1993 1994

2002

• 1993 HART communication foundation formed, EDDL standardised

• 1994 FF and PNO adopted EDDL (independently and differently)

• 2002 FF, HCF, PNO enhance EDDL and add diagnostics – IEC 61804-2

• 2003 FDT group formed (informal cooperation)

• 2004 EDDL Cooperation team founded – HCF, FF, PNO + OPC Foundation

• 2005 FDT Group founded as an International Association

• 2007 FDI Standardisation project launched

• 2011 FDI cooperation formed with FDT, FF, HCF, PI, OPC Foundation 2003

The start of Field Device Integration

• Announcement at Hannover Fair

2007

• March 6th 2007 - FDT Group and

EDDL Cooperation Team member

organisations agree to work on a

unified solution – Field Device

Integration - FDI

• FDT Group will join the ECT as a

voting member

Why start this cooperation?

• Process automation end users ask for a single solution

• Current FDT and EDDL technologies have partial overlap causing a

competitive situation.

• Current situation is confusing because of conflicting messages

• Suppliers face expensive development

• Most suppliers are member of both ECT organisation and FDT Group. They

must invest in parallel to support both technologies.

Common objectives

• Applicable to any field device communication technology

• Applicable for all network topologies.

• Backward compatibility with existing EDDL based device descriptions

and DTM’s.

• Open specification that will become an international standard.

• Platform and operating system independent.

End user benefits

• Single and consistent solution irrespective of supplier to achieve

interoperability.

• Compatibility with installed base.

• Shared strategy and development by all suppliers ensures integration

of all devices.

• Clear technology direction shared by all suppliers ends uncertainties.

EDDL based FDI hosts will support existing EDD’s

Profibus / Profinet in Process Seminar 2016

• FDI Host

• New FDI device

packages are imported

• Existing EDD files can

be imported

FDT2 based FDI hosts will support existing DTM’s

Profibus / Profinet in Process Seminar 2016

• FDT2 Host

• New FDI device

packages are imported

using an FDI DTM

• Existing DTM’s files

continue to be used

• Existing EDD files can

be imported using an

interpreter DTM

The FDT Group • The FDT Group formed in 2005

• open

• independent

• non-profit

• association of 82 international companies

• Owner of the FDT Technology

• Responsible for maintenance, further

development, and promotion of FDT Technology

• Responsible for certification and compliance

testing of FDT products

• Dedicated to establishing and maintaining FDT

Technology as an international standard with

broad acceptance within the automation

industry

• Open to all companies that wish to participate

What is FDT/DTM?

• FDT / DTM • FDT = Field Device Tool (frame application)

• Follows a published standard specification

• DTM = Device Type Manager (device driver) • Compatible with an FDT frame application

• Open standardised technology

independent of device or system supplier

• Independent of device type

sensor, actuator, remote I/O, drives, etc.

• Full support of installed base

• Independent of communication protocol

Ethernet, HART, PROFIBUS, Foundation

Fieldbus, etc.

• Vertical integration by nested communication
