PRODUCTION OF PLASTIC
• 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic have been
produced since 1950.
• Plastics production in Europe is
relatively stable, but is growing at a
rapid rate in other areas of the world.
• Basing on today growth level, the
International Energy Agency (2018)
predicts annual production of around
600 million tonnes by the middle of
the century,

PRODUCTION OF PLASTIC WASTE
World Bank estimated that of the 2 billion
tonnes of solid municipal waste produced
worldwide in 2016, in which 220 million
tonnes (around 12%) were plastic.
• 57 million tonnes are in Asia
• 45 million tonnes in Europe
• 35 million tonnes in North America
The input of small plastic particles, ‘the
unseen’, is estimated to be larger than the
visible and includes for example, abrasion
of paint, tyres, textiles, fishing nets, etc.

Total mismanaged
waste would more
than double:
2016: 91 million
tons/ year
2040: 239 million
tons/ year

What is the biodegradable materials ?
➢ Biodegradable materials are materials that can be
decomposed by the action of living organisms, usually
micro-organisms, into water, carbon dioxide, and
biomass.
BIODEGRADABLE MATERIAL
Biodegradable, compostable and Oxo-degradable!
Biodegradable is a solution to reduce the plastic waste and protect
the environment. Compostable is a part inside of Biodegradable.
To achieve Compostable certificate, products must be satisfied
some international condition like ASTM D6400, EN 13432. Oxo-
degradable products could cause harmful to environment by
releasing micro-plastics and had been disbanded in several
countries. 6

COMPOSTABLE
PRODUCTS
• Non-degradable: extremely long degradation time
(hundreds of years)
• Breaks down into microplastics which can pollute
the environment and contaminate the animal and
human food chains
Not completely degradable when exposed into the
nature, breaks down into microplastics which pollute
the environment and contaminate the animal and
human food chains
• Made from starch…, completely biodegradable
and no microplastic breakdown
• Compostable and completely biodegradable into
CO2, H2O and humus; no trace of microplastics left
