President’s Message

Welcome Chapter Members and Guests to the 2017 Professional Development Day! At home and on the job, it starts with us! It’s an exciting time for project managers as the profession grows, matures and adapts to our ever changing business environment. This annual event is a collaboration of many minds and hands across industry, government and academia. We hope that you will find each session inspiring, engaging and educational. So often we are asked to lead and manage work, resources, sponsors and time. I hope that the day that is ahead of you will help you be more successful in making that happen. There are three fabulous keynote speakers to address our theme of the day and a host of session speakers to address strategic, leadership and technical topics that we tackle daily. Before I close, I would like to thank the PDD team for their hard work and dedication to putting this conference together. Thank you for your support and please enjoy the day!

Mike Ryan, Entrepreneur Improvisation happens all the time in our projects. We don't know what will happen next until it happens. In Improvisation each scene begins with a suggestion from the audience. Performers start with that prompt and make up the story as it goes. Although they improvise, the process draws on the cornerstone of "Yes…And" meaning performers accepts whatever their partners do or say and then build on it with their own contributions. As project people we do much the same. We have to be present in the moment, listen carefully, and contribute freely. These skills turn out to be particularly useful on projects which need and rely on adaptability, which is every project.

Murali Varadarjan, CEO & Founder - SparkFX The buzz of 'Lean Startup' & murmurs on 'Design Thinking' and then the noise of confusing ‘Agile’ lingo… Seems like a perfect storm but there are things we need to learn from each and many things to unlearn from our own practices. While Design Thinking and Lean Startup grow with the practitioners and passionate, Agile sadly had its influencers pursue a path of certification and pyramid schemes creation which is bringing it down rapidly. What is then warranted ? Where are we slipping and how can we disrupt ourselves? Focus on Discovery ? Or Delivery ? Or Speed ? What really is the goal ?
