in the world with over 2300 partners in the UK and overseas These

organisations provide opportunities for students to put their skills into

a partnership between three parties ndash theUniversity the placement provider and you

placement and the amount o creditsthat should be achieved during the

placement period

Professional Training Visiting Tutors

Students on a Proessional Trainingplacement are allocated a Visiting

Proessional Training Tutor who will betheir main contact with the Universityduring their placement

The role o the Visiting PT Tutor includes

visiting you and your placement supervisorduring your placement assessing your

perormance on the job discussing academicproessional and personal matters with youand i necessary mediating between you and

your company

Your Visiting PT Tutor will be allocated toyou beore your placement begins and will

tell you the structure and timing o the visitsbut you are expected to take ownership oarranging the tutor visit by liaising with

your Visiting PT Tutor and your placementsupervisor to check their availability or

the visits

In some departments one o the visits maybe replaced by a Return Day at the Universityor by a video conerence (eg Skype)

or telephone discussion It is extremelyimportant that you ensure contact with your

Visiting PT Tutor or the organisation o thevisits and or any m atter arising over thecourse o your placement At any time

A placement abroad will provide anopportunity to experience a different culture

and possibly a new language Graduateemployers value the additional culturalawareness and linguistic skills that working

Preparation is important or an internationalplacement We recommend that studentsstart early by checking the requirements

or visas and other legal documentationNaturally cultural and language preparation

and amiliarisation may also be important ndashmany international placements offer students

the opportunity to expand your knowledgeand use o a oreign language

More than 150 students choose to spendtheir Proessional Training placement abroad

International Students who are studyingat the University while holding a Tier 4

visa sponsored by the University o Surreyare permitted to take part in ProessionalTraining It is an integral and assessed part

o your degree programme and complieswith UK Visas amp Immigration (UKVI) limits

on work placements International Studentswho are studying with the University on

other orms o leave should confirm theyare permitted to take up a work study orresearch placement beore finding one

Keeping in touch

As a Tier 4 Sponsor the University o Surrey isresponsible or you throughout the period o

your work placement as i you were studyingon campus You must thereore maintainyour responsibilities as an international

student during your placement This includeskeeping your contact details up to date at all

times (via student sel-service) and inormingthe University o any changes to passportsresidence permits or your immigration status

The ull list o responsibilities can be oundon the Student Services Centre website

I you are on a Tier 4 visa the University isrequired to report details o your placement

provider and location to UKVI when yourplacement starts and provide updates o any

changes that occur The University also has aduty to monitor Tier 4 studentsrsquo engagement

with their work placement Placementproviders will inorm the University o anyattendance issues

Completing placement visits

You also need to ensure that you havecompleted the required meetings with yourVisiting PT Tutor in a timely manner A

lack o engagement with your placementwould result in the University withdrawing

sponsorship o your visa

Please note that besides your ProessionalTraining placement you are not allowed toexceed the prescribed limits on part-time

work outside o your Proessional Trainingplacement

Finding accommodation overseas

sub-let you a property normally used oroverseas contractors

Temporary accommodation

The placement provider will oten helpyou with temporary accommodation or acouple o days until you ind your eet Your

organisation may even be able to help youpay any rent deposits with an advance o

University housing

I you are based at a university abroad youmay be able to apply or housing with the host

university There are oten strict deadlines orthis so it is important to conirm your study

andor placement as soon as possible

Dealing with local landlords

Remember when dealing with local landlordsthat customs may be dierent with respect to

housing arrangements Always be sensitive toany cultural dierences and make sure you

I the tenancy agreement is in the locallanguage get it translated by a native speakerso you know exactly what is expected

Ensure that you check the legitimacy olandlords or estate agents beore you hand

over any money or accommodation

particularly when you are looking orsomewhere to live abroad Try to view theproperty and either talk to the previoustenant neighbours or someone else

who has dealt with the organisation orindividual I it looks too good to be true

it probably is

Students are invited to apply online for accommodation in their final year An email

will be sent by your Faculty to your University email account in late November or

early December with details of how and when to apply

Provision is made under the Health and

Saety at Work Act or the protectiono anyone whilst at work in the UnitedKingdom The Act places the responsibility

or managing health and saety in theworkplace on the placement provider

However as a placement student you haveresponsibilities under the Act or cooperating

with the placement provider on health andsaety issues

The position regarding the health and saetyo a placement student working abroad can

be a bit more complicated as legislation doesvary rom country to country Although

Work and study factors

These relate to the placement provider and to

the work or study that you will b e carryingout during your placement including work-

based hazards Control measures may includethe proessional knowledge and expertise you

have acquired during your studies

Travel and transportation factors

Driving and travel while carrying out thebusiness o the placement provider can be

a risk Placements do not just involve thework carried out or the placement provider

Depending on the nature and location o theplacement you may ace signiicant healthsaety and welare issues associated with

your travel to and rom your placement andaccommodation

Location and regional factors

The location o the placement can have

considerable impact particularly i itis abroad in a country that you are not

acquainted with Additionally it could apply

to international students enrolled at a UKhigher education institution and going onplacement in the UK

General or environmental health factors

You may ace signiicant health saety andwelare issues associated with environmentalconditions either in your place o workstudy

or the general location

Individual student factors

You are an individual and as such your

health knowledge skills experience andpersonality could have an impact on yourhealth and saety Students with personal

actors (eg health disability linguisticor cultural) which may require speciic

adjustments or support should haveequivalent opportunities in their choiceo placements The University encourages

and legally liable Some employers are exempt from

the compulsory insurance requirement These include

government bodies and family operations You should

ensure that Employersrsquo Liability cover is provided

Employersrsquo Liability

(Overseas)

Some countries have voluntary or statutory workmanrsquos

compensation schemes run by the state that offer

fixed compensation to people who are injured at work

but in some country placements there is no statutory

requirement to offer this and therefore you have no

protection from these schemes

Student Personal Insurance

(UK)

You should ensure that your personal insurance is

adequate to cover your possessions pers onal liability

etc If you use your personal car for travel to and from

placements or for the activity of the placement then

you need to check that cover is either offered by your

personal motor insurance or by the placement provider

If the employer cannot provide confirmation that thereis an equivalent policy or scheme in place

to protect you check that your personal insurance

policy provides some fixed benefit in the event

of an injury
