12 volt motors can be powered by batteries, solar power kit, plug-in transformer, or multi-motor power supply. Below are some considerations when planning for power.

Battery Tube ConsiderationsBattery power recommended for maximum of 10 shades for best battery performance.

Battery tubes are installed outside of the product and can be challenging to hide in some applications.

• For outside mounts, battery tubes can be installed above or to the side of the shade• For inside mounts, battery tubes are usually top-mounted (behind the headrail) between the shade

and the window; to mount the battery tubes, additional recessed space will be needed

Dual battery tubes are required on all shades (cellular, pleated, Roman, natural, layered, sheer, soft, roller, and solar shades) over 3,600 square inches (23,225.8 cm2) to extend battery life. Dual battery tubes include an off set Y harness, 11" (28 cm) and 271⁄4" (69.3 cm) cable lengths.

Battery Tube Dimensions: 18" (45.8 cm) x 11⁄8" (2.9 cm)Dual Battery Tube Dimensions: 18" (45.8 cm) x 21⁄4" (5.8 cm) (installed side-by-side)

NOTE: For best performance, use only AA lithium batteries.

Solar Power Kit ConsiderationsThe solar panel mounts indoors directly to the glass with included adhesive strips or using provided mounting brackets. Verify window is unobstructed to sunlight by vegetation, decorative grills, or bug screens. Window construction can be non-tinted, single or double pane, which have a minimum of 65% light transmission for proper solar charging.

Kit Includes: Solar panel, battery tube and 10 AA NiMH rechargeable batteries, Y harness, battery tube clips, solar panel mounting brackets, glass-mount adhesive strips, alcohol wipe, and instructions.

• For outside mounts, battery tube can be installed above or to the side of the shade and the solar panel can be installed directly against the window within reach of the wire harness (approximately 10" (25.4 cm) Y harness)

• For inside mounts, battery tube and solar panel can be top-mounted (behind the headrail) or to the side of the shade (vertical orientation) between the shade and the window; additional recessed space will be needed

About Your Motorized ShadeMotorized shades offer a convenient solution to everyday challenges. They provide instant privacy, glare reduction and eliminate the need to manually adjust shades. Motorized shades also eliminate dangerous cords and create a comfortable and energy efficient environment. What’s more is that you will get more enjoyment from your home because motorized control of your shades is so effortless and features Radio Technology Somfy® (RTS). RTS is omnidirectional and operates within a range of 65 feet, which eliminates the need to point or aim the remote at the motorized shades. RTS also offers a wide range of controls and accessories that are designed to work together, so you can always mix and match to create the perfect setting. Explore the information within this guide to make the most of your motorized shades and learn about other control accessories available.

The term ‘shade’ will be used throughout this manual to refer to your motorized window covering, either a motorized blind or shade.

NOTE: Motorized Horizontal Blinds have motorized tilt for the slats only. Raising and lowering the blinds is manual with cord lift.

Single or dual reloadable battery tubes

Each tube requires 8 AA Lithium batteries. Dual tubes are required on all shades (cellular, pleated, solar, roller, soft and woven wood) greater than 3600 sq. in. to extend battery life (excludes horizontal blinds). Dual battery tubes include an offset Y harness for installation (11" and 271/4" cable lengths).

Battery tube installation considerations

Single battery tube dimensions: 18" x 1¼"

Dual battery tube dimensions:

• 18" x 2¼" when mounted side-by-side

• 36" x 1¼" when mounted end-to-end

Battery tubes are installed outside of the window covering

For outside mounts, tubes can be installed above or to the side of the shade.

For inside mounts, tubes are usually top mounted (behind the headrail)

between the shade and the window; to mount the tubes, additional space will be needed.

Solar power kit

Each kit includes Solar Panel, battery tube and 10 AA NiMH rechargeable batteries, Y harness, battery tube clips, solar panel mounting brackets, glass-mount adhesive strips, alcohol wipes, and instructions.

NOTE: It is important for the batteries to have a full charge before operation of the blind or shade to maximize battery life and ensure proper operation. The batteries are fully charged at the time of shade fabrication and should be installed within a week of fabrication. If installation is delayed, place solar panel with fi lled battery tube in a location that gets periodic sun to keep it charged. Rechargeable NiMH battery charger can be used prior to installation to top off batteries.

Plug-in 12-volt and 24-volt transformers

Eliminate the need to replace batteries with a plug-in transformer. Plan to hide cord behind window treatment or along window casement.

12-volt: 6 ft. power cord + 8 ft. extension

24-volt: 5 ft. removable motor lead and + 8 ft. extension,

cord can be cut to length

Multiple-shade, 12-volt, and 24-volt power supply

Batteries or transformer?

Batteries offer the ability to hide the power more easily than a cord and transformer in many

cases. However, batteries need to be changed periodically, so consider ease of access and

the expense of 8-16 lithium batteries every year or two for each shade. Extension cables are

available (48" and 96") to help installation.

Plug-in transformers are a one-time cost and eliminate the need for accessing a battery tube for

periodic changes. If you have a means of hiding the wire and transformer (e.g., behind a curtain),

transformers are generally the better choice. Recommending a total window solution (which

includes side panels, top treatments, etc.) provides an excellent means of hiding the wire.

A solar panel with rechargeable batteries is arguably the best alternative. This option offers

long periods between battery changes, environmental friendliness, and easy concealment

in most cases. Refer to Solar Power Kit instructions for install parameters and performance

specifi cations.

Multi-motor power supplies are used when wires can be hidden behind walls or ceilings,

known as "direct-wired." Great for new construction projects or remodels.

Home Automation Integration

The home automation landscape is changing rapidly. There are many

low-cost systems being introduced that feature complete wireless control

for a home's many products and systems. Graber motorized window

coverings, powered by Somfy motors, are the perfect addition to these

systems. Numerous interface devices we offer can be added to new or

existing motorized window coverings and integrate seamlessly with home

automation systems.

More information on integration devices can be found in the Motorization

Product Guide on swfconnect.com.

3. INSTAllATIoN3.1 determine location of Solar Panel

The solar panel must always be installed indoors, directly against the window glass so as to allow as much natural light as possible to reach the panel.

Caution! Never install the solar panel on any window glass allowing less than 65% light transmission (including Low E glass and/or window tinting), or obstructed by a window pane or bug screen.

Always leave the photovoltaic cells unobstructed, do not put anything in front of them.

The three components which make up the Solar Pack must be installed on the same side as the WireFree™ motor.

Somfy recommends that all components be fitted systematically in order that all components may be connected to the wire harness easily, and that the wire harness does not interfere with the free movement of the interior window covering.

Please Refer to the Solar Pack Performance Tables Section 8.0 to confirm proper usage per blind and window orientation.

3.2 Mounting the Solar Panel.

Caution! It is imperative that window hardware or framing does not collide with the solar panel!

Careful! Do not damage the wire harness cables during installation.

Determined the position of the solar panel (against window, within reach of wire harness) prior to application of 2-sided tape to insure proper adhesion the first time.

3.2.1 Glass Mounting

Caution! To insure a secure adhesive hold over a long period, prepare the inside window glass prior to mounting the solar panel.

Important! The adhesive tape should never be touched directly with fingers (or other contaminates) prior to adhesion.

1) Clean solar panel bezel corners and window area with alcohol prep pad. Let dry for two minutes.

2) On a table, with the solar panel facing up, apply the 2-sided adhesive to four corners of the solar panel bezel.

Note: The tape is precut for your convenience in between the top (facer) and bottom (backer) liners. With your fingers, lift off each precut adhesive piece so that it remains attached to the “facer” material and the opposite side of the tape should then be released from the back liner. See Photo in Figure 1 and Figure 2.

3) Remove the “facers” of the applied adhesive.Position the bezel with solar panel facing to outdoors , then press entire panel with firm, even pressure into the glass for 10- 15 seconds. The panel is now supported by the adhesive to glass bond but will require 24 hours of cure time to allow full strength characteristics. Do not disturb during this period.

6. PRoduCT IN uSE6.1 Normal operationAfter commissioning, the battery is trickle-charged by electrical energy generated by the solar panel. The energy is stored in the high capacity NiMH battery (acting like a reservoir) and the system provides uninterrupted service through many climatic seasons. It is normal for the battery to gain more energy in summer as compared to winter – the Solar Panel converts the intensity of light to energy upon availability.

6.2 Excessive Energy UseCaution! If daily motor activations exceed recommended cycles per day as stated in the Solar Pack Performance Chart, the solar panel will not be able to “replenish” the battery as designed.

If the motorized shade does not operate due to an excessively diminished battery, the battery may require a full recharge. This may be done with a Somfy Solar Pack Charger (#9018620). If the battery no longer provides adequate power to operate your motor, new NiMH batteries should be installed in the battery tube. There is no need to replace any other Solar Pack components.
