This two-part session will introduce the concept of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in respect to
the early childhood classroom.
In session one, participants will focus on understanding the framework of UDL and will be introduced
to the UDL learning principles: multiple means of representation, multiple means of action and
multiple means of engagement.
In session two the framework will provide educators with concepts that can be brought back to their
classrooms to provide responsive environments so that all children, regardless of ability, are able to
engage and play. Commitment to both sessions is required.

Christmas trees can still hold their magic even when the holiday is over. In this session, participants
will learn how to repurpose discarded Christmas trees as teaching tools. Let the creative juices flow,
from fort building to making giant bird feeders and transient art projects. The best part of using
repurposed trees is that these materials are free for the taking in early January. This workshop offers
great team-building, problem-solving and creative social-collaboration opportunities. Come join in
the fun! This session is outdoors, please dress accordingly and bring appropriate gloves that can be
discarded.

THRC welcomes Pierre Harrison! Pierre grew up in the vast forest of North Ontario, Canada. He
enjoyed a playful childhood filled with bumps and scrapes, wonder and adventure, and eventually
earned a B.Sc. in Biochemistry, M.Sc. in Protein Chemistry and B.Ed. Pierre launched
PLAYLearnThink in order to promote the importance of play as an essential stepping stone towards
a life of learning. Pierre is the current president of the Canadian branch of the International Play
Association.
Play is essential for the continued growth of adults. Join Pierre as we explore and play throughout
the day. Whether working as a group on a challenging task or experimenting with various materials,
the focus is always the use of play to nurture imagination and foster creativity. This leads to great
feats in problem solving and a heightened self-esteem.
Participants will play and create with a multitude of loose parts and tools. Get ready to plunge into
the joy of self-directed, spontaneous play and thus, feel first hand what children experience during
free play.

Creating Engaging Environments for Inquiry Based-Learning
Date/Time Tuesday, March 12, 2019 6:15pm - 7:45pm
Location Location to be confirmed
Cost No Cost
In this facilitated conversation educators in preschool rooms and nursery school programs will focus
on quality environments through implementing How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy in
the Early Years. You’ll have an opportunity to tour the preschool rooms and network with other
preschool educators about creating engaging environments for inquiry-based learning.
Facilitator: Jill Fortney, RECE, M.Ed., AECEO.C
How are you providing experiences that support healthy risk and challenges for young children? As
educators, we are aware of the need for children to take healthy risks, and the benefits and
challenges that go with it. When given the chance to engage freely in adventurous play they quickly
learn to assess their own skills and match them to the demands of the environment. How do we
provide environments that allow children to engage in risk-taking play that contributes to their
in-depth problem solving and critical thinking skills?
If this sparks your curiosity, join us in this three-part interactive series that will support your practice.
You will experience the joys and benefits of risky play, engage in dialogue and recognize how your
own attitudes may inhibit children’s opportunities for risk-taking, as well as challenge your own
thinking lens. Commitment to all three sessions is required.
Part One: What is Risk and no Risk?
Risky play as part of early education. Children are intrinsic risk-based learners and need
to experience risk to know how to manage it
Concepts of risky play and relationship of risk development
Hurdles, challenges and opportunities
Part Two: Play - What is it all about?
Play and engaging in risky play
Increase opportunities for children’s choices in risk-taking
Part Three: Making Connections
Children around the world in risky play situations
Play and interactive games
Strategies for implementing in your program.
