A Word from ourPresident

winter 2018 Professional Photographers Society of New York State Page 4

If you haven’t heard, there is some exciting news for PPSNYS members about our upcoming convention, FocusNY, at the Villa Roma on March 2-4, IT WILL BE FREE! Members who have paid their 2019 dues by February 10th will benefit by attending a great educational event as part

of their membership this year. BTW we have also extended the Early Bird discount to Feb. 10 as well, so you will pay the lowest renewal rate. We have lined up nine of the best speakers in the industry. We have specifically found educators that can guide you in ways that will make your photography business grow. Not only that but we will have a truly great Image Competition this year, with 5 first class jurors (4 PPA Approved Jurors and 1 PPA Juror in training). The competition will be an all-day event held on Saturday, March 2nd. With the competition being held before the projected deadline for PPA District Competitions, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to see how your images will do at future PPA competitions in 2019. Please check out all the details of FocusNY on our www.ppsnys.com website. And of course the Sunday night party and the Banquet dinner are included as part of the package. What a Deal! Meanwhile, we are looking for volunteers to help at our convention so please contact our Convention Chairwoman, Barbara Bovat [email protected] if you can help.

Don’t forget about our 2019 Photo Imaging Workshop which is being held at the Hobart & William Smith College in Geneva, NY in the beautiful New York State Finger Lakes Wine region. This year, the Workshop is being held on July 28-August 2nd. We have four fantastic Photography educators coming to give us the best week of photography learning available in the Northeast US. Go to www.ppsnysworkshop.com to get more information on our instructors and class description. Our promotional pamphlet is avail-able now at your local section meetings. Look for it and sign up now to secure a place in the class you desire. And PPSNYS members get Workshop discounts too!

I am also pleased to announce that at our January 14th Council meeting we approved a new section to our Photographic Society. The Western New York section which is based in the Buffalo region, is now bringing in new members who are looking to learn all they can to turn their passion for photography into a sustainable and profitable business. Their new President, Emily Robinson sees a lot of growth potential for her new and dynamic section.

All Sections should be looking to organize a TEP (Talent Exchange Program) each year. PPSNYS will support the sections for an all-day (6.5 hour) TEP programs with a $200 contribution for a qualifying event. Since PPSNYS’ chief goal is to educate our members to be better photographers, TEP’s are important components of our mission.

Our Membership Chairs, Al & Elisa Knataitis have been able to compile lists of non-member photographers, who could become new members. Each of our sections should look for ways to find local photographers that need to learn all they can to improve their photographic skills with education and networking with other photographers. I thank Al & Elisa for the good work. It is important that we all realize that Membership is everyone’s job. Find a new member.

Hope to see you at FocusNY.

Sincerely,

Alan VollweilerPresident, PPSNYS

New Western Section! It is with great excitement that a new section in western NY has been established. The new section, Western New York, will cover the Greater Buffalo area and will be headed by its new President, Emily Robinson. The current Buffalo/Niagara Section still exists but has been dormant for a long time and it was thought that a new start would be a clean way forward.

With the approval of the Western Section, we have four new members of PPSNYS. Emily assures us that there is a great need for an organization like ours in her area, so we look forward to the addition of new members in the future.
