Somaiya Medical College and Research Centre Title: Program “PRERNA” for felicitation of breast cancer survivors and women who regularly attended annual Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) over past 5 years Date: 26/03/2019 Time: .11am-1pm Venue: 3rd Floor Auditorium, K. Somaiya Medical College Name of Co-ordinator: Dr Padmavathi Dyavarishetty, Prof & HOD, Department of Community Medicine Participants were: Women of Pratiksha nagar community,Shastri nagar area, Almeida compound area, residents of T buildings. These women included breast cancer survivors and women who have attended the annual CBE at least 3 times or more. No. of Participants: 157 including women and other invited guests Names of Persons involved: All the staff of Dept of Community Medicine. Description of the Programme Conducted: The programme themed “Prerna” (Inspiration) began with a prayer invoking the blessings of Lord Ganesha chanted by Medical Social Worker (MSW), Mrs Priya. Dr Deepali Kadam, Associate Professor, anchored the programme. The dignitaries Shrimati Amritaben Somaiya, Chief guest; Dr Padmaja Keskar,Executive Health Officer;Special guest; Dean, Dr Vinayak Sabnis; Dr Shobha Kowli, Ex HOD; Dr Padmavathi Dyavarishetty, Prof & HOD , were briefly introduced to the audience and welcomed on the dias and were presented potted plants as a token of respect. Shrimati Amritaben Somaiya and Dr Padmaja Keskar complimented Dr Padma Madam and the department on undertaking this project which aimed at early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Dean Sir while complimenting the department on their work also declared the good news that a hand held i-device for detecting breast lumps which could also be operated by health workers with training was being donated by Maina Foundation. Dr Kowli described the journey of the project since inception.Shri Shankar Pandit had created the Maina Foundation in memory of his wife who had died of breast cancer and together with his daughter, Mrs Alka Shrikhande, President, Maina Foundation had convinced Dr Kowli to start the project in Pratiksha nagar. Dr Kowli also spoke on how the project activities were being continued efficiently under the able leadership of Dr. Padmavathi Dyavarishetty. The project activities were described by Dr Padmavathi Dyavarishetty and in her talk she stated that the number of women undergoing the annual CBE had increased manifold. Maina Foundation collaborating with K.J.S.M.C&RC is also financially supporting the treatment cost of patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The need for increasing the number of attendees for annual CBE was stressed upon by Dr Padmavathi Dyavarishetty and a simple way to ensure this was that every woman currently attending should bring with them 3 more women for routine CBE. This was followed by a small video clip tracking the journey of the breast cancer project founded by Maina Foundation. Then Shrimati Hirabai Padaya, a breast cancer survivor, detected during routine CBE at Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC), told the inspiring story about how she was able to fight and win the war against breast cancer with the help of the doctors and support of Maina Foundation. To make the program entertaining, a dance performance by Ms. Ashwini Jadhav was organised.

The outreach workers who form the backbone of the breast cancer project ensuring attendance for routine and annual CBE were acknowledged and felicitated with saree, as a mark of appreciation. This was followed by felicitation of women of Pratiksha nagar, 8 breast cancer survivors, and other 84 women who had attended at least 3 annual clinical breast examination sessions at UHTC. They were gifted specially made colourful bags as a token of appreciation. The doctors and the support staff who actively participated in the programme were awarded certificates of appreciation by Dr Padmavathi Dyavarishetty. A song specially for the occasion and highlighting importance of routine breast self examination (BSE) , penned by MSW, Mrs. Priya was sung. The entire audience sang the chorus pledging to perform regular BSE. The programme was attended by HODs, faculty and non teaching staff of all departments, office staff of K.J.S.M.C. and women and other members of Pratiksha nagar community. All attendees were given pink ribbons with an acrylic maina bird to pin on to their clothes to signify their support for the cause of breast cancer and its early detection.Lunch was served to all those who attended the programme. The programme concluded with the ‘vote of thanks’ proposed by Dr Ashima Bhaumik, Assistant Professor, Dept of Community Medicine.
