The Prospect Park YMCA is Here for Good every day of the year, and never moreso than in challenging and uncertain times by continuing to offer life-enhancingY programs to our community. With over 130 years of experience and an addi-tional location at the Park Slope Armory we are committed to you.

Last year we reached over 35,000 people, more than 12,000 of whom werelocal youth and teens. We are so grateful to be able to offer programs and par-ticipation to our community despite their ability to pay. In 2010 every child inour Lisa Beth Gerstman Special Needs Camp participated on at least 50% finan-cial aid; we enrolled more than 900 children in our after school programs at 11locations throughout Brooklyn completely free of charge; we had the ability toprovide financial assistance to hundreds of members in financial crisis; andhave launched our new teen center.

Without the support of our community through the Strong Kids Campaign noneof this would have been possible. Your support of the YMCA Strong KidsCampaign gives children and families, in our community, the chance to growstronger in spirit, mind and body.

This year we have seen tremendous growth in membership granting us the priv-iledge to start more children and families off on the right foot through accessto healthy lifestyle programs at the Prospect Park Y. Please consider investingin our children and community by making a generous donation to the StrongKids Campaign this year.

To find out how you can contribution to the Strong Kids Campaign and learnmore about other giving opportunities please contact Megan King, Director ofFund Development and Communications at (212) 912-2371 or via email [email protected].

Thank you for helping to build strong kids, strong families and strong communi-ties!

All donations to the Prospect Park YMCA Strong Kids Campaign are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Strong Kids Testimonial“Both of my children, Grace and Andrew have cerebral palsy. CP cre-ates barriers and our children can’t routinely interact with childrentheir own age without skilled help. Naturally, we were very nervous tosend Grace to summer camp on her own, but after speaking with theProspect Park Y staff we felt at ease in sending her off.

The Lisa Beth Gerstman Special Needs Camp has been nothing short ofa life changing experience for our entire family. Grace gained inde-pendence as she adventured the city for the first time without me.Her favorite adventures were the Brooklyn Bridge Park, RinglingBrothers Circus and The Native American Smithsonian. After the firstday, Grace begged me to attend camp for an additional week- whichwe granted.

Grace has made new friends and is a happy child. As parents, we havehave the opportunity totake that time for our-selves and be adults.

We are all very excited forGrace’s second year ofcamp.”

The Strong Kids Campaignoffers financial assistanceto families in need and allof our Lisa Beth GerstmanCampers because everychild deserves the oppor-tunity to participate in asafe, educational and funenvironment.

Seamen's House

One of the most venerable programs of the Prospect Park YMCAis Seamen's House. We provide permanent housing for retired,low-income seafarers and a wide range of needed services toworking seafarers who are all at the Ports of New York and NewJersey. - When Seamen's House was first opened in the 1930's, tensof thousands of sailors docked in New York City's ports needing aplace to stay for the night. At the time, Seamen's House was there to provide temporary housing. Today, activeseafarers spend hours rather than days in port, however retiredseafarers face an acute shortage of permanent, affordable housing. Seamen's House evolved to meet these issues. Awing of 12 housing units called Seafarers Safe Haven is occupiedby our own "family" of retired seafarers.- Social Programs for Retired Seafarers are offered to resi-dents, including an exercise program and healthy cooking. Ateam of on-site social workers is on hand to help residents with any problems, and health services are provided by visitingnurses. A team of staff and volunteers, including our retirees, visits ships at the Red Hook Terminal and locations throughout the Ports of New York and New Jersey. Seamen'sHouse offers two services to working seafarers that no other sea-faring agency provides. We bring wireless laptops on board shipso that seafarers can email home and read their local newspa-pers online. And we bring the YMCAs health and wellness expert-ise to them, showing them the many benefits of exercisethrough classes and handing out free equipment.

MissionSeamen's House is dedicated to building the spirit, mind andbody of seafarers of all nations who live or call in the Ports inNew York and New Jersey. In dedicating itself to the welfare ofseafarers - the lifeblood of international maritime commerce -Seamen's House fosters good will and understanding among allmembers of the world-wide maritime community.Volunteering: Volunteers are always needed for ship visits, officesupport, technology instruction, health and wellness initiatives,as well as on-site services.
