Schools and Programs The Rochester City School District offers: The Rochester City Board of Education is seeking an educational leader with a proven record of administrative accomplishments. The successful candidate should have the capacity to build trust and maintain confidence with the Board, staff, and community. Key to this person‘s success will be the ability to lead and motivate staff and students to higher levels of achievement. The next superintendent must be able to manage the district’s resources responsibly while ensuring that the educational needs of all children are being met. He/She is also expected to develop positive relationships with the local and state elected officials. The Board of Education has identified the following as the most desirable characteristics of the new superintendent: Rochester, New York, known as the Flower City, is mid-size with approximately 210,000 people who live in the city and 1.1 million in the Greater Rochester metro area. Over the years, Rochester has developed a reputation as a cosmopolitan arts town with many excellent restaurants, festivals, the Strong National Museum of Play and National Toy Museum. Susan B. Anthony, a women’s rights pioneer and a force to be reckoned with, lived in the city at 17 Madison Street. Today the house is the Susan B. Anthony National Museum and House, filled with photos and mementos of her life. Frederick Douglas and his family lived in Rochester for many years. He traveled the world to speak out against slavery. Rochester’s prominent role in the history of film takes center stage at the George Eastman Museum. It holds the personal film collections of Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, and Kathryn Bigelow. The Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra are at the center of Rochester’s cultural offerings. For live theater, Geva Theatre Center has earned a reputation as one of the best regional theaters in the country and leads the state in attendance. Other local theaters include the Blackfriars Theatre, Downstairs Cabaret Theatre, and Center Stage at the Jewish Community Center. George Eastman, John Jacob Bausch, Henry Lomb, Hiram Sibley, Joseph C. Wilson, Garth Fagan and others made a name for Rochester. As industries grew up around the businesses they built, manufacturing ruled the local economy for generations. A new energy of innovation and creativity is shifting the city’s course. Companies are emerging in biotechnology, imaging, optics, and energy research. Education has become a prime economic driver. The University of Rochester is the area’s largest employer and the Rochester Institute of Technology, along with a dozen other local colleges, is growing rapidly to meet industry demand. IMPORTANT DATES The Board of Education plans to offer a three-year contract with a salary up to $225,000 depending upon the preparation, qualifications, experience, and record of the successful candidate. A generous benefit package, separate from the salary, will also be included in the contract.

The Board of Education of Rochester City School District located in Rochester, New York, is seeking a highly qualified school leader to fill the position of Superintendent of Schools. The search process will be conducted over the next few months with the successful candidate beginning employment as of July 1, 2016 or shortly thereafter.

Robert W. Christmann, Executive Director of the Western New York Educational Service Council and Lead Consultant, along with Vincent Coppola, Ed.D., are assisting the Rochester Board in the selection process. The consultants will carry out the task of screening applicants and recommending to the Board a group of semi-final candidates. Candidates must not contact the Board of Education directly. The Board of Education will make all decisions concerning the selection process, the evaluation of candidates, and the final appointment.

First round of interviews with the Rochester Board of Education are tentatively planned for May 9 and 11, 2016. Second round of interviews with the Board of Education will be held on May 23, 24 and 25, 2016. This is a confidential search and the names of the applicants will not be released, except for that of the finalist, after he/she has signed the contract.
