336The AGD336 is a compact FMCW low power digital radar which operates in the K-Band 24GHz. The radar processing consumes approximately 150mW whilst maintaining an active GPRS connection and radar update rate of 16Hz. The power can be reduced further by increasing the period between GPRS events. Configuration of operational parameters is via an GPRS Modem. Detect output is via a XML packet structure over GPRS Modem.

QUICKSTART GUIDE

1 CONNECTING POWER

Connect the red wire from the 336 to the positive DC supply. The blue wire should be connected to the negative of this same supply. Once powered, the 336 front and rear LED should flash for approximately 2-3 minutes as the 336 registers onto the GPRS network.The flash rate changes as it goes through the different stages 6V/12V Power supply AGD336

2 INSTALLING THE RADAR DIAGNOSTICS SOFTWARE

Download and install the Radar Diagnostic Software from www.agd-systems.com/downloads or from the 336 Trial Kit CD.Install the Software following the on screen instructions.Launch the program by clicking the new desktop icon.When prompted, select the AGD336 button

INSTALLATION

MOUNTING HEIGHT, ANGLES, CLEARANCE

The radar should be mounted on a firm structure. The radar should point down and accross the highway at 20 degrees to the direction of traffic flow. The front face of the radar should be pointing at the base of the central reservation. The radar has a relatively narrow azimuth field of view of 12 degrees. Within this angle the target vehicles should be visible at the greatest detection distance.For optimum performance the radar should be situated on the nearside of the carriageway with an unobstructed view of receding traffic.

INSTALLATION

TYPICAL INSTALLATION

Items required• Compass. • Banding kit. • Solar panel, radar plus bracket, battery, battery box plus fixing kit and M8 security tool provided.

Installation Sequence1. Fit the solar panel sleeve over the top of the pole (It may be necessary to lower the sign slightly). Face the solar panel towards the south and secure the panel using the M8 security bolts provided. Cap the bolt heads with the bungs provided.

2. Fit the radar mounting bracket provided at a height of approximately 3m using a banding strap. Fit the radar to the bracket and align the radar so that it is angled down and across the carriageway at 20°. The front face of the radar should be pointing at the base of the central reservation.

3. Fit the banding clips provided to the channel of the battery box. Feed the cables through the holes in the battery box and fit the grommets to the box and fit the box to the pole using banding straps. Tighten the banding straps and connect the radar and solar panel to the terminals clearly marked in the box. Fit the battery provided and close and secure the box lid using the M8 anti-vandal bolts provided. Secure the cables to the pole using cable ties as required.

GPRS CONNECTIVITY

TERMINAL WALKTHROUGH

This guide demonstrates the configuration of a typical Terminal application, Tera Term 4.73 for Windows 95/NT (onwards). This is a licence-free serial communication program available from http://www.agd-systems.com/teratermThe steps below assume that Tera Term has been installed following the onscreen prompts.

1. SETUP TERMINAL

Launch Tera Term and find the menu option to configure the Terminal Interface.

Setup your system as per screen shot. This will enable Local Echo so commands typed can be seen in the terminal window.

This setup can be saved as the default for Tera Term to use.

GPRS CONNECTIVITY

2. SETUP CONNECTION

Find the menu option to create a new connection.

Enter the IP address of the radar unit and the port number as 53862. Select the service as Telnet.

3. TEST CONNECTION

Test the connection by typing AGD & pressing the <Enter> key. The detector will respond with model & version details. If not, check communication & power cables and ensure Tera Term is configured correctly from the previous steps.

COMMAND STRUCTURE

The Radar features user-adjustable Parameters to change the way it operates. These are accessed through Commands, sent via the GPRS Connection.

Most commands start with an Asterisk (*).

The radar shows responses to commands using a Hash (#) prefix.

Commands must be terminated with a carriage return character (<CR>), typically sent when using the <Enter> key.

The Radar will send a <CR> (carriage return) at the end of a message. COMMAND TYPES

There are 3 basic “Types” of commands, refelecting the number of ways to interact with a Parameter:

3. QUERYING THE SERVER IP ADDRESS

Send *SERV? to the unit prompts it to respond with the current IP address it will use to communicate with the server.

4. CHANGE THE SERVER IP ADDRESS

Send *SERV= to change the server IP address. If successful it will respond with the new setting.

5. STORE UNIT SETTINGS

Once operating as required, Parameter values must be committed using the *STORE! command. This Actions the Radar to save all Parameters. They will then be still available after a reboot/power-failure.

6. SET ALL PARAMETERS TO THEIR FACTORY DEFAULTS

The *INIT! command actions the radar to restore each parameters to its factory default.

AGD<CR>This command will respond with the product type and current firmware version.

*BAT?<CR>This command will report the number of millivolts being applied to the unit.

*DISCO!<CR>This command will make the GPRS modem disconnect and make sure the unit is ready for a new connection in the future.

*DT?<CR> and *DT=n<CR>This command will enquire or set the current value for the detection threshold when a target is seen. For example *DT? to enquire the value and *DT=4 to set the value. (This command can be thought of as range).

*ENV?<CR> and *ENV=n<CR>This command will enquire or set the time period in seconds for checking and reporting the detector’s environment. This includes the temperature, voltage, radar control and GPRS signal quality. For example *ENV? to enquire the value and *ENV=900 to set the value. (The more frequent the higher the current consumption).

*FR?<CR> and *FR=n<CR>This command will enquire or set the frame rate of the Radar. (Frame rate in Hertz is the number of times the radar’s antenna turns on over a period of time to view target information, the greater the frequency the higher the current consumption) For example *FR? to enquire the value and *FR=12 to set the value.

*HEART?<CR> and *HEART=n<CR>This command will enquire or set the time period in seconds for adding a heartbeat message to the GPRS data message. (The more frequent the higher the current consumption). For example *HEART? to enquire the value and *HEART=3600 to set the value.

*SU?<CR> and *SU=a<CR>This command will enquire or set the speed units. This will either be M for mph (miles per hour) or K for kph (kilometres per hour). For example *SU? to enquire the type and *SU=M to set the type.

*TEMP?<CR>This command will respond with the current temperature in degrees Celcius within the detector. The sign is always reported.

*TH?<CR> and *TH=n<CR>This command will enquire or set the number of tracking hits the Detector checks for to confirm a vechicle travelling. For example *TH? to enquire the value and *TH=5 to set the value.

*TIME?<CR>This command will report the current time of the detector. The time will be set by the communications with the server. 21 is hour, 04 is minute, 35 is second, 01 is day, 09 is month, 2012 is Year.

*VER?<CR>The AGD336 will respond with the product type and current firmware version.

HELP

TROUBLESHOOTING

I don’t see a flashing LED when connecting power1. Make sure the unit is wired correctly and power supply is set to the correct voltage, & powered on.2. If a fuse or current limiter is fitted, ensure this is working correctly or set to an adequate value.

I have checked the above & still do not see a flashing LEDIt is possible that you may have a faulty unit & it will need to be returned to AGD for inspection.

My unit does not appear to respond to commandsCheck that the LED flashes when powering on and then wait for the LED to stop flashing.

My unit is powered on but will not respond to commands1. Check the password has been entered. It will accept the AGD command without a password.2. Make sure the detector is connected to a smooth DC power supply.Connection to noisy supplies can result in transmission being blocked.3. Make sure the detector is placed in a good area for GPRS reception.

My unit won’t detect vehicles1. If you are monitoring the LED for detection confirmation you may need to increase the brightness to suit conditions (via the *LD command).2. Check the Detection Threshold setting (*DT) , if the value is low increase sensitivity as required.3. Make sure the vehicles are within the tracking limits set by the commands *LST and *HST.

Occasional targets are dropped1. Check the mounting height & alignment.2. Refer to the Command List to determine current radar parameter settings. Adjust as necessary to suit site topography and operating conditions.

GPRSGPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service. It allows 2G, 3G and WCDMA mobile networks to transmit IP packets to external networks such as the internet. The GPRS system is an integrated part of the GSM network switching subsystem.

Hyperion™ is a bespoke set of test equipment designed and developed by AGD Systems. It is dedicated to the testing of the AGD portfolio of ‘ranging’ FMCW vehicle radars. 100% of the 336 units manufactured at AGD are Certified by Hyperion.

The radar test sequences performed by Hyperion on the radar under test provides a thorough examination of the performance of the 336 radar and specifically the ranging measurement capability provided by the FMCW technology deployed. This gives full control of simulated targets’ signal size, speed, direction and range.

Verification of GPRS communication to the detector is verified during the test cycle.

Optimisation of frequency signals on Hyperion ensures full compatibility with country requirements within the 24GHz radar operating band.

LIFETIME PRODUCT TRACEABILITY There are clearly defined pass and fail criteria at all stages within the Hyperion test process. The test results in association with the product build revision are recorded on a product serial number basis. The full suite of test measurements is instantly sent to the dedicated product database within the AGD secure server facility, providing full traceability during the product lifetime.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

All work must be performed in accordance with company working practices, in-line with adequate risk assessments. Only skilled and instructed persons should carry out work with the product. Experience and safety procedures in the following areas may be relevant:

• Working with mains power • Working with modern electronic/electrical equipment • Working at height • Working at the roadside or highways

1. This product is compliant to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS - European Union directive 2011/65/EU).

2. Should the product feature user-accessible switches, an access port will be provided. Only the specified access port should be used to access switches. Only non-conductive tools are to be used when operating switches.

3. The product must be correctly connected to the specified power supply. All connections must be made whilst the power supply is off or suitably isolated. Safety must take always take precedence and power must only be applied when deemed safe to do so.

4. No user-maintainable parts are contained within the product. Removing or opening the outer casing is deemed dangerous and will void all warranties.

5. Under no circumstances should a product suspected of damage be powered on. Internal damage may be suggested by unusual behaviour, an unusual odour or damage to the outer casing. Please contact AGD for further advice.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

LOW POWER NON-IONISING RADIO TRANSMISSION AND SAFETY

Concern has been expressed in some quarters that low power Radio Frequency transmission may constitute a health hazard. The transmission characteristics of low power radio devices is a highly regulated environment for the assurance of safe use.

There are strict limits on continuous emission power levels and these are reflected in the testing specifications that the products are approved to. These Type Approval limits are reflected in the product specifications required for a typical geographic area such as those for the EU (ETS300:440), for the USA (FCC part 15c) and for Australia/New Zealand (AS/NZS 4268). The limits adopted in these specifications are typically replicated in many other localized specifications.

The level of safe human exposure to radio transmission is given by the generally accepted guidelines issued by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). This body has issued guidance for limiting exposure to time-varying electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields (up to 300 GHz) which are quoted below.

Note 2 Other equivalent limits include; Medical Research Council Limit of 10mW/cm2, IACP limit of 5mW/cm2 (at 5cm) and UK CAST limit of 5mW/cm2

Note 3 Calculation is made on the assumption antenna is a point source therefore the actual value is likely to be significantly less than that quoted. Note that a theoretical max level at a 5cm distance (which gives 0.318mW/cm2) is at a point in the field where the radar beam is not properly formed.

From the table it can be seen that it is extremely unlikely that a potentially hazardous situation could occur owing to the use of such low power devices.

It is considered to be good practice not to subject humans to radiation levels higher than is necessary. In a works environment where multiple equipment on soak test are to be encountered then it is considered good practice to contain the equipment in an appropriate enclosure lined with radar absorbing material.
