he professional part time Master programme “Architectual Lighting and Design Ma-nagement” at Wismar University is a unique combination of the study fields “Architec-tural Lighting” and ”Design Management”. The curriculum is modular and focused on

integration into the individual’s professional life. The central capability of a lighting designer, regardless of dealing with daylight or artificial light, is to design the interactions between architecture and light. The aim of the ”Architectu-ral Lighting” modules is to encourage the students to investigate architectural, physical and psychological aspects of lighting by using creative and autonomous methods. This is to be done while keeping human well-being as well as the standards of sustainable architecture in mind. The focus of the ”Design Management“ modules is teaching the students how to set up working groups in the field of Architectural Lighting Design. They will understand office or-ganization and how to improve project performance as well as the strategic management ap-proach. By using market analysis tools students can develop marketing and business plans. The ”Design Management“ modules also incorporate the concept of design as part of the customer’s value chain. The participants are provided not only with technological and design expertise but also experience the customer oriented view of professional practice. Our graduates will under-stand how to successfully develop lighting design concepts incorporating design, ecology and advanced technology. They are able to adapt these concepts to the diverse global mar-kets and also understand the interrelation of design, project management in relation to the customer’s needs. By gaining insight into market forces and management tools they are able to develop competitive benefits for their design ideas as well as for their office organizations. Our lecturers are professors and lighting designers from various universities and research institutes as well as from well known lighting design offices. They are specialists in the field of ”Architectural Lighting“ and “Design Management“, which ensures a high academic quality of the programme. The degree acquired is an internationally accredited Master of Arts (M.A.) degree. The part time programme started in 2012 but it developed based on the experience collected in the full time programme in “Lighting Design“at the Wismar University, which has existed for more than 15 years. In 2013, one year after the initial start of the programme, it was awar-ded the PLD-R award (Professional Lighting Design Recognition) in the category of education. One year later, the programme was accredited by a German evaluation and accreditation agency (ZEvA).

DAYLIGHTING

Topics:■ Physics of standard overcast and clear sky■ Sunpath diagrammes■ Interior lighting from overcast sky■ Daylight factor■ Interior lighting from clear sky■ Design of shading and sun controlsContents:The daylight module aims to further deepen the students‘ existing understanding of the qualities of daylight. Different theoretical sky models, sun posi-tion calculations and the resulting practical conse-quences are studied in great detail, through practi-cal exercises and assignments. The components that have an influence on the entry of daylight into buildings, for example the size and placement of windows, the glazing area, framing ra-tios and dirt and pollution factors are presented and their impact on the architectural design is discussed in detail. In the process, the students will also study the positive aspects of natural daylight and the harmful effects of excessive daylight. Energy saving potential and positive effects on health will be contrasted with problems such as ad-verse effects on thermal comfort, damage to mate-rials due to radiation and negative effects on visual comfort due to glare. Objectives:Students should have acess to the criteria which will assist them in the optimization of an architectural design.Furthermore the students should understand and learn how to design different shading systems in relation to the position of the sun and according to the different days and seasons the year and the pos-sibilities of integrating the solutions into the overall architectural design.

ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING

Topics:■ Types of luminaires■ Design strategies Indoor and outdoor■ Lighting concepts■ Luminaire layout■ Lighting calculation and measurement■ Simulation and renderingContents:Optical systems for controlling daylight and lumi-nous flux in lighting are studied and illustrated with examples for daylight controls and luminaires. Stu-dents learn the design of optical systems for differ-ent lamp types, to achieve a specific light distribu-tion including in general lighting, washlighting and accent lighting. Design principles for orientation lighting and media lighting are learned. Recommen-dations for the layout of luminaires are developed in order to optimize the lighting performance in a given space. Methods for estimates of mean illuminations as well as point by point calculations are developed and applied. Lighting measurements are demon-strated. The difference between simulation and ex-ecution will be explained and the benefits of both aspects shown. (A reader is at hand)Objectives:For a given lighting design, the students will acquire the ability to describe the required light distribution for luminaires and to specify the adequate optical system. Furthermore they will be able to develop ad-equate lighting concepts for a specific types of use, in spaces such as;■ Foyers■ Offices■ Conference rooms■ Cafes and bistros■ Museums■ Sales areas etc.

Students will be able to optimize a lighting layout and to scale the installation for required illumina-tion and luminance levels. The students will be able to validate their designs by taking the appropriate measurements.

DESIGN PROJECT I : CONCEPTUAL LIGHTING DESIGN

Contents:A specific environment of an existing architectural structure or a virtual structure is given. For this en-vironment either a complete renovation of the light-ing system has to be developed or – as with virtual architecture – a new lighting concept has to be de-signed. For both situations the conceptual design will com-prise:■ Artificial lighting of the interior or part of the

interior■ Artificial lighting of the exterior or part of the

exterior, such as façade lighting etc.■ Daylighting of the interior or part of the interi-

or, including the conceptual design of daylight controls.

Conceptual design of artificial lighting comprises the selection of lamp types and corresponding lumi-naires together with details of the type of mounting. It covers the luminaire layout as well as the estimate of the electric power to be installed. The final presentation shows the lighting strategies by means of section drawings and perspective views with corresponding light distributions.

DESIGN METHODS I: BASICS

Contents:The completion of the module “Design Methods“ will help students to develop various strategies to conceptualize a design process. Similar working

principles to those used in other design processes are applied, but since light essentially interprets existing features in the space, other priorities have to be set. In the first semester three different ap-proaches will be investigated. These will later serve as the basis for a student to develop an independ-ent design process.Different exercises like a 1:1 and 1:50 mock-up will help the students to apply an analytical and typo-logical approach for designing spaces. Besides hav-ing a hands-on opportunity to work with light, there is also the possibility to develop the lighting design “vocabulary” through analytical documentation.

LIGHTING APPLICATIONS AND SUSTAINABILITY

Topics:■ Analysis and abstraction of lighting problems■ Schematic solution design for combining daylight ■ and artificial light■ Criteria for sustainable buildings■ Criteria for sustainable lightingContents:Typologies of lighting requirements with respect to technical, perception and cultural considerations will be developed through analysis and design. An understanding for the relationship between light-ing design and building climate will be acquired. In particular, consideration for the energy usage of a sustainable lighting design and the integration with the concept for energy usage in the building will be taught. Objectives:Students learn how the relationship between us-age typologies and criteria for lighting influence the sustainability of the application of a specific light-ing design. They understand the impact of lighting on climate and design buildings according to sus-tainable criteria. They learn how to calculate and to demonstrate the relevant criteria to reach a certain
