The two semifinals and the Cham-pionship match were taped by ESPN fortelecast beginning December 9. “You have to be on your game theentire tournament,” said Appleton.“There’s no margin for error when everyplayer is a champion. One shot missedand you can lose $25,000! The pressureis just incredible.Indeed, of the four international

champions in the event, Appleton hadto fight to defend his title as the reigning“Champion of Champions.” The Semifi-nal and Final matches require the winnerto win two sets, race to 5 games each set.In the event of a tie, the pressurebecomes intense with a one game suddendeath shootout.Appleton played US Open 10-Ball

Champion Dennis Orcollo in a semifinalmatch, which went into sudden death.Orcollo won the first set 5-2 and Apple-ton surged back to take the second set 5-3. He then won the lag for the one gamesudden death, and after trading safeties,he ran the table to close out the match. Van Boening, the 2012 Players 9-Ball

Champion, defeated the Jung Lin Changof Taiwan, the 2012 World 8-Ball Cham-pion, in the other semifinal that alsowent into sudden death. Chang took thefirst set by an impressive 5-0, but VanBoening found his stroke to claim thesecond set 5-3. After battling back andforth in sudden death, Van Boening ran

out to emerge the winner. Appleton’s final match against Van

Boening, featured flawless run outs andexquisite safety play on Appleton’s part.Van Boening was unable to get out on hisbreak four times in the two sets, whichleft him trailing far behind in a lopsidedcontest. the first set by a score of 4-2 and Fisherrallied back to capture the second set 4-3.In sudden death, Fisher was on her wayto victory when she failed to pocket thefive ball and Corr then quickly cleanedthe table for the win. Kim’s final match against Corr was

neck-and-neck, featuring precise runouts and fierce safety play. Kim lookedunbeatable as she easily claimed the firstset by 4-2. Kiamco jumped to a quick 3-0 lead at the start of the match. And Shane was not able to recoup from there. Warren utterlydominated the entire match and worked to a 9-2 lead withinless than an hour in a fast paced match. Shane was able to gainone more game, but fell 11-3 in the finale.Incredibly, Kiamco never had a close match nor a loss the

entire event, though the field was filled with stud players suchas Rodney Morris, Thorsten Hohmann, Corey Deuel, ShannonDaulton, Charlie Williams, Mike Davis, Johnny Archer and somany more. New Iberia,Louisiana - The 2012 Ozone Billiards USAmateur Open returned in its 7th year and saw it’s first sweepof the Open Divisions. Louisiana’s own Jimmy Majors, nick-named “Superfly” by Louisiana locals, went undefeated in 11consecutive matches to win the 8-Ball Open and the 9-ballPro-Am open. The events took place at Emerald Billiards inNew Iberia, Louisiana. The Ozone Billiards US Amateur Openwas produced by Dragon Promotions and coincided with TheChampionship Cloth Pro Classic events. This 7th installmentof this amateur extravaganza featured 7 total tournaments in 9-Ball and 8-Ball disciplines, with divisions in Open, Women,Seniors, Mixed Doubles and the Open 9-Ball which allows allplayers of any level to play. The events were sponsored byPredator, Pool & Billiard Magazine, Aramith Balls, andEmerald Billiards.

Majors played in the Pro Classic 9-Ball event but wasn’t ableto post a match win. His luck changed when he entered thebar table events. He went undefeated in the 8-Ball to claim the$1000 1st place prize. Then he entered the 9-Ball Pro-Amwhich featured tougher players such as Richie Richeson, SylverOchoa, Gary Abood, and more. Again, he went undefeatedwith wins over Sylver Ochoa and then Abood in the finals toclaim another $2300.

On the 8-Ball ladies side, Florida’s Chris Fields came backfrom the loser’s side and defeated defending champion AshleyKline in back to back double hill thrillers, 4-3, 3-2.

ficult. Over drawingthe cue ball past the X,even slightly, wouldbe disastrous since theangle on the key shot from there wouldmove the cue ball toward the break shotand likely make position for it extremelydifficult, if not impossible. Position B for the striped ball is defi-

nitely the worst of the three because ofthe slight cut angle it offers on thestriped ball, an angle that’s just enoughto move the cue ball toward the cushion, maybe freezing it there, but wouldrequire a very firm hit to bounce the cueball away from the cushion, all whiletrying to draw the cue ball to a spot nearthe X. The savvy player would look at this

layout and opt to stun the cue ball overto C. From C, all that’s required is a stopshot to move the cue ball on the solidline off the cushion and toward the keyshot. Position C gives the shooter a two-foot margin of error for speed with a cueball that’s tracking right on the line forthe desired position angle. Also, the cueball does not have to fall exactly at C toachieve that result. A cue ball that fallsshort of C by three or four inches or rollspast that mark by the same margin willstill allow for easy position on the keyshot with nothing but a small speed ad-justment, depending on where it lies. This one example gives us a nice look

at the kind of thinking that makes thebest players look so great. When wewatch professionals play and admiretheir perfect position play, we can do sonow with an eye for the choices theymake to achieve such impressive results.A good question to ask is what kind ofshot would that player have if he or shehad hit the previous one a little harderor softer? Very often the answer will be“a good one” because of a smarter choice.

Choices

Sometimes it can be a little frighten-ing to think about pool and the precisedemands that we continually face to playthe game well. When played at its best, the game looks so simple as we watchprofessionals shooting one easy shot afteranother. And, that’s probably what stopsprofessional pool from breaking throughto mainstream television coverage—thefact that average players can tune in tosee so-called champions pocketing ballsthat nobody would miss. But then whenwe try it, things don’t seem to go assmoothly as they should, leaving us towonder if we’ll ever get the hang of thiscrazy game. When we watch the best players at

work, the element that usually stands outmost obviously is their exact cue-ballcontrol. And it’s easy to wonder howthey can handle that white ball so con-sistently with such perfect speed and di-rection. The answer to that question istwofold. One, they’re simply greatplayers and, from years of practice andplay, they’ve refined their strokes tomanage position play with the sharpestaccuracy. The second answer, one thatmay not be so apparent to an observer, lies in the choices they make, very subtledifferences that we may not see, but onesthat offer a wider margin for error to helpensure good position for every shot.In the diagram we have a straight-pool

setup with four balls left on the table andthat striped ball sitting next to the rackin perfect, break-shot position. Thislayout illustrates a very standard patternto the break shot. Most players wouldidentify the solid ball on the left side ofthe table as the key shot, or the last shotbefore the break shot, since a stop shoton that ball into the side pocket givesideal position for the break shot. So, wewould shoot the solid ball on the rightside of the table into the side pocket,

then thestriped ballnear the rightside rail intothe corner toland straight-in for the stopshot on thesolid ball intothe side—asimple three-ball run tothe breakshot. Howwould an ex-

perienced player then handle this simplelayout? There are no real position chal-lenges in this layout, but in order to getthat break shot and open the next rack,we must get to a straight-in or nearly-straight-in angle on the key shot. Andreaching that goal with ease depends en-tirely on how we play the first shot in theside pocket. Let’s examine three choicesfor position on the second shot, thestriped ball into the corner. The obvious choice is to play a soft

stop shot on that first ball and allow thecue ball to drift over to position A for aneasy straight-in shot on the striped ballinto the corner. A slightly firmer hitwould move the cue ball to position B,and again an easy shot afterwards. Or wecan stun the cue ball a little further toposition C, which leaves a cut shot onthe striped ball. Which is best?A, probably the popular choice, offers

an easy shot on the striped ball but onethat requires drawing the cue ballstraight back to the X for the necessaryposition on the key shot, perhaps not soeasy as it sounds, especially under pres-sure. Under drawing the cue ball wouldleave an angle on the key shot thatmoves the cue ball away from the breakshot thus making it longer and more dif-

What Would a Sucker Do? If you look around the room and don’t see any suckers….YOU are the sucker!by Jacqueline Karol • House Pro at DownLo Billiards Chico, Calif. LeagueOperator & Tournament Director • www.BilliardsBootCamp.com

You have stripes here. You each only have one ball leftand the 8-ball. Your opponent’s ball, the solid, is sittingin the jaws and is directly blocking your corner pocket

shot. What do you do?1) “Bank your stripe in the corner!”2) “Slowly roll the your ball up in on frontof their solid to prevent them from hittingtheir ball!”3) “Replace their ball with yours by softlyshooting yours directly into theirs!”Suckers…You must assess each situation to come

to the best possible answer, which is theone with the highest winning percentage. Why are these not good ideas?:Bank shots are low percentage and if you miss, your oppo-

nent will most surely run out and win. Slow rolling your stripe in front of theirs with accurate speed

control is very hard to do and the cost is high if you miss. It isa high cost because their solid is in the jaws which makes itwhich makes it a “bigger ball to hit” meaning, easier to hit, because there is a bigger margin of error. For example, they

can pocket it if they hit directly into it kick it in hitting railfirst from many more points compared to a shot that is fartheraway from the pocket. Furthermore, it is very likely that they

will pocket the 8-ball to win because it goesin every pocket. Softly shooting your ball into theirs will

leave your ball in the jaws but you probablywon’t get another shot because you will leavethem an easy shot on the 8-ball.Answer: Use draw to put forward spin on

your stripe and call it in the corner. This willlikely result either one of two positive out-comes:

A: If you pocket your stripe, you can now shoot the 8-ball towin the game. B: If your ball does not follow it in and instead, stays in the

jaws, you have now blocked their pocket with your stripebecause you used a draw speed to set your 8-ball shot in thatsame corner. By thinking more than one shot ahead and assessing the

likely possibilities, tremendously increases your odds of winning.

At the right is a frozen combination that isn’t aimed atthe pocket. To redirect the 5 ball to the left, hit the 3-ball on the right side. This is surprising news to begin-

ners, even if they have college degrees in science. If the gapbetween the balls is a half inch and the line of centers is thesame, you would have to hit the 3-ball on the left side to cutthe 5-ball in.

The point to remember is that the position of the third ball iswhat influences a combination that is frozen or almost frozen. At the left, hitting the 3-ball results in failure. Hitting the 2-ball first throws the 5-ball into the pocket.

Time to Go First Class

During the week of the US Openplayers were crying about badrolls and playing the victim roll.

When you cry about your opponentsgood rolls you don’t understand thenature of competition. You don’t belongin a game like pocket billiards. Unfortu-nately, the majority cry when they getbad luck. It is almost comical to see anopponent in the chair throw up his arms, shake his head and roll his eyes when aplayer makes a lucky shot.

There are some great things happeningduring the match. You will show moreclass and dignity if you say, “Iplayed a good match todayand my opponent played justa little better than me.”

We all know that a missed shot isalmost always missed position. So youshould expect the cue ball to be in a badplace when your opponent misses a shot.Don’t cry about being hooked. Wouldyou rather come to the table for a kickshot or come to the table with the rackin your hand?

Now is the time for our players to manup. I coached a female player who madethe finals in a big tournament. Tied hillhill her opponent missed the eight ball,

it went three rails and knocked the nineball. My student jumped up with a bigsmile on her face and said, “wow, howhappy are you?” She ran over and huggedthe girl. When an opponent gets a goodbreak it is nothing personal. This girl is achampion. Unfortunately for pool, shebecame a doctor. It takes a mature playerto be happy about the good fortune of anopponent.

Play this game with class. If you are aworld class player you deserve respect andadmiration. Stand up and take your losswith a gentleman’s spirit. Leave a lasting

impression on your audience with yourfirst class approach to this time honoredgame.

Some players show their classless waysby bragging. It gets a bit much when ahigh school dropout talks about how heannihilated, crushed, ruined, destroyedhis opponent. Those verbs do not belongin this sport, a game that originated ingentlemen’s clubs. Cry babies and brag-gers will not build a fan base thereforethey do nothing for the sport.

I played a match many years ago in PA.The matched was alternate break 8 ballchampionship. I ran my four racks and heran his four racks. It was hill hill andwhen I broke, the cue ball went off thetable. My opponent took ball and handand set up for a shot down table. I wantedto let him shoot and call foul but I couldnot do that. I reminded him that heneeded to start in the kitchen. He ranthe table and I lost. Fifteen years later aguy told me about that game and what afine sport I was. You make a lasting im-pression when you can play this game as a

gentleman. No one wouldhave remembered that gameif I won.

Darren Appleton, uponlosing remarked that he played very wellbut his opponent played just a littlebetter. He went on to say he wished himgood luck the rest of the way. Mr Apple-ton did not cry about bad rolls, or luckybreaks.

Time to man up boys. See if you can gothrough an entire tournament withoutmaking excuses.

Play this game with class. If you are a world classplayer you deserve respect and admiration.

Here is a very tough shot that was included in the 2012Professional Artistic Pool ShotProgram. Like many shots in our

program categorized as stroke shots, this shotrequires a special stroke that would not typi-cally come up in an ordinary game of pool. Theobject is to draw the cue ball back into thehead rail and then into rail 1. After hitting rail1 the cue ball will hit the short cue, make itroll away from the blocker ball and open a gapfor the cue ball to travel through and pocketthe object ball into pocket “B”.Start by placing your first object ball along

the 2nd diamond line but no further than 3balls width away from rail 3. Next placeanother object ball in the jaw of pocket “B”.Place your blocker ball on the 3rd diamond. After, place your rack and a short cue in theposition shown. By rule, the short cue may not be more than 1chalks width away from the blocker ball. Finally, place yourcue ball 2 mm away from object ball 1. If you do not feel com-fortable with this try starting with your cue ball about an inchaway and as your skill begins to progress work your way to the2 mm mark. Remember to play object ball 1 more towards thelong rail. Due to the english you will be putting it will throwleft when executing the shot. Put maximum 5:00 on the cue ball and use a hard stroke.

This will allow the cue ball to draw back into the short railand the side spin will keep the cue ball moving so that it hasenough speed to push the short cue away from the blocker balland able it to pocket object ball 2. Enjoy this great shot!

Alcano Wins Championship Cloth ProClassic 9-Ballby Charlie Williams New Iberia, Louisiana- Ronnie “The Volcano” Alcano just

needed a little time to erupt. In eight consecutive matches, hewas unthreatened. Robb Saez was the victim in the finals, thought Saez had

been burning them up on his side of the charts. Saez had atight 9-8 win over Adam Smith when Smith faltered on the7ball case game, but Saez burned through his opponents afterincluding a 9-3 over Wang Can and 9-2 over Charlie Williamsin the hot seat finals.Alcano dusted through Bustamante, Israel Rota, Mike Davis,

Wang Can, Ralph Eckert, and Charlie WiIlliams. In the finals, Saez and Alcano both kept it close playing fast

and furious. The score was tied at 5-5, when Saez was runningout and shot an easy dead 5ball to 7ball combo. Ronnie calleda loss of turn because Saez did not call the ball. This turned thetide of the match and Saez was not able to regain control ofthe match. Alcano cruised through to a 11-7 victory.Sponsored by Ozone Billiards and Predator Cues.

Van Boening Wins Over Archer at Emerald BilliardsIn an epic conclusion, Shane Van Boening and Johnny

Archer put on a show for the ages. Both players were ontheir top A+ game with big runs and unbelievable come-backs in the 10-Ball Pro Classic finals. The finals between Van Boening and Archer started off

lopsided with Shane breaking and running the first 4racks. He went up 5-0 before Archer could mark a gameup. But Van Boening’s break seemed unstoppable and heclimbed to a 9-2 lead within 45 minutes. It looked like itwould be a very short night. But here comes Johnny!Archer came back and rattled off 4 games in a row

before Shane could stop the bleeding. At 10-6, the match wasstill heavily favoring Shane. Archer knowing this failed tomake any errors and was playing pinpoint position on hisoffense. He climbed to 10-8 to the thrill of the audience.Archer was rewarded with a perfect break the next rack as he

smashed the rack with power but controlled the cueball per-fectly. With an open shot on the 1ball, he ran out to tie it at10-10! One game for the championship! The final game saw Archer break, making a ball, but was

forced to play safety. Another safety battle ensued, and againArcher was able to get a look at the 1ball. Faced with a long offangle one ball, and having to force the cueball around 3 rails orplay safe, Archer opted for offense. He fired the ball and thecueball went 3 rails. Except the 1ball did not go in. Archer’sfirst miss in 10 games and Shane’s first opportunity in an hour.Shane was left with a short masse on the 1ball, which hestudied and made. And then had to force the 2ball in withfollow with the cueball off the side rail a hair. Though pressurepacked, Shane smoothly ran the table perfectly for the win.“We are going to do this again next year and make it biggerand better!” said Keith Hulin. Occasionally, shots come upwhere your cueball path to theobject ball is just barely

blocked by another ball. Sometimes it’sjust the edge of a ball that’s in the way. Ifthe blocker is closer to the cueball(perhaps a quarter to a third of the wayto the object ball), jumping over the ob-struction is often a solution. However, ifthe blocker is closer to the object ball(half to three quarters of the way to theobject ball), elevating and shooting acurve shot may be appropriate. In addition to being useful and occa-

sionally practical, curve shots are ballsyand fun. If you actually make your curveshot, it tends to impress the spectatorsand intimidate your opponent. On theother hand, if you miss badly, well, youmight look stupid.Let’s look at what we need to under-

stand to make “basic, easy curve shots”such as Shot 1 in the diagram, whichcalls for a slight curve around the edge ofthe 13-ball. Shot 2 demonstrates severalof the principles involved, while curvingaround the dreaded side pocket point.Shot 3 shows a more difficult applicationof the curve shot, curving around anentire ball.Begin to get a feel for curving the

cueball by shooting some Shot 2’s. Topocket the 2-ball, elevate your cue mod-erately (maybe 20° to 30°) and hitthrough the cueball with low, rail-sideenglish. You’ll notice that you can aimstraight down the rail and hit with theenglish shown, and the CB will take offat an angle a few degrees out from therail line. This is squirt (aka, “cueball de-flection”), and is caused, to greater orlesser degrees, by all shafts. Next, you seethe CB slowing down and then curvingback toward the rail. With a little practice, you’ll find how

much elevation, tip offset, and speed willwork for the equipment and desiredcurve of themoment. Ifyou’re notgetting muchvisible curve, you’re probablyhitting too hard. When you hithard, the ballmay not haveenough time tocurve theamount you hadin mind. Try softer. If you’re diving intothe rail too early, you may be using toomuch sidespin. Change one thing at atime.Just as with normal flat shots, intend

to hit through the cueball. You have toconvince that cueball to take that ele-vated sidespin. Make it swerve. A pokewon’t do it.Your elevated stick should point down

the initial aim line for the shot, allowingfor squirt and swerve. To understandwhere to hit the cueball for “low rail-sideenglish”, consider that as you elevate thestick, all the english spots on the cueballrotate upward with the stick angle.Balls only curve while they’re skidding.

So for curve shots, as we hit low, wecause backspin. Backspin slows thecueball. As the cueball moves moreslowly, the sidespin acts more stronglyand curves the ball off the line. Youcould think of it as “draw allows morecurve.”As we elevate more, the sidespin gen-

erated becomes stronger relative to theforward speed of the CB. In other words,as we elevate, more of the power of thestroke goes into sidespin and less intoforward speed. Hitting with elevation

and power is how players can producethe beautifully violent curves we see inmassé exhibitions. Note that massé shotsare generally performed with a nearlyvertical cue stick. Much tougher.Shot 2 can help you quickly gain a

good feel for curving. Remove the objectball, and experiment with various curvedistances and amounts. You can see youraim angle by looking at how much yourstick points outward from the rail line. You can watch the curves unfold and seewhere you veered back into the rail.Good clear feedback.Shot 3 may now be manageable (aim

farther out, more sidespin, less speed),and Shot 1 could become a no-brainer.Practice for even five minutes, and you’llhave a sense of this. Then, when itcomes up, step up and curve that ballwith authority.

Beware of bad breakers!

Here is a trap that can lead to very lop sided scores. I’veplayed numerous matches getting beat and thought I playedwell, but came out the loser. My opponent wins the lag andbreaks. He comes up dry or shoots one ball and misses leavinga couple clusters here and there. The table looks like I canrun out and so I start the attempt. Five shots in, I realize I’min trouble and now I have to go for it or my opponent willsimply run the rest of the rack. I get hooked or miss: he cleansup and wins. The cycle then repeats. DO NOT be the playerwho runs the front half and then gets stuck. Your initial “afterthe break analysis” must determine if the table is worth goingfor the run out. If the table looks tough: simply miss or playsafe early and set the trap for the other guy.

Pedro PiedrabuenaWins USBA TourOpen at Paris Bida inHouston, TX.by Doug Deitel USBA Director

From Friday October 19, 2012 to SundayOctober 20, 2012 eleven players from outsideTexas joined 15 local players and two fromDallas Texas to vie for the $7,500.00 in addedprize money. The event represented the firsttime a USBA Tour Open tournament hadbeen held in Houston, so everyone wasworking hard to ensure success!

What a success it was! The players andmore than 100 spectators who joined us weretreated to some of the finest displays of threecushion skills they have seen in a while. Andthe best surprise of all was that quite a bit ofthe exciting play came from many of thehometown players who fought hard in thispremier event. From the upsets in earlyrounds... to the great semi-final and finalmatch... the 8-Gabriels tables at Paris Bidaprovided the perfect surface for these mastersof the game to work their magic.

The final match was Live Streamed onustream.tv in spite of the technical challengesof low Internet bandwidth and low light con-

ditions. The effort yielded a very excitingmatch, which was recorded and can be seen (inparts due to the up and down conditions) athttp://www.ustream.tv/channel/dogloose-ch1.

The tournament format was also a rarity forthe USBA. After a preliminary round of fourflights of 7, 16 players were matched in a singleelimination final, which proved to be as excit-ing as anyone could have hoped. With everygame meaning life or death in the tournamentthe crowd and the players held their collectivebreath on almost every shot.

In the final match we were treated to thegreat skills and competitive spirit that have sooften been demonstrated by our two greatchampions - Pedro and Hugo. As was expectedthe points were tight and the lead was alwaysup for grabs. As the game progressed and the

USBA began a concerted effortto move its three-cushion na-tional championship tournamentbeyond the poolroom in order toexpose the game to others, andalso toprovide ourfeature eventwith the pres-tige it rightlydeserves. After

looking over the possibilities for2013, we landed upon a beautifulsolution: the Allen HopkinsSuper Billiard Expo (SBX) at theNew Jersey Convention andExpo Center in Edison. Thetiming was right—April. Thevenue was perfect—a privateroom on the main floor. Theevent—well, what can be said? The SBX will be in its 21st year.Allen Hopkins is a member ofthe BCA Hall of Fame. TheSBX hosted the Champion ofChampions tournament the lasttwo years. And, of course, theSBX is the premier tradeshow onthe east coast: it brings togetherbilliard players, cue makers, tablemanufacturers, case makers, cloth manufacturers, ball manu-facturers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors, spectators andothers. When Allen Hopkins ex-

tended the offer to us (andagreed to help financially), wedidn’t have to think long orhard. billiards mounted there was no way to know who would end up on top. Hugo had the lead at 21-18 when Pedro scored an impressive shot that brought a roar from the crowd. He followed thatup with another and another to lock it up at 21. Then came two more to take the lead at 23-21before his run of 5 would end. After making but one, Hugo sat down and Pedro took over onceagain. And this time he would not let up. While Hugo could only sit and watch, Pedro ran 6 toget to 29 before he would miss by the smallest of margins. Could Hugo match this effort? But thebank shot to the corner would not make, and Pedro returned for what would prove to be thefinal billiard of the tournament. This time it was Pedro who played the bank shot to the cornerto make the final score Pedro over Hugo 30-22.

Pick a Rail Shot

World Class Billiards “B” TournamentUSBA TOUR B+ EVENT held November 2-4th in

Peabody, MA at World Class Billiards.18 players: 3 groups of 6 to 20 pts.Top 2 from each flight + two 3rd place finishers advanceto finals.Double Elimination to 25 points.8-Finalists: 1st Bob Page2nd Joe DeAmato 3rd Tony FerraraBob FerraraEllis Lawrence Dave Van LokerenDave EgdahlNorman Zuluaga

This is an interesting exercise for getting tocontrol the force follow stroke. Elevate the cueball 15 degrees and shoot into the yellow ballwith the cue ball, using top left English with a firm stroke. Whenyou see the yellow ball fly off to the left rail and the cue balltakes a curve to the right with a little slower speed and head forthe corner you’ll know that you made a legal strike.See if you can make the cue ball hit the red ball straight on, andthen try to hit the red on the long rail side to score. Then for areal challenge try hitting the red for a point from the short rail asthe last rail. All the cue ball needs is to take a wider turn in thecorner. OH YEAH?

3-Cushion Billiard Tour “Shot-Contest”

The Rack, Memphis Tennessee

The Rack in Memphis,Tn held their 4th Shot Contest with 6 pool players that signed in and willing to test their skills atthe game of 3-Cushion Billiards. As the event date was set for Sunday at 1:00pm, on November 4th 2012, players had afull month to practice the shots. Entry Fee was only $15, plus Jerry Ramey

owner of The Rack also included in a free lunch for the players. Paul Frankel, tourna-ment director, went over all the rules before the start of the “Shot Contest” andthanked all contestants for accepting the CHALLENGE and then went on to explainto the players the format.

A small recap of how the 3-Cushion Billiard Shot Contest works.FORMAT: Players will shoot only 8 diagram shots. Each player will shoot each of the 8 shots 3times (24 shots total). Each shot is worth 2 points (48 pts max) and the total number of points wins.Three small round dots (stick-ons) are placed on the table, which represents the exact placement ofthe diagrammed shots. All players will have the same shot and same placement of the 3 balls. Thenthe dots will be removed and replaced for the next shot selection.

Special Note: After each shot a player has a straight rail carom shot (no rails required) as the ballscome to rest. If they make it, it will be worth 1 point added to their previous scores. This means that themaximum possible score will be 72 points if they made every shot.

The quickest way to get new players to play the game of 3-Cushion is to reach out to pool players

The 50th Annual Southern Oregon Invita-tional 3 Cushion Billiard Tournament was justcompleted at the historic Medford Elks Lodge.

Sixty players participated in the team event, andnearly fifty of those players also took part in the threeSingles tournaments that took place simultaneously.More than 100 people attended the awards banquet, including the family of Doc Miller, who had startedthe tournament back in 1963, and Bruce Braaten, whohad played in the very first tournament and alsoplayed as a sub in the 50th. Tournament attendeeswere also treated to amusing billiard tales told by BobByrne (who won the Senior Singles tournament), andto an Artistic Pool Exhibition donated to us by Dr.Cue, Tom Rossman, who also made an impressiveshowing at his first time in the team tournament.

Being the 50th tournament was not the only mile-stone for this event. In addition, it was the first time itwas played on modern Gabriels heated tables, thanks to anenormously generous donation from Bob Tracy and donationsof money and effort from 37 other players. Also for the firsttime, we produced a Commemorative Program for all theplayers including a history of the event, lists of tournament

winners, and loads of photos. A limited number of copies areavailable for sale by contacting Mark Williams, tournament co-chairman, for an order form at [email protected].

On Saturday, November 3 the SoRewardingCrew arrived at Felt Billiards in Englewood,Colorado setting up decorations, raffle prizes

and t-shirts to prepare for a fun day fundraising. Chalk-board signs throughout the room with sayings like,“Party for a Purpose,” set the tone for the 4-hour event. The crew was on a mission to raise money for the Bil-liard Education Foundation (BEF) and that’s exactly what theydid. The company’s unique business model combines party-goers

and venues with nonprofits to create a win-win-win situationfor everyone. At this event, a $15 ticket got patrons two drinks, chips & dips, free pool, a pair of complimentary movie passes(courtesy of Southglenn Stadium 14 in South Denver), and achance at some exclusive drawings. The profit from the ticketsales is then shared between the venue, SoRewarding, and thenonprofit. Many of the BEF junior players were present to challenge the

adults on the pool tables and the event also introduced a lot ofnew faces to Felt and to the billiard community. SoRewardingkicked off the spirit of giving with a generous donation of $500.Between the ticket sales, raffle sales, and donations, the daybrought in $1,000.“On behalf of Felt and the Billiard Education Foundation,we’re thrilled with the event’s turnout and everyone’s kindness.SoRewarding.com is doing some really amazing things in theDenver metro area and I hope more people get involved,” saidSamm Diep-Vidal, Executive Director for the BEF.“SoRewarding is dedicated to giving back to local non-profit
