8TH GATE MASTER PLAN | Damascus, SyriaProjects Credits | Chan Hui Min - Design PrincipalTrecia Lim - Designer [project coordinator]Raden Andhini - DesignerJohonson - Designer

Stage | Detailed master plan completed

The Eight Gate is an exclusive enclave that has its own style, design and character. A satellite city, situated only 12 km from central Damascus, the Eighth Gate will be home to new commercial development totaling more than 4.5 million square feet.

The Eight Gate is strategically segmented into three zones. The commercial Centre of Eoght Gate offers a european style piazza for convergence that encapsules a myriad of function. Anchored by the signature 30 storey office tower, the main plaza also embraces low rise commercial buildings and a retail mall inspired by the souks of old Damascus.

Next zone, The Waterfront, is characterized by a blend of low-rise residential development, high street shopping and dining landscape. Against this vibrant backdrop are a hotel and serviced apartment towers overlooking the waterfront and the main plaza. As we transverse the trail to the more intimate and private residential zone, we immerse ourselves into an environment that celebrates our innermost sense of community.

The last zone which is the residential zone, is augmented with interconnected courtyards and low-rise buildings inspired by Syrian housing archetyoes.

2007

The Adminopolis is a prototype city which will be located on the east and west coasts of Saudi Arabia. The potential site locations are chosen based on the neutrality of the site, taking into account the vehicular network, and proximity to neighbouring infrastructure, existing longer established urban centers.

The client brief called for the city to be expandable. Within a given site, a transportation grid is the best method to plan for expansion when the land use of future precincts is yet to be determined. A nominal grid of 5x5 km was used for this exercise. This creates sizeable plots within which each phase may be developed. Initial developments should be phased in along existing infrastructural arteries or main highways. Axial connection can relate cities from across such higways.

The city has a green symmetrical axis in the core, which connects all the five main precincts together. Each of these precinct has its own micro core institution; such as convention center zone, Sport Hub Zone, Tech Park Zone, the King’s Palace, and the Main Mosque.

The main Green Axis is a big open 3 kilometer long and 200 meter wide green space with water feature in the middle, projecting from the entrance of the city up to the great mosque in the end. The green belt is intertwined by an organic shaped landscape network that ties the government precinct and commercial precinct along the mall with pedestrian path ways.

The Adminopolis is designed with the following key principles: Simple hierarchy of space | Medium density core | Capacity for future expansion | Pedestrian friendly green network

BAWADI MASTER PLAN [revitalization] | Dubai, UAE

Projects Credits | Chan Hui Min - Design PrincipalRaden Andhini - Designer [project coordinator]Krisnamurti Lumenta - DesignerYau Jung Jian - Designer

Stage | Concept master plan - competition

For centuries, man has sought to address his relationship with nature through building shelter. History is replete with many architectural examples that celebrate man’s place in the cosmos.

This design proposal follows in the tradition of embracing the wonder of nature through architectural expression and spatial experience. The design team hopes to harness the spirit of living in harmony with nature in the design, through allegorical, experiential and technological means.

The design team aspired to introduce a theme to the master plan design that aims to transcend ephemeral trends and fashion. A monument that is iconic in form, yet simple enough to serve as a backdrop for the “soft” programs that make up the excite-ment of environments such as Times Square, Shibuya and the Las Vegas Strip.

The following design strategies were employed:

1) Simple geometric forms make the buildings around Bawadi Square stand out from its surroundings and make richly sculptural spaces on the ground.

2) Monumental scale of nature-inspired built environment evokes a celebration of man’s connection with nature, space and time.

3) Spirit of harmony with nature enhanced by ecologically friendly building features.

Key Design drivers

To create an Iconic Place of international significance. A place that can be identified easily by the world.

Integrated mixed use and inter-connected blocks - maximizing pedestrian experience with continuous excitement and varied attractions.

Experiences of various activity levels strung together with a continuous green corridor to provide a singular identity to the entire Emaar Bawadi master plan.

Stage | Concept Master Plan completed

Exploiting the natural terrain of the site, the retail village cascades down hill towards the sea, and allow pedestrians to access the supermarket below the Cineplex via activity courtyards at different levels. The level changes were also exploited to seg-regate service traffic from visitor experiences.

The retail areas closer to the residential apartment clusters are mediated by a mixed-use zone that combines ground floor retail around an activity courtyard, and luxuri-ous apartments above. This is to create a vibrant village lifestyle that will ensure continuous occupancy of the area past business hours, thereby preventing an “activ-ity dead zone” in the project.

8TH GATE MALL | Damascus, Syria

Stage | Detailed Concept Design completed

Damascus has a mild mediterranean weather that presents the opportunity for creating distinct indoor and outdoor environments that can be enjoyed by visitors at different times of the year. In the western half, visitors are able to shop, dine and relax in the comfort of an indoor space. Whilst in the eastern half, visitors enjoy a village-like outdoor space with al fresco dining and luxury brands.

The original brief from the client called for a 100% outdoor lifestyle mall. However, the topography and the size of the site presented a challenge to imple-ment this concept. The mall design takes advantage of the topography of the site and creates multiple “ground floor” access points that reach different floors. Great care was taken to ensure that the retail circulation was continuous and looped to avoid dead ends. The sightlines to the shopfronts were also studied in great detail. The retail layout is further subdivided into various thematic zones: Water Zone, Central Galleria, Fire Court and Earth Court, each corresponding to the respective “ground floor” access points.

Key Client Design Requirements

1) Take advantage of the prime views over the ocean and old town Dubai

2) Prime attention to selecting environmentally friendly design patters to meet the Green Building Rat-ing System LEED standards.

3) Meet highest Standards in terms of efficiency of the office space.

4) To create an iconic office tower as the gateway to the DMC area.

The design concept for the tower is based on narrating man’s harmony with nature. The spirit of the maritime environment, evoking the experience of the waterfront, coastal breeze and greenery, is the inspiration for the form of the building, its relationship with the exterior/urban surroundings, the spatial experience of the elevated gardens and the green technologies used in the design.2007
