PROFAB

In 1998, Profab was launched on Batam Island, Indonesia, just a short hop by ferry from the

metropolis of Singapore, one of the busiest logistics hubs in the world – at the time, it was a small factory designing and fabricating pressure vessels for the oil and gas industry. Today the company has grown into a true global enterprise, headquartered in Singapore, and with its fabrication facilities spanning 140,000 sq. m., producing over 25,000 metric tons of products from pressure vessels and process skids to wellhead platforms and subsea equipment for major partners like ExxonMobil, Shell, ConocoPhillips, BP and more. With nearly two decades in the business, Profab is still ready to take its business even further. The Profab Difference What separates Profab from its competition? Much of it has to do with its dedication to the improvement of its facilities and the 2,000-plus individuals who keep those facilities in motion day after day. “Over the years, Profab has heavily invested in its people and

its facilities,” says Paul McFarlane, Group Business Development Manager at Profab. “We believe in maximizing the work we deliver in house, to ensure we have strong and effective control over the manufacturing process. In this way, we can ensure that the products we supply are delivered on time, with the highest regard for safety, and to international quality standards.”

It also has to do with the diversity of Profab’s offering, allowing its partners to find nearly everything they need in one place. “We give new meaning to the term ‘one stop shop,’ particularly with respect to modular construction,” says McFarlane. “The fabrication of equipment such as pressure vessels, pipe spooling, and structural fabrication can all be performed in the same facility, thus eliminating the typical interface risks that arise when various suppliers are used.”

This product line diversity requires itself an extensive array of specialized machinery. Each Profab employee is highly trained as a specialist with the appropriate machinery and skillset. By treating

Profab employees with respect and care toward their education and safety, the company is able to count on the best results possible. “Profab has always recognized the importance of its employees and the key role they play in our business,” says McFarlane. “This filters through all aspects of the company, particularly with a high focus on health and safety. We believe that if employees are happy in their work environment, they will perform their best – and the performance of every employee is a key to any company’s success.”

Expansion for Better Customer Service Expansion is a hallmark of a robust growing business, and Profab fits the description – after a thorough sitewide analysis to identify areas in which the company could improve, Profab has launched two brand new specialized workshops built to more efficiently and effectively serve its clients.

“We identified specific areas in our fabrication facility where we could refine and enhance our productivity, quality and timeliness of delivery, and these areas were in painting and component pre-fabrication – this analysis led us to building two

new workshops,” says McFarlane. “Our workshop No.7 is designed purely to make prefabricated components. We have installed Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machines such as plasma plate profiling machines, a beam and section profiling machine, and a pipe profiling and beveling machine. This prefabrication shop supports all our

product lines and plays a key role in manufacturing complex products which involve tubulars – products such as Jackets, stingers, and catwalks. The incorporation of these machines has significantly improved our productivity and throughput, as well as the quality of our product, through reduced dependence on human factors in manually marking

and cutting pipe, plate, and steel sections.”

With a brand new beam and girder assembly line, Workshop No. 7 also allows Profab to fabricate large beams and girders on-site instead of waiting for prefabricated supplies to arrive from elsewhere. “The efficiencies obtained from this, coupled with the low cost centre of

Indonesia, gives us the opportunity to pass savings to our customers and differentiates us from other competition within the region,” says McFarlane.

Meanwhile, the second new Profab facility focuses solely on painting with the help of new technology to improve both efficiencies and onsite safety. “Our

new painting facility includes two blast lines that enable us to blast and prime full plates and sections prior to assembly, thus reducing a lot of the manual blasting – and the associated occupational health and safety risks that go with it,” says McFarlane. “Our paint facility also includes isolated paint bays, which allows us to blast and paint jobs concurrently to avoid some of the bottle necks that often occur at the tail end of projects.” The Growth Continues With these expansions behind it, the plan for Profab’s future is continued steady growth and more facility expansions to come.

“We have seen steady growth of the business right from the early days, and we see plenty of opportunity in front of us to continue to grow and develop,” says McFarlane. “There are several options that we have investigated to ensure that we can continue to build on our Batam base, but we are also looking at how best to expand beyond Batam and service our global clients through a range of facilities.”

As Profab continues to diversify its product lines and grow its ability to assist its global partners, even more will look to Profab as their fabricator of choice.
