relaxed, low-maintenance, and level-headed. While his dental goals are not yet clear, he strives to succeed and love whatever he will do. In addition to school, Pablo is a biology tutor for university-level and high-school students. He is excited for SLP 2013 because he will be able to meet other students with the same career interest as him, as well as staff and students at the UF College of Dentistry. His family and friends inspire him more than anything and give him confidence to accomplish his goals while having fun with whatever he is doing.

MICHAEL SOMMAMichael majors in biology with minors in communications and chemistry at Florida International University. He enjoys playing various sports, the current main one being golf. Michael comes from a very close-knit family, and his career goal is to open a dental practice with his sister, who is his main motivator and role model. Michael holds an executive board position in Operation Smile, which he co-founded last year. Additionally, he competes in a number of intramural teams and also helps coach his high school’s football team. After beginning shadowing at his dentist’s office over a year ago, he knew that he was in the right place. He said that fixing the problems of patients and having them leave with satisfaction is what he truly enjoys about dentistry. Michael is eager to work and learn all that he can at SLP 2013.

MARC TADROS

Marc is a rising sophomore who is majoring in biology at Nova Southeastern University. He is extremely excited to have an opportunity such as the Summer Learning Program. He is a founding father of the Delta Colony of Phi Gamma Delta chapter at Nova Southeastern University. Additionally, he was a Scouts leader of a large troop of boys and girls, ages 6-19, in Alexandria, Egypt. He is very thankful for this opportunity and excited for the hands-on dental activities.

ISABEL VYAZMENSKY

Isabel is from Boca Raton, Fla., and is majoring in health science. Her interests include playing sports, especially soccer, and going to the beach. Outside of school, she volunteers at Baby Gator and helps with recruitment for a research study at UF’s Weight Management Lab. Her goals are to graduate from dental school and specialize in orthodontics. She is very excited for SLP 2013 because she is hoping that it will finally confirm that dentistry is the path that she wants to follow.

SNAP- Free UF evening shuttle service. Stranded somewhere on campus late at night? Call SNAP. They can get you from point A to point B on campus during the late night hours- 8:30pm-3:00am every day- Call or use the phone app to request a shuttle to pick you up: 352-292-SNAP- Download the free UF SNAP phone app and use your Gatorlink information to log in and request a SNAP shuttle to your location.

Parking- Campus - Park only in areas designated for your decal (Red1, Any Red Decal, All Decal) - See a parking map at http://www.parking.ufl.edu- Off campus - Beware of roam towing - Make sure you read signs to see where you can park (ie: you can’t park in certain spots that require a “Neighbor hood Decal”)- Commercial parking - Beware of downtown and midtown area parking - Midtown has specified parking lot spots for certain businesses - You may need to use metered parking during the day before 5pm on weekdays in midtown and downtown area, especially during the lunch times (ie: midtown’s Tijuana Flats). Some midtown places have their own parking lots so you don’t always need metered parking.

Driving/Traffic- Gainesville is set up in a easy-to-navigate grid, and with a little extra effort, you’ll discover a ton of faster routes that Are off the beaten path- Avoiding traffic: - Secondary roads that parallel busy intersections like University Avenue, Archer Road, and 34th Street are good alternatives to use during rush-hour traffic. Use SW 2nd Ave. when traveling from campus to downtown, or 8th Avenue to get from campus to the Oaks Mall.
