We sincerely appreciate the incredible support we have received from the Minnesota Orchestra community: the Minnesota Orchestra musicians, Minnesota Orchestra staff, our Symphony Ball committee, and especially from you, our patrons. The Minnesota Orchestra’s popular Movies & Music series inspired this year’s theme, Sounds of the Cinema. The incredible transformative power of music provides immeasurable enhancement of movies and other art forms.
Thank you to Music Director Osmo Vänskä and the Music and Entertainment committee for creating the cinematic medley at tonight’s concert. Thank you to the musicians for your fabulous performances as well as for your generous contributions to the Fund the Music initiative and silent auction. Special thanks to Wendy Williams, Marni Hougham, Maureen Conroy, Akiko Fujimoto, Sarah Grimes, Michael Sutton, and Douglas Wright for their active involvement with the Symphony Ball committee.
Special thanks also to our talented and conscientious subcommittee chairs: Linda Murrell and Marni Hougham (Auction and Event Revenue), Wendy Williams (Music and Entertainment), Betsy Frost and Charlie Anderson (Marketing), Joe Green (Corporate Sponsorships), Karen Baker and Beverly Grossman (Patron Outreach), and Mary Sumners (Décor and Food). We also appreciate greatly all of the dedicated Orchestra staff members from every department who contributed their ideas and expertise. This has truly been a Team effort!
In addition to our Minnesota Orchestra, thank you to special guest artist jeremy messersmith, concert host H. Adam Harris, the Bryan Nichols Trio, Synergy, DJ Ander Other, Trivia Mafia and to the many other artists and entertainers, whose talents added so much energy and pizazz to the event.

We offer our sincere gratitude for the amazing support from our many Corporate and Patron Sponsors, with a special thank you to our presenting sponsor, Best Buy/Geek Squad.
And we are particularly grateful to Minnesota Orchestra Board Chair Marilyn Carlson Nelson and President/CEO Kevin Smith for their superlative leadership and support!
An event of this magnitude is possible only with the support and assistance of a great many individuals and companies. On the following pages we offer thanks to all of our valued partners, including sponsors, artists, vendors, donors, collaborators, volunteers and supporters. We could not have done this without all of you!
Thank you for joining us in celebrating the magic of music in the movies while supporting such an incredible cause! Your investment in our Orchestra will support its tradition of world-class artistry as well as its exploration of new initiatives to connect and collaborate with communities locally, regionally and globally.
Thank you again and have a wonderful Ball experience!

Tonight, at our glamorous Sounds of the Cinema Symphony Ball, we celebrate the cinematic scores that play a starring role in so many Hollywood movies. For many of us, though, the biggest stars tonight are without question our inimitable Honorary Ball Chairs, Luella and Dr. Stanley Goldberg. For me, Luella and Stan have always served as an inspiration — setting a shining example for how to passionately contribute to community, how to care for institutions and issues, and how to raise a family. It is our privilege to salute these extraordinary, unswerving Minnesota Orchestra leaders tonight.
Luella holds a pioneering place in Minnesota Orchestra history. After seventy-some years of male leadership on the board, in 1980 Luella became the organization’s first female chair of its board of directors, paving the way for others to follow.
She presided over such an exciting time period: the charismatic Sir Neville Marriner was Music Director; concerts were regular sell-outs in the “new” Orchestra Hall, and the freshly-founded Sommerfest was a success! I had the privilege of working with Luella during this time on Scandinavia Tonight, a star-studded Minnesota Orchestra gala concert attended by Scandinavian royalty (crowns and all!). This was the only time in history that the Minnesota Orchestra welcomed royalty to a white tie event. The performers included some of the brightest stars of the day: Birgit Nilsson, Martti Talvela, Håkan Hagegård and Victor Borge.
Luella’s persistence, then as now, was on establishing trusted partnerships that would benefit the Orchestra and raise its profile. (Speaking of trusted partnerships, the Goldbergs and the Marriners remained lifelong friends and visited together just days before Sir Neville’s death at age 92 in 2016).
Luella’s connection to the Minnesota Orchestra dates back to college. Soon after she and her twin sister graduated, they were asked to work on a fundraising project for the Orchestra by the volunteer

organization WAMSO (now Friends of the Minnesota Orchestra). They signed on and, as Luella says, “one thing led to another.”
It became a life-long dedication. It’s easier to list committees Luella hasn’t led or served on than those she has. A partial list includes: Junior WAMSO President, WAMSO President, Board Secretary, Board Vice President, Board Chair (1980-83) and ultimately Life Director, a role earned in 1998. She also served as Chair of the Hall Dedication Concert in 1974 and as my co-chair for 75th Anniversary Events in 1978; she has been involved in significant Orchestra committees for fundraising campaigns, as well as music director and president searches.
Supporting Luella, and the Minnesota Orchestra over the decades, is her husband Dr. Stanley Goldberg. Their partnership has been a constant since 1958 at Orchestra concerts, events, galas and tours. They have championed the Orchestra on tours from New York and Europe to Cuba and, soon, South Africa. Stan himself has earned many distinguished fellowships in surgical colleges around the world, including the most prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of England. Their travels have earned them a broad circle of international friends.
Their civic leadership, generosity, never-flagging advocacy, and love of and respect for music and musicians is part of the stable foundation that upholds the Minnesota Orchestra. We are all more fortunate for their many gifts, and the Minnesota Orchestra shines all the brighter because of Luella and Stanley Goldberg.

SOUNDS OF THE CINEMA: CELEBRATING THE MAGIC OF MUSIC IN THE MOVIES
The centerpiece of the Ball is a musical extravaganza with Music Director Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra, joined by singer/songwriter jeremy messersmith for a special collaborative performance. Comprised of music from favorite movie soundtracks spanning film history, narrator H. Adam Harris will guide the audience through a concert of memorable moments spanning a variety of movie genres. From the classic Magnificent Seven theme of Elmer Bernstein to the joy-filled music of Rachel Portman from Chocolat to several well-known selections from the iconic dean of the cinematic score, John Williams; the orchestra explores the epic heroes, soaring emotions, and the grand stories of great films. A group of Orchestra musicians, staff, and board members teamed together to plan this tribute to the beautiful and inspiring world of music in the movies.
JEREMY MESSERSMITH
Born in Charleston, SC and raised in rural Washington, singer-songwriter jeremy messersmith began playing music in church at a young age, and like many homeschoolers, counts Sandi Patti, Carman, DC Talk and Michael W. Smith amongst his earliest musical influences. After a promising trumpeting career was tragically cut short due to braces, jeremy turned to the guitar as his instrument of choice and eventually relocated to Minneapolis to study music. A thoughtful, clever lyricist with a tender voice, jeremy crafts songs that are catchy and relatable, and span the emotional gamut from poignancy to whimsy. His most recent album, Late Stage Capitalism, was released in March of 2018. This is jeremy’s second release on Glassnote Records.
H. ADAM HARRIS
H. Adam is a Minneapolis based actor, teaching artist and cultural equity consultant. He works at the intersection of theatre, education, social justice, and community engagement. Recent theatrical credits include the world premiere of This Bitter Earth at New Conservatory Theatre Center. He’s a frequent performer with the Children’s Theatre Company, and has worked with Guthrie Theater, Seattle Children’s Theater, Park Square Theatre, and Pillsbury House Theatre. H. Adam has appeared with the Minnesota Orchestra in Young Person’s concerts and in A Scandinavian Christmas. He is a proud Penumbra Theatre Company Member. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater B.F.A. Actor Training Program.

13
SYNERGY
An established and popular dance band, Synergy has performed from Bermuda to Hong Kong for several major corporations. In addition, readers of Minnesota Bride magazine have voted Synergy “Best Band” each of the past 14 years. Synergy’s repertoire runs the spectrum from Sinatra to today’s current dance hits. www.synergy-dwmusic.com
TRIVIA MAFIA
Trivia Mafia is a bar trivia operation based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They produce high quality trivia nights in bars and restaurants throughout the Midwest (and, soon, beyond). They also run spelling bees, bingo, and other fine pub entertainments. www.triviamafia.com
DJ ANDER OTHER
Ander Other mixes that-which-was-not-meant-to-be-mixed, and makes it sound like it was. Ander made his name in the Twin Cities working behind-the-scenes at Doomtree Records. The California native got started DJing in middle school, crafting blends fit for backyard barbecues and extra-curricular activities. Since then, he’s rocked parties in many of Minneapolis’ nightclubs and after-hours after-parties, and toured internationally supporting Billboard-charting rappers P.O.S and Sims.
BRYAN NICHOLS TRIO
Bryan Nichols is a pianist, composer, and educator based in Minneapolis. Often found playing jazz and improvised music, but at home in a variety of musical worlds, he leads and composes for his own trio, quintet, and nonet in addition to performing, recording, and touring with forward-thinking artists like Nicole Mitchell, Ron Miles, and Olga Bell, and groups like the Gang Font, Dead Man Winter, and Halloween, Alaska. He is a recipient of a 2011 McKnight Fellowship for Performing Artists and a residency at the Kennedy Center for Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program. Bryan released an album of original solo piano work in 2016, titled Looking North, a follow-up to his quintet album of 2011, Bright Places.

AUCTION GUIDELINESWHEN TO BID
The silent auction will be open from 5:00 to 8:15 p.m. The live auction will take place in the Hilton Ballroom beginning at 7:45 p.m.
HOW TO BID
We have partnered with Auction Harmony to offer a seamless electronic bidding experience. Each item will have an electronic bidding tablet. You may also bid remotely from your smartphone. When you are ready to place a bid, log in with your bidder number, place a bid or set a maximum bid (see Bidding Strategy). Once your bid has been placed, you will be immediately notified if you are the highest bidder, or if you have been outbid by another guest’s maximum bid. When you enter your first bid you will be asked if you would like to receive notifications via text message when you have been outbid.
BIDDING STRATEGY
You have the opportunity to bid two different ways. You may bid the traditional way, increasing the bid by the minimum raise or you can set a maximum bid. When you place a maximum bid, the system bids for you against other bidders until your maximum bid is reached. Once your maximum bid has been exceeded, you may choose to place a new bid. This is ideal for guests who would like to place a single bid on an auction item and not worry about checking back to see if they are still ahead in the bidding.
BIDDING LOCATIONS
There are two ways that you can place a bid:
• BIDSHEET TABLETS – these are located in front of each silent auction item and replace the traditional paper bidsheet. These touchscreen bidsheet tablets need just a few quick taps to complete a bid on a designated item.
• SMARTPHONE BIDDING – If you are interested in keeping tabs on your
14
15
AUCTION GUIDELINES
items throughout the evening you can do so with the smartphone bidding website. Simply enter your phone number at the registration table or on a tablet after placing your first bid. Within minutes, a text message will be sent to your phone. Click on the link in the text message, and you’re on your way to bidding through your smartphone. When you are outbid on an item, you will receive a text message inviting you to place a new bid.
AUCTION CHECK-OUT
Auction check-out will open at Orchestra Hall at 10:00 pm, following the Minnesota Orchestra performance. All auction items must be paid in full on the night of the Symphony Ball, by credit card, check or cash. For bids of $10,000 and above, the option of signing a pledge form to be paid within 30 days is available.
DETAILS
We have made every reasonable effort to describe all items and ascertain their values accurately. All items are sold “where is,” “when is,” and “as is” and it is understood that any items and services acquired by the buyer become the sole responsibility of the buyer. The Minnesota Orchestral Association, committee members and sponsors will incur no liability.
TAX INFORMATION
Current tax laws stipulate that only the portion of the payment above the stated value of the goods and services qualifies as a charitable donation. The receipt you will receive at the end of the evening can be used as a guide and can be given to your tax advisor to help determine your tax deductions.
If you are sharing an item with another person or group and would like a separate receipt for your tax records, please make arrangements to pay your portion directly with the Minnesota Orchestra. This can be handled at auction check-out with everyone present, or you can ask to have the Minnesota Orchestra invoice each individual for their portion.
