Needs AssessmentThis program is designed to improve the management of both common and uncommon medical diseases of the eye. Attendees will gain a better understanding of the diagnosis and medical and surgical management of a diverse range of conditions, such as glaucoma, optic neuropathy, idiopathic intracranial hypertension and endophthalmitis. Program participants will also be updated on cutting-edge surgical techniques, such as minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.

PurposeThe focus of this meeting will be to update the comprehensive ophthalmologist as well as the retinal and neuro-ophthalmology specialist on the latest in diagnosis, medical management, preoperative evaluation, surgical techniques, clinical outcomes, and postoperative complications management in the fields of glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, and retina, as well as research on future developments in these disciplines.

Educational ObjectivesUpon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

n Analyze glaucoma surgical management techniquesn Appraise the latest diagnostic tools in neuro-ophthalmology n Apply the latest techniques and pearls to successfully manage complex cataract surgery in

WorkshopS

The following workshops are available at no charge to attendees of the 2019 Annual Symposium:

Security Risk Assessment for Meeting MIPS/MACRA Compliance Instructor: Jeffery Daigrepont Friday, February 15, 5:30 – 6:30 PMOn April 27, 2016, CMS released the proposed rule for “MACRA,” which repeals the Medicare Part B Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) reimbursement formula and replaces it with a new value-based reimbursement system called the Quality Payment Program (QPP). The QPP consists of two tracks: the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Advanced Alternative Payment Models (Advanced APMs). This lecture will cover the following: What are the financial and reputational impacts of MIPS; what is the timeline for MIPS and penalties for non-compliance; what are advance alternative payment models in relationship to MIPS, and what are the eligibility and exception requirements.

Informed Consent Instructor: Hans K. Bruhn, MHS Saturday, February 15, 5:30 – 6:30 PMOMIC insureds earn a 10% discount on their OMIC premium if they are current, paid members of the ALAO, LAEPS, and MAEPS. A one-time 10% discount will apply for current NOAO members.OMIC insureds who are not member of these state societies will receive a 5% discount on their OMIC policy upon renewal.

The Forum will address informed consent issues that plaintiff attorneys raise in lawsuits. This course will present the basics of the informed consent, offer studies on how well this process is completed, discuss the surgeon’s and patient’s perspective on obtaining consent. To illustrate the importance of informed consent in a medical malpractice lawsuit, OMIC closed claims will be presented for discussion with participants.

The Ethics and Compliance Concerns of Using Artificial Intelligence Instructor: Jeffery Daigrepont Saturday, February 16, 5:30 – 6:30 PMThe adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is on the rise and solving a variety of problems for patients and providers. This session will take a closer look at how AI is solving problems and what’s on the horizon for the industry. As AI advances, we will need to consider the creation of ethical standards which are applicable anytime patient data is being used. To that end, this presentation will also address the possible downsides and risk of AI for medical professionals and examine the basic knowledge about how AI works in a medical setting.

Practical and cutting edge OCT; OCT Clinical Dilemmas Instructor: Drs. Hady Saheb and Joel Schuman Saturday, February 16, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a commonly used imaging modality in the evaluation of glaucomatous damage. The commercially available spectral domain (SD)-OCT offers benefits in glaucoma assessment over the earlier generation of time domain-OCT due to increased axial resolution, faster scanning speeds and has been reported to have improved reproducibility but similar diagnostic accuracy. This workshop reviews the utility of OCT in glaucoma and the clinical dilemmas you may encounter while using this imaging modality.

The French QuarterThis 12-block area, also called the Vieux Carré (Old Square), is the heart of the city and borders the Mississippi River. The narrow streets of two-and three-story French and Spanish inspired buildings have a unique look. If historic sites interest you, see the Gallier House Museum (www.gnofn.org/~hggh), the Hermann-Grima House (www.gnofn.org/~hggh), the Old Ursuline Convent, and the Beauregard-Keyes House (504-523-7257). You’ll find everything from fabulous jazz and five-star restaurants to strip clubs on world-famous Bourbon Street.

Cities of the DeadA high water table and an elevation below sea level resulted in the practice of building aboveground tombs. There are 42 cemeteries in the metropolitan New Orleans area. Metairie, the most beautiful, and St. Louis Number One, the oldest, are worth a visit. Tour companies such as Save Our Cemeteries (504-525-3377) and Haunted History Tours (504-861-2727) offer guided tours.

Plantations and Historic HomesThe Garden District, minutes from the French Quarter, features many stately mansions, including the pristine post-Civil War Van Benthuysen-Elms Mansion and Gardens (504-895-5493,

By Land or by RiverFor a different view of the Mardi Gras City, take a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi River. Sightsee by day or go on a dinner jazz cruise. The Cajun Queen Riverboat (504-523-0814, www.neworleanspaddlewheels.com), the Steamboat Natchez (504-586-8777, www.steamboatnatchez.com) and the John James Audubon Riverboat (504-586-8777, www.aquariumzoocruise.com) all accept passengers. For landlubbers, the Riverfront streetcars are a great and economical way to sightsee.

For FamiliesThe Crescent City boasts one of the top 5 Aquariums and Zoos in the United States. The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas (504-581-4629, www.auduboninstitute.org) features the largest collection of sharks and jellyfish and a rare white alligator. Located next to the French Quarter and beautiful Woldenberg Park, the Aquarium is sure to please young and old alike.
