    Education and Research

    The Steve M. Slaby Award is the highest honor that our society awards.The award is given “. . . to an individual for his/her accomplishment, life achievement, and veryoutstanding, leading and influential stature in the Graphics Education field, especially at theinternational level . . . ”.

    The Award is named after Steve M. Slaby, Professor Emeritus at the Princeton University(1922 – 2008), who was an outstanding scholar in graphics science and a driving force in thespread and betterment of education and research in the field, and who by this best epitomizessuch an award.Let us first recognize those individuals who have received this distinguished award in the past:

    For the Award 2018, an international jury of ISGG members decided thatProf. Otto Röschel is the winner of the Steve Slaby Award 2018.

    Otto Röschel is a distinguished teacher and researcher with a broad field of geometric re-search topics, including technical applications. He has been full professor working at GrazUniversity of Technology since 1988. He has conducted many lecture courses in the fieldof geometry. He has supervised over 25 diploma theses as well as PhD theses and all fourformer PhD students of Otto Röschel are now active in geometry and graphics research andeducation.Otto Röschel has studied many different topics in geometry including Flexible polyhedra,Rational curves, surfaces and motions, Geometric Origami, Non-Euclidean geometry, includ-ing numerous publications. Otto Röschel has contributed to ISGG as a vice president forthe region Europe/Near East/Africa from 2009 to 2012, and as its president from 2013 to2016. Under his presidency, the society’s bylaws were thoroughly revised. He also providedgreat help to the organizers of the ICGG conferences.Otto Röschel’s contributions to geometry and graphics are of utmost importance to Aus-trian geometry and are highly appreciated by that community of scholars. (Over the years, hehas actively contributed to the development of Descriptive Geometry curricula for secondaryschools. Not only has he spent hours in workgroups and commissions, he has also publishedcommentary and elaborative explanations on curricula, developed exemplary assignment ex-ercises and presented his findings at local educational conferences.)And, last not least, Otto Röschel is always helpful and eager to share his experience andhis teaching material with others.On behalf of the Steve Slaby Award Committee,
