Why Jatropha curcas?
Jatropha curcas is a hardy oilseed bearing tree.Centre of Origin in Central America.Commonly used in tropical growing areas as a hedge and source of oil.Can tolerate drought spells.
A plant of many revenue opportunities – oil, power generation, animal feed and fertiliserStrong global demand for a sustainable energy product, will help countries/ industries meet climate treaty requirements.Jatropha curcas has high sustainability potential:
Can be mixed or intercropped alongside existing vegetables/grains, resulting in additional and balanced cash income for farmers.Potential GHG savings of up to 66%.
Jatropha curcas remains to be domesticated.

Global Update Jatropha curcas
Jatropha curcas has been planted in a number of different productions models in 25+ countries around the world
Currently 500.000 ha + of planting in the ground.Majority was planted with “grain’’ and not with ‘’seed’’ of selected varieties. The agronomy knowledge base starts to develop but needs refining on a region by region basis. This is normal at the stage of domistication of the crop.
First oil has been produced in different countries from 2-3 year old planting. Volumes expected to grow significantly in coming years but still relatively small volumes compared to regular plant derived commodity oils.
Oil has been used primarely locally as a diesel replacement in generators and has been used also in biodiesel and shipping/aviation fuel experiments.Meal is used locally as biomass or fertilizer.
A number of projects suffering under current economic crisis and the downturn in investment appetite.

Next Steps
Professional domestication of the crop in areas where it can perform. Move Jatropha from being a miracle crop to being a cash crop.Start to grow seed of selected varieties in correct adaptation zones.
Integration of the crop alongside existing cropping expertise. Move towards an integrated production of food, feed, fuel and fiber!
Further professionalization of the Jatropha industry.Capitalization of credible projects.Jatropha industry Association.
Value added in the chain by maximal exploitation of oil and by-product streams.Animal feed applicationsAviation Other by-product valorization.

D1 Oils Science Objectives6
Improve oil yield per hectare of Jatropha through agronomy and breeding.
Select and breed Jatropha cultivars adapted to different target growing areas.
Optimise oil quality for different end use markets.
Ensure maximised economic value from by-products – e.g. meal for animal feed, energy from biomass.

Jatropha curcas is not a miracle crop, but....
Like any crop cultivated to produce grain, Jatropha curcas also needs to be:
Cultivated in areas where it can perform.Grown from selected and performing genetics.Grown under good agricultural practise.
Jatropha can perform in a wide range of environments and needs relatively low water input.
Jatropha can be developed into a sustainable crop. GHG savings of up to 65%.
Jatropha is producing a number of anti-nutritional compounds making it unpallatable for animals to eat.

Jatropha curcas is not a miracle crop, but....
Professional Jatropha best practise guides and Jatropha crop calendars have been developed on a region by region basis.
Jatropha should be grown in areas where it can be profitable for farmers and become a cash crop. Crop suitability maps have been developed.
The first selected Jatropha cultivars have been released with a gain in yield of 25% +Better seed and seedling qualityHigher grain yield per haHigher oil content.

Jatropha as an energy crop
Jatropha produces several potential energy sources:
Oil (30-40% on grain weight basis). up to 2 tonnes per ha based on current genetics.
Jatropha husks and hulls.Jatropha meal after crushing.Jatropha prunings (woodships).
For every tonne of crude Jatropha Oils there will be:
1,25 tonne husks1 tonne hulls1 tonne seedcake

Jatropha curcas Oil
Jatropha curcas produce an oil fit for
Electricity generatorsEsterification into biodieselHydrocrackingAviation and Shipping fuels
Jatropha oil is fit for local use in tropical and subtropical countries with a high deficit for fossil fuel sources and can longer term become significant source of export revenues with surplus sales.

Jatropha curcas High Protein Meal
Based on a proprietary production process D1 Oils extracts from Jatropha curcas grains a protein meal with:
Effective removal of all anti nutirional compoundsHigh protein content (60%+).High digestible energy content.Excellent amino acid profile protein profile.Excellent in vitro digestibility profiles for ruminants and chickens.
Scale up and confirmative productivity trials remain to be done to confirm the meal as an high protein animal feed component.
CONCLUSIONS
Jatropha is not a miracle crop, but when farmed correctly it candeliver its high potential as a sustainable and economical industrial crop.
Jatropha curcas produces a very versatile oil with short term production economics better than rapeseed and with longer term potential similar to oil palm.
D1 Oils Plant Science has developed a proprietary process to extract high value protein meal from Jatropha grains with an potential added value per ha of 1000 USD +.
