Brazilian-born brothers Seacutergio and Odair Assad have set the benchmarkfor all other guitarists by creating a new standard of guitar innovationingenuity and expression Their exceptional artistry and uncanny ensembleplaying still astonish even after fty years (next year) of performing Inaddition to setting new standards the Assads have played a major role increating and introducing new music for two guitars Their virtuosity has

inspired a wide range of composers to write for them including AstorPiazzolla Terry Riley Radameacutes Gnattali Marlos Nobre Nikita KoshkinRoland Dyens Jorge Morel Edino Krieger and Francisco Mignone NowSeacutergio Assad is adding to their repertoire by composing music for theduo and for various musical partners including such renowned artistsas Yo-Yo Ma Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg Fernando Suarez Paz PaquitoDrsquoRivera Gidon Kremer and Dawn Upshaw He has been nominated foryet two more Latin Classical Grammys in the Best Classical CompositionCategory for his piece for the LA Guitar Quartet and the DelawareSymphony entitled Interchange and for Maracaipe for the BeijingGuitar Duo

The Assads are also recognized as prolic recording artists primarily

for the Nonesuch and GHA labels In 2001 Nonesuch Records releasedSeacutergio and Odair Assad Play Piazzolla which later won a Latin GrammyIn 2003 the Brazilian record Obrigado Brazil was released featuring RosaPassos Egberto Gismonti and Cyro Baptista Seacutergio arranged several ofthe works on the disc which captured a Grammy in 2004 Their seventhNonesuch recording released in the fall 2007 is called Jardim Abandonado after a piece by Antonio Carlos Jobim It was nominated for Best ClassicalAlbum and Seacutergio went on to win the Latin Grammy for his compositionTahhiyya Li Oussilina In 2009 the brothers were featured on Yo-Yo Marsquoschart topping release Songs of Joy amp Peace which features other guestartists as diverse as James Taylor and Dave Brubeck In the piece Famiacutelia Yo-Yo plays Seacutergiorsquos composition featuring mother Angelina Assad sisterBadi and children Clarice Rodrigo and Carolina The release topped boththe classical and the mainstream Billboard charts and won a Grammy forBest Classical Crossover In April 2012 Sergio and Odair toured NorthAmerica with Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott in a program of LatinAmerican works as arranged by Sergio as well as some of his originalcompositions highlighted by concerts at the new Smith Center in LasVegas and Chicagorsquos Symphony Hall (and Tucson) In the spring of 2013Sergio and Odair planned another tour of their much loved trio with theinimitable Paquito DrsquoRivera as well as a record release of their projectDances from the New Worldrdquo nominated for yet another Latin Grammyas Best Instrumental Album

Duo Assad

Brazilian-born brothers Seacutergio and Odair Assad have set the benchmarkfor all other guitarists by creating a new standard of guitar innovationingenuity and expression Their exceptional artistry and uncanny ensembleplaying still astonish even after fty years (next year) of performing Inaddition to setting new standards the Assads have played a major role increating and introducing new music for two guitars Their virtuosity has

inspired a wide range of composers to write for them including AstorPiazzolla Terry Riley Radameacutes Gnattali Marlos Nobre Nikita KoshkinRoland Dyens Jorge Morel Edino Krieger and Francisco Mignone NowSeacutergio Assad is adding to their repertoire by composing music for theduo and for various musical partners including such renowned artistsas Yo-Yo Ma Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg Fernando Suarez Paz PaquitoDrsquoRivera Gidon Kremer and Dawn Upshaw He has been nominated foryet two more Latin Classical Grammys in the Best Classical CompositionCategory for his piece for the LA Guitar Quartet and the DelawareSymphony entitled Interchange and for Maracaipe for the BeijingGuitar Duo

The Assads are also recognized as prolic recording artists primarily

for the Nonesuch and GHA labels In 2001 Nonesuch Records releasedSeacutergio and Odair Assad Play Piazzolla which later won a Latin GrammyIn 2003 the Brazilian record Obrigado Brazil was released featuring RosaPassos Egberto Gismonti and Cyro Baptista Seacutergio arranged several ofthe works on the disc which captured a Grammy in 2004 Their seventhNonesuch recording released in the fall 2007 is called Jardim Abandonado after a piece by Antonio Carlos Jobim It was nominated for Best ClassicalAlbum and Seacutergio went on to win the Latin Grammy for his compositionTahhiyya Li Oussilina In 2009 the brothers were featured on Yo-Yo Marsquoschart topping release Songs of Joy amp Peace which features other guestartists as diverse as James Taylor and Dave Brubeck In the piece Famiacutelia Yo-Yo plays Seacutergiorsquos composition featuring mother Angelina Assad sisterBadi and children Clarice Rodrigo and Carolina The release topped boththe classical and the mainstream Billboard charts and won a Grammy forBest Classical Crossover In April 2012 Sergio and Odair toured NorthAmerica with Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott in a program of LatinAmerican works as arranged by Sergio as well as some of his originalcompositions highlighted by concerts at the new Smith Center in LasVegas and Chicagorsquos Symphony Hall (and Tucson) In the spring of 2013Sergio and Odair planned another tour of their much loved trio with theinimitable Paquito DrsquoRivera as well as a record release of their projectDances from the New Worldrdquo nominated for yet another Latin Grammyas Best Instrumental Album

Odair is based in Brussels where he teaches at Ecole Supeacuterieure des ArtsSeacutergio resides in San Francisco where he is on the faculty of the San
