Why do you need an UPS?

• Common power problems• Complete Power Failure – Total loss of utility power• Transient Voltage Sag/Spike – Short-term Under/Over-voltage• Brown-out – Long-term Under-voltage• Line-noise – Electro-magnetic interference• Frequency variation• Switching transient – Instantaneous under-voltage• Harmonic Distortion – Multiples of power frequency imposed on power

waveform (think ‘echo’)• “Utility power” for you and me means consistently clean, reliable and grounded

electricity from your regional electrical-utility company (Dominion Power, e.g..)• “Utility power” for a sailor, marine, or solider, usually means dirty, unreliable, and

often ungrounded electricity from a field-generator, fueled by diesel gasoline.

Who We AreWhere We Are

Standard Portfolio Features

• Power products function as both power conditioners and battery backup power• Double-conversion technology converts AC input power to a DC bus and then

generates a custom AC output waveform (defn. “online”)• Will accept wide input voltage range

before going to battery backup• Provides uninterrupted output

power regardless of input voltage

• Ungrounded delta input power is galvanically-isolated providing grounded wye output power

• Power Factor Corrected to near unity on input, thereby eliminating harmful load harmonics

Power Supply Limits – Battery Runtime

• Backup runtime directly related to battery capacity• Industry standard for as long as there have been UPS’s:

Valve Regulated Lead Acid / Sealed Lead Acid

• Disadvantages:• Poor energy density• Bulky size and weight

• Advantages• Ideal for long-term, stand-by use:

• Slower self-discharge rates • Float charge without voltage depression (ie. “memory”)

• Intrinsically safer than Lithium Ion

Type Energy/Weight Energy/Volume Self-discharge rate

VRLA 30-40 Wh/kg 60-75 Wh/L 3%/mo

NiCd 40-60 Wh/kg 50-150 Wh/L 10%/mo

NiMh 30-80 Wh/kg 140-300 Wh/L 30%/mo

Li Ion 150-200 Wh/kg 250-530 Wh/L 5-10%/mo
