Audience: This workshop is suitable for educators, managers, teachers and principals, whilst having the ability to be adapted for parent sessions.

Workshop timeframe: This 2 hour workshop is available to be delivered at a time and venue that suits your needs.

The Risk of no Risk: Developing a risk-based program for children

For many of us, playing outside, usually in nature with NO adults in sight and taking

risks was an everyday part of childhood.

However, what we took for granted as children, has changed so dramatically that we now

have children spending more time indoors than any other time in history due to rapid

urbanisation, increased screen-time and a growing culture of risk aversion.

This workshop has been developed to provide adults with the opportunity to explore:

why children need to take risks

how to support risk taking in the OSHC, LDC, FDC, school or home environments

adventurous activities for children

adult’s role and responsibilities

developing a benefit risk assessment

strategies for bringing families, managers and educators on board

Audience: This workshop is suitable for educators working in LDC, OSHC and FDC.






Creating an Engaging Environment: Key ingredients for engaging children and families

‘Children are miracles. Believing that every child is a miracle can transform the way we

design for children’s care. When we invite a miracle into our lives, we prepare ourselves

and the environment around us. We may set out flowers or special offerings. We may

cleanse ourselves, the space, or our thoughts of everything but the love inside us. We make

it our job to create, with reverence and gratitude, a space that is worthy of a miracle! Action

This workshop allows participants to explore the key ingredients to creating an engaging

environment, before applying what they have learned into their own service setting,

focussing on the following:

how to provide a space that invites children and families to engage in, and contribute to

learning experiences

enhancing the learning environment through the use of natural resources

Reggio, Montessori and Steiner approaches to presenting engaging environments

exploring service settings through a series of photographs and videos

Exploring Nature: Developing a nature program for children

Early childhood professionals are in a privileged position to develop strategies for

re-connecting children to natural play spaces. When children engage in nature they are

happier, more relaxed, more independent and more inquisitive. They learn how to

recognise, assess and negotiate risk, building confidence and competence; all essential

skills for life.

This practical workshop will be delivered within a bush-land setting where participants will

be provided with resources that allow them to investigate and reflect upon the process of

providing children with a challenging and engaging nature based experiences from a benefit

risk approach.

Topics of focus include:

identifying challenges and solutions within the natural environment

risk v’s benefits to children’s learning

engaging and supporting children in adventurous play (earth, air, fire and water)

science, technology, engineering, art and maths (STEAM) in outdoor settings

connecting to the seasons

The Adult’s Role in Play: Examining how adults influence children’s play

As adults we can significantly affect children’s play. We can influence what children

experience through allowing permission to play. We control the time available for the

opportunity for children to play, we impact on how and if space is made available for play

and we provide or deny resources inductive to children’s play.

We often talk about play-based learning, but what does this look like in practice?

This workshop will include both practical and theoretical components exploring:

the importance of play

what role does the adult play?

identifying and exploring different forms of play

making time for play

supporting risk taking in play

promoting the value of learning through play to families and colleagues

Loose Parts Play: Supporting play through the use of loose parts

The best play comes from things that allow children to play in a variety of ways on

many different levels. Environments that include loose parts are infinitely more stimulating

and engaging than static ones. The play environment needs to promote and support

imaginative play through the provision of loose parts in a way that doesn’t direct play and

play opportunities, but allows children to interact with their environment in ways that

challenge and stretch them to develop their own abilities and ideas.

This workshop will includes both practical and theoretical components exploring:

what are loose parts and where can we source them?

how can loose parts enhance children’s play?

loose parts from a sustainability approach

promoting the value of loose parts to the broader community

Using Real Tools: A practical approach to using real tools with children

Many adults may hesitate at the thought of young children using real tools; hitting a nail

with a hammer or using a saw to cut down a piece of wood. But real tools provide children

with real life experiences that promote communication, coordination, fine and gross motor

development, self-regulation and self control.

This workshop will provide a range of tools and resources for educators and teachers to

explore, allowing individuals to build confidence and understanding around the use of real

tools with children of varying age groups.

This practical workshop explores:

how real tools enhance individual/group learning and development

what tools should we use and how do we use them safely and effectively?

projects to promote age appropriate experiences

supporting risk taking in play

It’s not Junk: Recycling, reimagining and repurposing

This engaging and practical session is based around the use of recycled and reused items

and the ways these can be used to promote creativity and sustainable practices within

education and care or school settings.

Participants will be actively involved in constructing a variety of projects utilising second

hand and repurposed resources, allowing them to explore the possibilities of potential

‘throw away’ items.

This practical workshop explores:

what type of materials can be utilised and where are these found?

how can these resources be applied to the indoor/outdoor environment?

creative uses for these items and where to find new ideas?

strategies for engaging children in creative experiences?

Reinventing the Resource Kit: Turning the ordinary into extraordinary

When working within the education and care sector we can often get bogged down with

new ideas to provide for children – this workshop aims to get you thinking outside the box,

working with others to explore innovative ways to provide resources for children.

Participants will engage in interactive activities designed to spark imagination, develop

collaborative thinking and explore opportunities to repurpose the ordinary into

extraordinary.

This practical workshop provides participants with the opportunity to:

work as a team and collaborate with like minded individuals

reflect on current resources in service setting and explore new uses/ideas

be playful, creative and have fun

explore where to find new and inspiring ideas to engage children of all ages

Outside School Hours Care (OSHC): Overview of workshops available

Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) is a complex and challenging space to be working in.

From the sites and location of services, the wide age group of children attending,

educators experience levels, sizes of programs and the list goes on.

When teams are working together, children are engaged within the program, being an

OSHC Educator or manager is a very rewarding and fulfilling role.

Scott has worked within this space for over 15 years, with experience as an educator,

co-ordinator and director of multiple OSHC programs and understands the complexities

this sector brings. Scott is able to provide programs, services, organisations and

individuals; customised training, coaching and mentoring in all areas of OSHC from entry

level to senior management including topics such as:

Scott brings more than 15 years education and care experience to the Gowrie Training &

Consultancy team, holding specialist knowledge and management expertise in Outside

School Hours Care.

Scott is a passionate advocate for risk based/adventurous play and has worked extensively

with thousands of children, providing experiences that allow them to build confidence,

competence and resilience; all essential skills for life. Throughout this time Scott has

encountered a wide range of perceptions from adults in regards to risk taking and has

developed key strategies for promoting the importance of risky play and developing skills

for adults/teams to build confidence in this area.

Another key focus area of Scott’s is reconnecting children and adults to the natural

environment through a practice-based approach. ‘We are so lucky in Tasmania to have

access to such a diverse range of natural spaces including parks, forests, beaches, rivers

and bush-land reserves. Allowing children the opportunity and time to play within these

spaces brings with it a multitude of benefits that foster children’s health, well-being and

overall development’.

Scott has presented workshops both nationally and internationally and is skilled in

designing and facilitating practice focused training and mentoring to educators, leaders,

managers and teachers in group, service-based and school contexts. His belief in

‘hands-on’ approaches to understanding and experiencing key learning concepts enables

participants to clearly see the possibilities.
