The P esh w a rule started in 17 1 3 . D uring th is regim e th e cen tre o f p o litica l activ ity sh ifted from su rro u n d in g forts to P u n e c ity . In 173 0 th e fam ous S h an iw arw ad a w a s c o n stru c te d . D u rin g th e rem ain in g part of the e ig h tee n th cen tu ry , P une rem ain ed th e ca p ita l o f P esh w as. In 1818, B ritish forces o ccu p ied P une an d th a t w as th e end of P esh w a rule in W estern India.

As m en tio n ed earlier, th e c ity o f Pune, long before w as o n ly th e K asba P eth , on th e bank of M utha river. The s tra teg ic and m ilitary im p ortan ce of P une in creased from th e P esh w a and B ritish d a y s. In 1 63 7 , th e city co n sisted o f K asba, M urtazabad (the p r e se n t S h an iw ar Peth), M alkapur (the p re se n t Raviwar Peth) and S h a h p u ra (Som war Peth). Later on at v a r io u s s ta g e s new w ord s w ere e s ta b lish e d , ie.
