The Challenge: International Postgraduate Studies in Water Technologies (IPSWaT)

Water is vital for life. Nevertheless, the efficient utilisa-tion of this important resource has become a challenge on a global level, as the use of water is increasing and diversifying worldwide. Many countries have a growing necessity of well trained specialists that will allow for future sustainable solutions to the arising problems.

Since 2001, 250 highly qualified students from 55 countries have enrolled for postgraduate studies in water technologies at German universities and universities of applied sciences with an IPSWaT-scholarship. Today, many of them are key ac-tors in their home countries. The challenging experience of ambitious English-taught, interdisciplinary study programs and top level facilities and laboratories have prepared them for future responsibilities. Some of our alumni have conti-nued with doctoral studies, becoming university teachers or highly recognised specialists in their fields.

Selection process

Every year, the potential scholarship-candidates are propo-sed by their course directors in Germany and then selected out of the ranked students.

Applications can be submitted ONLY directly to the partici-pating universities. INTERNAL DEADLINES may vary from course to course.

Funding

The IPSWaT Scholarship-Program for International Postgra-duate Studies in Water Technologies was created in 2001 and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

When I was a teaching assistant at Egerton University in Kenya, I was inspired to go to Germany by a colle-ague who got his PhD in Bochum. His ‘German way’ of teaching was different and I wanted to be trained in the same way. I like the systematic way of solving problems and the learning system which exists here in Germany.

Technological training in Germany is quite similar to teaching in China. The essential difference, however, is the understanding of complex system solutions for water management. Moreover, I appreciate IPSWaT’s links to the German water economy, especially the opportunity to participate in the Young Scientist Program of the Ger-man Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste.
