Time sure does fl y when you’re having fun! As the summer programs and activities are winding

down, now is the time to start planning ahead for what the Tucson Parks and Recreation Department has in store for the fall schedule.

Tucson’s 236th birthday is just around the corner! On August 20th, the day will begin with Tucson’s Birthday Flag Raising Ceremony from 8-10 a.m. at the Presidio San Agustin del Tucson located at 133 W. Washington Street. Reid Park Zoo will join in the festivities with free admission for kids 14 and under. Also, in conjunction with this celebration, a free swim day is scheduled for all on Wednesday, August 3rd from 1-5 p.m. Please check the catalog for the closest open pool near you!

Tucson’s beautiful September nights will once again be fi lled with music! The fall Concert Under the Stars Series is scheduled at the outdoor László Veres Amphitheatre in Udall Park, 7200 E. Tanque Verde Road. Concerts begin at 7:00 p.m. and are scheduled on each of the following Saturday evenings: September 10, 17, 24, and October 1. You should plan on arriving early since these concerts are very popular and the good spots go fast! Of course, both the concerts and parking are free for all!

The Sixth Annual Family Festival in the Park is scheduled for Saturday, November 19th in Reid Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you’re not familiar with this event, please join us as the department takes the opportunity to showcase what we do best through fun games, displays, demonstrations and entertainment! The department’s mission is to provide a park system

offering high quality facilities, programs and services for Tucsonans of all ages and abilities! The Family Festival is our personal invitation for everyone to join in a free, fun-fi lled event.

Leisure opportunities are bountiful on a year-round basis with Tucson Parks and Recreation. Please call to reserve a ramada in one of our beautiful parks for your next birthday party/picnic or family outing. The recreation and special interest centers continue to offer a wide variety of activities and experiences for everyone’s enjoyment. It can be as simple as taking a walk in the park, visiting Reid Park Zoo, a brisk swim in one of our year-round pools, a round of tennis or a round of golf or trying them all. The Tucson Parks and Recreation Department, partnered with Tucson’s wonderful fall weather, is sure to complement your leisure needs during the upcoming season.

By the end of this year, the department is sure to look a little different due to the fact that almost 40 long-time employees will retire. The City will be losing a wealth of talent and institutional memory. I want to dedicate the fall Program Guide to those retirees for their years of dedicated service to the citizens of Tucson. Please join me in wishing them all the very best as they begin their journey into new adventures.

Refund PolicyThe City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department:• reserves the right to cancel classes and KIDCO sites

due to insuffi cient registrants or other causes beyond our control. In the event cancellation occurs, a full refund will be granted.

• requires a 24 hour notice for a refund of all qualifi ed fees.

• requires online withdrawals to be processed through Registration Services the fi rst business day after online registration.

Leisure Classes: Withdrawals after class/session begins will be pro-rated based on the date Registration Services (791-4877) is notifi ed. Refunds will not be granted once half of the class/session has been completed. Supply, lab and model fees are nonrefundable.

DISCOUNT PROGRAMParks and Recreation offers a Discount Program that enables low-income residents to pay a 50% discounted fee on selected programs and 25% for selected passes.

• 50% discount applies only to KIDCO, KIDCO Inclusion, InBetweeners Club, Jr. Leadership, Therapeutic Recreation, and Learn-to-Swim programs.

• 25% discount applies only to Center/Swim quarterly/annual passes, Senior Activity Card.

• You can apply at any Parks and Recreation offi ce. Call Registration Services at 791-4877 for more details.

To qualify for the DISCOUNT PROGRAM, The following conditions must be met:

1. Must be a City of Tucson resident (Criteria to follow below)

2. Provide proof of total household size: Applicants must provide proof of the number of people residing in the household. Proof may include any document that has the names and/or number of people.

Examples may include:• 2010/2011 income tax returns with corresponding W2

KIDCO/Youth/Teen/Club attendance policies:Check-In/Out Rosters - All Participants are required to check in upon arrival and check out before leaving on the Check-In/Out Roster located on-site. This means that participants that are authorized to walk home can check out and leave.

When you register for programs, you will be required to complete a Waiver of Liability and Participant Information Form. This form provides space for you to designate a ‘Departure Status’ or how your child will be permitted to leave the program (Parent Pick-up or Walk). Your preference is then listed on the Check-In/Out Roster. If your preferred Departure Status changes, please notify the KIDCO offi ce immediately and make note on the Check-In/Out Roster on-site.

Important: Your child is free to check out and leave from the program site. Staff cannot physically restrain a participant who is not authorized to walk home but is trying to walk home. If your departure status states that Parent Pick-up is your preference, staff will begin calling the numbers listed on the Waiver of Liability and Participant Information Form. It is very important for you to ensure that your contact information is up-to-date and that you communicate your pick up preferences with your child.

Robb Wash TrailA new pedestrian trail, erosion control measures and water harvesting areas were added along the Robb Wash, north of Speedway Boulevard.

Arroyo Chico Urban Greenway: Reid Park SegmentThis multi-use path is near completion around Reid Park. In the long term, the greenway is planned to be a multi-use path that will connect Reid Park to downtown. The Reid Park segment will follow the perimeter of Reid Park west of Randolph Way and will serve as an extension to the popular David Bell Multi-use Path. Other segments of the greenway are being implemented incrementally as funding becomes available. Funding: The Reid Park Segment is from Regional Transportation Authority, Impact Fees, and a Back to Basics allocation from the Mayor’s Offi ce.

Julian Wash GreenwayThis project includes the construction of a 2.7 mile linear park and multi-use path between Kolb Road and Rita Road and includes fi ve interactive/educational rest nodes, artifi cial Burrowing Owl dens, trailhead parking and restroom facility.

Marty Birdman Center (Balboa Park) Erosion Controls & Splash PadThis project involves the installation of erosion control measures to better protect the existing basketball court and will also include a small splash pad (water play area) for park users.

Lincoln Park Sports FieldsThis project includes the construction of a four fi eld lighted softball complex, including a concession and bathroom facility, parking and other associated improvements. Funding: $3.4 million in Pima County 2004 Bond Funding.

Swan Park Playground Improvements This project will provide ADA access to the existing playground, a new climbing boulder, table and benches and shade sails over the area to extend the time the playground can be used comfortably.

Reid Park Zoo – Africa Expansion and Elephant ExhibitThis project involves a 7-acre expansion to the Reid Park Zoo. The expansion includes a 3-acre elephant exhibit and a 7,700 sq. ft. barn for elephant holding, staff offi ce space, public restrooms, food service area, and interpretive displays. Funding: $2,285,000 in City of Tucson, GO Bonds, $900,000 in Reid Park Zoo donation accounts, $5,200,000 in private donations through the Reid Park Zoological Society and $1,226,000 in City of Tucson Certifi cates of Participation for a total of $9,611,000.

Verdugo ParkPark improvements include a new ramada with a small stage area, a half court basketball court, and ADA access and parking. In partnership with the Audubon Society, the groundwork will be laid for the neighborhood to teach and learn about passive water harvesting, native plants, and attracting native bird species to the area.

McCormick ParkThe existing playground received a new fabric shade structure. The addition of concrete sidewalk completed the east/west pedestrian access across the park.Cherry Avenue Recreation Center ExpansionThis project involved a 2,700 sq. ft. expansion to the existing center for teens, seniors, and multi-purpose use.Juhan Park Expansion – Softball Field LightingAs part of recent park expansion efforts, sports fi eld lighting was installed at the existing south, softball fi eld.Menlo Park RestroomThis project included the removal and replacement of an existing, obsolete restroom at Menlo Park. Funding: $167,100 in City of Tucson, 2000 General Obligation Bond funds. Oury Center Covered Basketball Court ProjectThis project included the construction of a covered basketball court, a new stage, bleachers, passive water harvesting system, lighting and volleyball court. The project also entailed a new play area and a stage sound system to enhance public gatherings and festivities in the shade.Udall Park Master PlanPrevious master planning efforts have been updated as a result of this project. The new Udall Park Master Plan refl ects the proposed Kolb Road extension of Sabino Canyon Road, new soccer, multi-purpose and softball fi elds, dog park, amphitheater, skate park, covered basketball court, expanded aquatics area, and a cultural resource area. The plan also includes proposed renovations to the existing USGS Magnetic Observatory buildings.

Rewards ProgramGolfers playing Tucson City Golf properties now earn free rounds of golf based on the number of individual paid rounds they play each calendar year at City courses. To participate, golfers are required to have their Resident Rewards Card or Non-Resident Rewards Card scanned each time they individually pay for a round of golf at one of our courses. Any golfer who does not meet our residency requirements may purchase a Non-Resident Rewards Card for $75. The Non-Resident Rewards Card entitles the bearer to all privileges and discounts afforded to a Resident Rewards card holder. Slow PlayTucson City Golf has implemented a system to increase speed of play on golf courses. Upon request of any Tucson City Golf employee, players out of position will be required to move into position. Players are considered out of position when the group ahead of them has completed a hole, and the following group is not on that tee box. Failure to move to the next hole when requested will result in forfeiture of the player’s daily greens fee permit. City Code Section 21-24(7).

Armory Park Center MissionArmory Center is a vital aging center that enhances the quality of life for persons 50+ by providing socialization, recreation, education, information, nutrition, social services and support. We include seniors in programming decisions in a clean, safe, pleasing and inclusive environment.

Human Services• Healthy Dinner – Mon.-Fri., 3-4pm, $2. Suggested

donation, a daily nutritionally balanced meal is offered while encouraging social interactions with others. The Meal program provides adults (60+) with a variety of foods from the basic food groups, leading to an overall healthier diet. (No Cost for Senior Activity Card if only attending this program).

• Transportation - Members who are registered for the meal program (60+) and live in the 85701 zip code, transportation will be provided to the Center for meals/ socialization. Call Ramona, 791-4865 one day in advance to arrange ride. $1. suggested transportation donation.

ADAPTIVE RECREATION CENTERAQUATICS FACILITYCome experience the benefi ts of water in our award winning facility. The Recreation Pool offers a variety of aquatic classes as well as open swim and lap swim times. Classes are designed for all fi tness levels.

The indoor warm water Therapy Pool provides individuals with disabilities an opportunity to experience the benefi ts of warm water. Some of the benefi ts include increased range of motion and fl exibility, relief of pain due to arthritis, or other conditions and overall relaxation.

Home to Clements Regional Recreation Center and Abraham Lincoln Park has a beautiful natural desert landscape. Amenities include a softball fi eld complex with concessions and currently under construction of four additional lighted fi elds, concession and bathroom facitlity. A swimming pool, soccer fi elds and 1-mile walking path can also be found in the complex. The site also includes ramadas, a playground, and four sand volleyball courts. The Children’s Outdoor Performance Area, Atturbury Bird and Animal Sanctuary are located within the park and are accessible from Escalante Road.

Presidio San Agustín del Tucson

The Presidio San Agustín del Tucson is a re-creation of the northeast corner of the original 1775 Spanish presidio or fort. A self-guided tour explains features including a munitions room, torreón (tower), commissary, and living space for soldiers and their families. An open Hohokam pit house is found on site, along with an interpretation of features that came before the Hohokam period.

A beautiful mural depicts early residents of the Presidio. A Territorial-era plaza, zaguán (breezeway), and Sonoran-style streetscape are also featured. Original period row houses along Court Street contain an exhibit space and gift shop. Natural landscaping refl ecting the period surrounds the outside walls, as well as a remnant of a boarding house that was located on the site. The presidio wall can also be traced as it existed downtown by following “adobes” set along the former wall path.

Living History DaysOn some Saturdays from October through April, volunteers in period dress from the Tucson Presidio Trust and Parks and Recreation docents hold “Living History” demonstrations on baking and cooking in the adobe horno (outdoor oven), food and medicine, spinning and weaving, woodworking, and leathermaking. Spanish colonial soldiers also practice military drills.

Recreation Inclusion Services for Youth/Adults:The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of recreation opportunities for youth and adults who are ready for Recreation Inclusion. Recreation Inclusion provides opportunities for participants, with and without special needs or disabilities to experience recreation and leisure time together. Adult Programs• Central Social Clubs for adults with developmental

disabilities, Thurs., 6:30-8:30pm.• Quibblers and Nibblers - Progressive-style bridge, Wed.,

10am-2:30pm. Partners are not needed; bring your lunch.

• Multiple Sclerosis Social Group - Call 791-4504.

Programs for Kids and Teens• Teens in Tucson, social club for teens ages 13-22, with

all disabilities, Wed., 6:30-8:30pm.• Juniors Active in Wheelchair Sports for children ages

8-18.• Special Olympics Young Athletes Program- activity

group for kids ages 3-7 with developmental delays.

Udall’s Dog Park offers off-leash exercise and play for both large and small dogs.

This one-acre dog park is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The Concert Under the Stars program is held at the outdoor László Veres Amphitheatre in Udall Park, Saturdays, Sept. 10, 17, 24, and Oct. 1. While the Udall performances start at 7:00pm, their popularity means that concert goers should plan to arrive early to ensure a good spot on the grass, as well as a good parking spot. The concerts and parking are free.
