Sophomore applicants complete a rigorous application process that requires 4 teacher and counselor evaluations, a sophomore SAT score, student essay questions, and transcript. Students are competitively selected for approximately 150 spaces for each class. An admissions committee selects the best applicants from across all of North Carolina’s congressional districts.

All courses are offered at the honors level or above. Semester courses are worth 1.0 credits and count towards the GPA. Symposium (0.5 credit) courses and non-credit bearing courses do not count towards GPA. If a student dual enrolls, the course appears on their local school transcript using public school course names, weighting, grade scales, and codes.
