1 Introduction

1.2 Cautions and Warnings

Please read this manual carefully. If you are unclear on any point DO NOT proceed. Contact the manufacturer or supplier for clarification and guidance.

Only Trained service personnel should undertake the Installation, Programming and Maintenance of this equipment.

This product has been designed to comply with the requirements of the Low Voltage Safety and the EMC Directives. Failure to follow the installation instructions may compromise its adherence to these standards.

ATTENTION OBSERVE PRECAUTIONS

SENSITIVE DEVICES

This equipment is constructed with static sensitive components. Observe anti-static precautions at all times when handling printed circuit boards. Wear an anti-static earth strap connected to panel enclosure earth point. Before installing or removing any printed circuit boards remove all sources of power (mains and battery).

1.3 Description This manual covers the installation, programming, commissioning and use of the Lx-9400 Addressable Emergency Lighting Control Panel. Additionally, a User Guide (Document No. 680-070) is also available.

The Lx-9400 is a Multiple Loop, Addressable Emergency Lighting Control Panel with provision for up to four signalling loops and is designed for use with Emergency Light Luminaires equipped with the Advanced Electronics Pulse addressing and monitor PLU module.

The Lx-9800 is a Multiple Loop, Addressable Emergency Lighting Control Panel with provision for up to eight signalling loops and is designed for use with Emergency Light Luminaires equipped with the Advanced Electronics Pulse addressing and monitor PLU module

Install the panel, signalling loops, monitored output circuits, etc. in accordance with the instructions in Section 2 and then program the operation in accordance with the instructions detailed in Section 4. User operation is described in Section 3.

1.3.1 System Features

The Lux Intelligent system provides real-time monitoring and automatic testing of emergency lighting. It is designed to satisfy the requirements of BS5266 part 1 and prEN50172 standards for emergency lighting systems.

Each Lux Intelligent control panel supports maintained, non-maintained and slave luminaires in either self-contained central battery or static inverter systems.

The control panel electronics are housed in a high quality steel enclosure with sealed front label protecting the control keys, LED Indicators and liquid crystal display. The graphic display is backlit to improve visibility in poor ambient light conditions.

The system is modular in construction. For small systems, a single line driver is used to connect up to 249 Pulse Line Unit (PLU) addressable luminaires or I/O modules over a 2-core cable. Each line driver takes the form of a small, plug-in circuit card and each panel can control up to 4 line drivers. Further expansion is easily achieved by networking up to 200 Lux Intelligent panels.

The installation may be divided up into a maximum of 200 Zones (1000 Zones when networked) to correspond with the building fire zones, with each luminaire capable of being identified by its zone description and individual location description. In addition, the installation may be divided up into 50 Test Groups, per panel, for automatic or manual testing, thereby permitting the testing of alternate luminaires within a zone.

A User-friendly, menu driven software is used to assist in commissioning systems and for general operation of the panel. Once luminaires are connected to the panel, a simple ‘Learn’ procedure is run to quickly identify the quantity and types connected on each line.

Automatic testing can be carried out at any time of day or night. Flexible programming allows the time, date and duration of test for multiple groups of lights to be quickly specified, with up to 400 unique time / date / periods per year. The panels can be fully on site programmed using the front panel alphanumeric keypad. Alternatively, the panel programming may be configured from a PC via the isolated RS232 serial port.

Alternatively, the data can be transferred to a database on a central PC for subsequent analysis, listing and printing.

Remote monitoring is also possible via an internal modem option or using a serial to Ethernet converter. Software running on a remote PC can be set to periodically dial into each panel and check for any faults. Again proof of all tests carried out on each luminaire, showing the time, date and duration of each test can be automatically printed from the PC.

An internal (or external) printer can be fitted to print the test results, etc. where the PC logging system is not required.

1.3.2 Luminaire Control / Monitor Modules

The control panel is compatible with all Pulse Line Units. Models: Lxp-302, Lxp-304 Light Only, Lxp-110 I/O and Lxp-111 AC Current to Light Converter.

The control panel is also compatible with the AEL-302 (luminaire powered) control / monitor module.

For full information on each module, refer to document 680-075. The salient features of each module are as follows:

1.3.2.1 Lxp-302 Control / Monitor Module The Pulse Line Unit is a device which checks for correct light levels, AC and battery power and provides the following major features:

Self (Soft) Addressing – No DIL Switches to set in the luminaire fitting

Removal of double addressing at the panel – no need to go to luminaire

Loop powered so does not affect the luminaire battery supply

AC Mains sensing and control

Real-time Analogue Light Level Monitoring (via a unique fibre-optic sensor) available at the panel

1.3.2.2 Lxp-304 Light Monitor Module The Pulse Light Only Line Unit is a device which checks for correct light levels, but does not monitor a battery or AC supply and provides the following major features:

Self (Soft) Addressing – No DIL Switches to set in the luminaire fitting

Removal of double addressing at the panel – no need to go to luminaire

Loop powered so does not affect the luminaire battery supply

Real-time Analogue Light Level Monitoring (via a unique fibre-optic sensor) available at the panel

1.3.2.3 Lxp-110 I/O Control Module The Pulse Input/Output Line Unit is available to support central battery systems, or any other situation in which additional loop powered inputs or outputs are required and provides the following major features:

Self (Soft) Addressing – No DIL Switches to set in the luminaire fitting

Removal of double addressing at the panel – no need to go to luminaire

Loop powered

Output Relay to control the central battery / static inverter luminaire test operation

Input for monitoring of Alarms or Warnings

1.3.2.4 Lxp-111 AC Current to Light Converter The Pulse Line Unit provides the following major features:

AC powered so does not affect the luminaire battery supply

Senses current drawn by the lamp and converts to a light output for monitoring via the Lxp-302 or Lxp-

304 modules.

Suitable for applications where it is not possible / convenient to monitor the actual light – e.g. tungsten

lamps.

1.4 Installation Approvals

1.4.1 Emergency Lighting Installations

The panel must be installed and configured for operation in accordance with these instructions and the

applicable code of practice or national standard regulations for emergency lighting systems installation

appropriate to the country and location of the installation.

1.4.2 Wiring Regulations

The panel and system must be installed in accordance with these instructions and the applicable wiring codes

and regulations appropriate to the country and location of the installation.

Insulation coordination for equipment within low voltage systems:

The normal category for fire detection and fire alarm products (and associated equipment) is as permanently connected equipment supplied from the building wiring (Overvoltage Category II). The equipment is not classified as being an integral part of the building wiring (Overvoltage Category III).

In accordance with EN60950-1, the products are assessed to, and comply with, the requirements for Overvoltage Category II devices for connection to the AC Mains supply.

This category is the normal category for this type of equipment and installation and the use of additional surge protection devices (SPD) is not normally required.

However:

- If the equipment is subjected to special requirements with regard to reliability and availability, or

- If the equipment is likely, when installed, to be subjected to transient over-voltages that exceed Category II, then

Additional surge protection devices (SPD) shall be provided in the AC Mains Supply feed to the equipment to limit any overvoltage transients to the levels of Category II.

2 Installation

2.1 Identification of Parts

The diagram opposite shows the major parts of the panel.

2.2 Installing the Lx-9400 Enclosure

The panel can weigh in excess of 20kg when the batteries are installed. Use the appropriate fixing hardware necessary to secure the panel to the wall. Observe recommended lifting practices to guard against spinal injury.

2.2.1 Opening the Enclosure Cover

The Lx-9400 is provided with a captive screw fixing for securing the hinged door to the back box.

The Lx-9400/D and Lx-9800 are provided with key-lock assemblies for securing the hinged door to the back

box. Insert and turn the key to open the enclosure.

2.2.2 Removing the Chassis

It is recommended that the chassis be removed before fitting the panel to the wall. To remove the chassis:

Refer to the diagram opposite.

Disconnect the earth cable connecting the chassis to the spade terminal on the rear enclosure.

Remove the bottom two screws holding the chassis to the back box. Keep these items in a safe place for later re-use.

Loosen the top two screws holding the chassis to the back box via the keyhole slots. The chassis assembly can now be removed.

Carefully remove the chassis from the rear enclosure and place in a safe place to prevent accidental damage.

Do not lift the chassis by holding onto any of the printed circuit cards. Hold the chassis by the metal plate only.

2.2.3 Mounting the Enclosure

Firstly, remove the required knockouts for the installation wiring. There are sufficient knockouts on the top of the enclosure for all installation wiring. In addition, there are knockouts at the top of the back wall, if required, for rear entry cabling.

The diagram opposite shows the positions of the four holes. Use all four positions to ensure the panel is held securely to the wall.

Drill the required holes in the supporting wall using a drill bit diameter 7.0 mm and plug with a suitable 40mm long expansion plug. Affix the panel to the wall with M5 screws (length 40mm) or No.10 screws (length 1½”).

Ensure that there is sufficient space to allow the door to be opened when the panel is mounted.

Finally, use a brush to remove any dust or swarf from inside the enclosure.

2.2.4 Remounting the Chassis

Carefully replace the chassis and locate onto the upper two screws. Replace the bottom two screws and tighten all four screws to hold the chassis securely to the back box.

Reconnect the chassis earth cable to the spade terminal in the rear of the enclosure.

2.2.5 Recommended Cable Routing Arrangement

It is recommended that the routing arrangement shown in the diagrams opposite be employed.

Segregate the SELV low voltage wiring (Loop Circuit, Network and AUX Supply) from the AC Mains Wiring and any wiring connected to the relay contacts and modem telephone connection lead.

Eyelets are provided in the rear of the back box to enable the cables to be securely fastened using tie-wraps.

Cable screens / shields should be connected to the back box using the threaded studs provided near the knockout holes. Multi-way Bus bars are available separately for mounting on the threaded studs.

2.2.6.1 Additional Signalling Line Circuits To extend the number of signalling line circuits / loops or to replace an existing loop driver card (Lxp-901) follow the procedure described below.

An example of the loop driver is shown opposite. This is provided with a plastic grip handle on the top edge to ease removal of the card from the Base Card.

Open the enclosure and then open the display plate (it is hinged on the right hand side and there is a magnetic catch strip on the left-hand side) to gain access to the Base Card.

A section of the Base Card identifying the locations for each loop driver is shown in the picture opposite.

Loop Driver – Component Side View

To install a loop driver, remove the retaining strap, then gently guide the loop driver printed circuit card into the guide slots of the machined end blocks and then push into place onto the connector on the Base Card.

Ensure that the pins of the connectors are correctly aligned. The loop driver should be inserted with the component side of the board placed on the left-hand side. Replace the retaining strap.

The Base Card can accept up to four signalling line driver cards – it does not matter which positions are used. Ensure that the signalling line wiring is made to the terminal block positions appropriate to the line driver cards actually installed.

Close the chassis display plate and then close up the enclosure.

2.2.6.2 Removing a Loop Driver Card To remove a loop driver, remove all power and follow the procedure above but:

Take a firm hold of the lever located on top of the loop driver card. Gradually and carefully pull the loop driver vertically away from the base card and guide it out of the slots in the machined end blocks.

Replace with the replacement card as described above.

2.2.6.3 Integral Modem Option The modem card option may be supplied factory installed when the control panel is ordered. It is mounted on the chassis plate, on pre-installed pillars, to the left of the base card. 4x M3 Screws are used to secure the card to the chassis.

The card requires power from the AUX 24V DC output on the base card. Take care to ensure that the wires are connected AUX 0V to 0V input and AUX V+ to +24V input.

The RS232 connections should be connected:

The phone cable should be routed through a gland using one of the 20mm knockouts. Route the cable away from LV Mains and SELV wiring.

2.2.6.4 Integral Network Option Cards The network card may be supplied factory installed when the control panel is ordered.

The card is mounted on the chassis plate, on pre-installed pillars, to the right of the base card. There are three snap-in pillars. The card is secured to the chassis with an M3 screw in the fourth position – it is vital that this mounting point is used and made secure to provide an earth point connection for the cable screen connections.

The network card is connected to the base card using a ribbon cable.

Refer to the documentation supplied with the network card for detailed information on networking. (Ad-Net Document No. 680-027).

2.2.6.5 Integral Printer Option This unit is normally supplied fitted when the panel is ordered.

It is mounted on the chassis door to the left of the display card. Refer to the documentation supplied with the printer kit for fitting / replacement instructions.

2.2.6.5.1 Printer Power Supply

The printer has an integral rechargeable battery that is dedicated to the printer power supply. If the main panel power supply has been turned off for a long period (i.e. more than a month), the battery will need to recharge before printing. Under these conditions, allow 1 hour before performing a test print and 24 hours before normal printing.

2.2.6.5.3 Changing the Paper Roll

The printer mechanism is a simple clamshell design.

Open the printer cover and remove the existing paper roll.

Pull off a length of paper and insert the roll as shown opposite.

Close the cover ensuring that it is snapped shut.

2.3 Wiring Installation

All electrical wiring installation work should be carried out in accordance with the code of practice or applicable national standards appropriate to the country of installation.

To maintain electrical integrity of the SELV wiring on the input, output, loop and communications lines all SELV wiring should be segregated from the LV mains wiring and be wired using cable with insulation suitable for the application.

To minimise the effects of EMC interference all data wiring circuits should be wired with a twisted pair of conductors with a cross sectional area suitable for the loading conditions.

In areas where cabling may come into contact with high frequency interference, such as portable radio transceivers etc. the data wiring cable should be of a twisted pair construction within an overall screen. Care should be taken to correctly terminate this screen, refer to the appropriate sections of this manual for further information for each circuit type.

NB: Minimum / Maximum cable size for all external connections is limited to 0.5mm² / 2.5mm² (22-14AWG).

2.3.1 AC Mains Wiring

Route the high voltage mains AC wiring into the enclosure at the upper left corner only. Keep the AC wiring away from the circuit boards and all other wiring.

2.3.2 Battery Installation

The panel requires two 12V batteries for standby operation.

The battery leads are connected onto the base card via a two-part plug and socket, as shown in the diagram opposite.

Refer to the Specifications for minimum and maximum battery sizes allowed.

2.3.3 Signalling Line Installation

2.3.3.1 General Considerations The Line Driver Module, shown opposite, provides power and signalling pulses for the digital communications with the luminaires.

Up to four Line Drivers can be installed in the panel. Refer to Section 2.2.6 for details of how to install additional line drivers.

Route the signalling circuit away from other electrical cables to minimise the effect of electrical interference. It is recommended that a 2-Core Twisted-Pair cable be used. In extremely noisy conditions, the use of a cable with external screen is recommended.

Refer to Appendix 2 – Recommended Cables for further information on cable types to be used.

When screened cable is used, it is vital to connect the screen / drain wire to the chassis / earth at the cable gland input / earth stud in the panel. Always ensure that all segments of the cable loop have continuity of the screen and take care to ensure that the screen is not exposed to any other earth point (e.g. metalwork, cable trays, junction boxes, etc.).

The outputs of the Line Driver Module are short circuit protected. The wiring can be connected in Radial Format or as a Loop Circuit (Preferred Method).

For ease of maintenance and connection, the wiring is terminated in a plug and socket arrangement, shown opposite.

The signalling circuit consists of a pair of wires (+ and –). Four terminals are provided to enable loop operation.

2.3.3.2 Radial Wiring Format

To wire the signalling circuit as a Radial Line, connect one wire of the 2-Core cable to one of the (+) terminals and connect the other wire to one of the (–) terminals.

Route the cable to each of the luminaires in turn.

Connect Jumper Wires between OUT+ / IN+ and OUT– / IN–.

Total Cable length (from Line Driver to last Luminaire in wiring run) should not exceed 1500 metres.

If a screened cable is used in a radial circuit, the screen at the end of the cable run should also be connected to earth. If there is a voltage potential difference between the

panel earth and the remote earth point, connect the screen to the earth point via a 2.2F polyester (non-polarised) capacitor of suitable voltage rating.

2.3.3.3 Loop Wiring Format PREFERRED METHOD – A fault condition will be indicated if an open circuit condition wiring occurs but the panel will still communicate with all luminaires.

To wire the signalling circuit as a Loop circuit, connect one wire of the 2-Core cable to one of the (+) terminals and connect the other wire to one of the (–) terminals.

Route the cable to each of the luminaires in turn.

Return the wiring to the Line Driver and connect the two wires to the remaining (+) and (–) terminals. See diagram opposite.

Connect the wiring to the terminal blocks in the Luminaire.

2.3.3.4 Pulse Luminaire Serial Numbers Each Pulse Line Unit has a unique serial number. This serial number is printed on a self-adhesive label attached to the module or luminaire enclosure.

As each luminaire is installed and wired to the system, tear off the spare serial number label and affix to the installation record chart supplied with the panel. This will enable quick and simple allocation of soft addresses to each PLU and will provide a record of the installation for future reference.

2.3.4 Auxiliary Supply Output

The Lx-9400 is equipped with an auxiliary 24V DC, 300mA

power supply output.

This can be used for powering ancillary equipment.

Each chassis of the Lx-9800 has its own AUX output.

3.1 Controls and Indications

The Lx-9400 is provided with indications and control functions as shown in the diagram below and described in the following text. Normal operator level indications, controls and user programming can all be achieved using either display.

The buzzer can produce two different sounds to differentiate between different conditions. The buzzer is not currently used.

3.2 Operation

3.2.1 Access Levels

The panel operation is protected from inadvertent and erroneous misuse by means of three access levels.

These levels are as follows:

A Level 1 Untrained User can view the current operational condition of the system.

A Level 2 Authorised User can view the operational condition of the system and may MUTE the internal buzzer. In addition, the USER DEFINED (UDF1 and UDF2) and RESET buttons are enabled and access to the Level 2 Menu functions is available.

A Level 3 User has access to program and configure the operation of the panel. This is described in detail in the Programming Section of this Manual.

3.2.1.1 Changing from Access Level 1 to 2 If the panel has an access key switch fitted, use the key in preference to the menu options shown below.

3.2.5.1.2 Test – Lights (Individually)

An individual luminaire can be tested. For example, this provides a convenient method to test a luminaire after the tube has been replaced. The results for the individual test on this luminaire will be updated in the records and can be viewed later using the test group option if required.

Highlight the INDIVIDUAL option and then press the ✔ button to select.

The display prompts for entry of the address of the device and the test duration as follows.

3.2.5.2 Test - Display The Test Display option checks the operation of all the Indicators and the Graphic Display. All of the Indicators

are turned on and the entire display is shown in reverse.

During this test, it is possible to test the operation of the ,,,,✔ and 0-9 buttons. When a button is

pressed, it is indicated on the display. For example:

To view the details for a specific Log Entry Number, it is possible to select the record by typing in the required

number using the number keys. The number entered is echoed at the upper right of the display. For example:

3.2.6.6 View - Network This Option can be used to obtain diagnostic information when a network is used to connect other panels or remote terminals. The access level of all panels on the network can be checked from this display:

3.2.7 Time / Date

This function allows the time and date in the panel to be changed. A valid password must be entered before

changes are permitted.

On successful password entry, the display shows the current time and date with confirmation of the day of the

week on the bottom line. For example:

To change the settings, use the buttons to highlight the required option. Directly enter the new time or date

using the number buttons. As soon as a number button is pressed, the display will clear the current setting and

NOTE: The time should be entered in 24-hour format. Invalid times and dates cannot be entered.

3.2.8 Status

Highlight the STATUS option and press the ✔ button to return the display to the normal status display screen.

Alternatively, press the Esc button. The normal status display screen will be shown after about 5 seconds.

3.2.9 Lock Controls

To prevent unauthorised access to the control keys and menu functions, highlight the LOCK CONTROLS option

and press the ✔ button to disable the controls.

The display will prompt for confirmation by entering the password.

Press the ✔ key to start printing.

A popup window appears before the printing starts to ask if you wish to only print summaries & failures, or full test results.

3.2.10.2 Print – Log On selection, the display cycles through each log entry and prints this record on the printer.

When the Log print is completed, the display automatically reverts to the Print Options Menu.

Press the Esc button, at any time, to stop and cancel the printout.

3.2.10.3 Print – Feed Paper On selection, the printer will feed one line of paper. The display does not change.

3.2.10.4 Print – Stop On selection, any current printing operations and any information pending in the printer queue are cancelled.

3.2.10.5 Print – Set-Up Printer This feature allows configuration on the printer type(s) and what information is to be automatically printed.

To prevent inadvertent changes, the display will prompt for entry of a password. The display then shows, for example.

The upper line of options determines whether the panel shall automatically print specific events as they occur. Ticking “TEST RESULTS” will make the printer print-out a summary of each automatic test result, together with details of any light fitting that has failed the test.

Note: The ‘Test Results’ and ‘Warnings’ are from devices connected to this panel only.

The lower line of options determines whether a printer is connected and its type.

Use the ,,, and ✔ buttons to highlight the required option and change its setting. Pressing the ✔ button

turns the option ON (✔ is shown) or OFF (– is shown) accordingly.

In the above option, an internal printer will print automatic test results.

4 Programming

4.1 Introduction

These instructions cover the configuration and programming of the panels. A level-3 password is required to

enter the commissioning menus. For details of Passwords, refer to Section 4.3.7.

If this number is lost, it is not possible to enter commission mode functions.

Refer to Section 6.1 for further formation.

4.1.1 Memory Lock

The configuration memory may be protected

against inadvertent change (although this is not

necessary) by means of a memory lock.

Before making any configuration data changes,

move the jumper strap to the OPEN position.

After all changes have been made, move the

jumper strap back to the CLOSE position to

protect the memory against inadvertent change.

Refer to the diagram opposite for information on

the jumper settings.

4.1.2 Navigating through menus

The display will revert to status mode after 60s. Press the ‘Menu’ button to restore the display.

4.1.3 Changing Text Descriptions

Various parameters can have a text description defined. These include loop devices, zones, etc. The zone and

device text descriptions will be shown on the display in the Fault and Warning Conditions, etc. to provide a quick

and clear indication of the source of the problem.

To change the text description, first highlight the text description within the appropriate programming option and

then press the ✔ button. The display then changes to show the text entry dialogue screen. For example:

KEY IN THE REQUIRED TEXT

The method of entering the characters is similar to the method employed on mobile

telephones. The number buttons provide both their appropriate number and several

letters of the alphabet. An example of the keypad is shown opposite.

For example, Button 2 allows entry of the number 2 and letters A, B and C.

When a button is pressed, the first character is shown on the display at the current cursor

position. If the button is pressed again within ½ second, the next character replaces it. A

further press displays the next available character and so on. Refer to the table below for

the list of characters / numbers for each button. After pressing the button to obtain the

required character, wait for 1-second and the character will be entered and the cursor will

move to the next character in the text description.

Pressing another button will immediately enter the previous character and move the cursor on to the next

character.

Use the buttons to move backwards or forwards along the line. When the text description is as required,

press the ✔ button to confirm the change.

If the text has been entered incorrectly, press the ‘Esc’ button to cancel all changes and return to the previous

display.

4.2 Recommended Programming Procedure

The following steps are recommended when installing a system control panel for the first time.

4.3.1 Loops

On selecting the LOOPS option, the display will prompt for the loop to be viewed / programmed. For example: -

Whilst the address field is highlighted, press the buttons to scroll through the device list.

Press the button to select the Serial No field. Whilst parameters are highlighted, press the buttons to select, in turn, the Serial No, Type, Light, and Battery fields.

This menu option enables the assignment of a serial number to a soft address. This is useful for changes to the assignment of a few devices – refer to the "Search PLU" function for initial search and assignment of PLU devices. It also enables the programming of the luminaire type, number of cells and light threshold level at the selected address. The PLU remembers the values programmed by storing these in e2prom memory – note, it may take a few seconds to complete this process. The values are automatically updated in the panel when a ‘Learn’ is performed.

The setting options should not normally require modification, as they will have been predetermined when the PLU was installed in the fitting.

The column on the right hand side gives readings for these relevant parameters within the device and shows the operational status of the luminaire. For example:

The analogue value of the light level is shown (Light = 3 and the light is off).

The measured battery voltage is shown (2.6V). If the battery level is below what is expected for the

number of cells, then the display also indicates the condition with the word “Low” as a warning.

The AC Mains Supply State is shown (OFF).

The Switch input is shown as off (L) or active (H)

4.3.1.1.1 State

This parameter shows the current operational status of the device. For example, this can show Normal, Reset,

Not In Use, Device Missing, etc.

This parameter cannot be changed.

4.3.1.1.2 Test Group

The luminaire should be allocated to a test group for both automatic and manual testing. Up to 50 test groups

can be used.

Within a zone or escape route, allocate alternate luminaires to different test groups. This will ensure that only a

selection of the luminaires will be tested at any one time.

Use the number keys to assign / change the test group for the device. By default, odd numbered addresses are

assigned to Group 1 and even numbered addresses are assigned to Group 2.

The I/O Module is not assigned to a Test Group by default (Test Group = 0).

Central battery systems typically use a single output relay to bring on the emergency power to a number of light

fittings. The Output must be assigned to the same “Test Group” as the group of luminaires that this output

controls. The panel will then turn this output on when any of the light fittings in the same Test Group are to be

tested.

The Switch Input of the I/O Module can be programmed to a number of actions. If the action is defined as

“Group test Input” then assign the Test Group to the same “Test Group” as the group of luminaires that this

input controls. All other input actions do not use the Test Group Function and the value should be left at 0.

4.3.1.1.3 Zone

This parameter shows the Zone to which this device has been assigned. Use the number keys to change the

zone assigned to the device. It is recommended that this be set to the same zone number as per the fire

compartment zones for common reference.

4.3.1.1.4 Description (Device Text)

This parameter shows the 26-character location text assigned to this device. For guidance on how to change

the text, refer to Section 4.1.3.

4.3.1.1.5 Serial Number

Each PLU is programmed with a unique serial number during manufacture. The panel does not use this number

for communicating with the device. Instead, it uses a soft address in the range 001-249. The panel, however,

keeps a record of the serial number of the device assigned to each soft address in its memory (as configured

using the Search PLU function). Normally, the serial number actually read from the device will match the serial

number in the panel's memory. In this case, the panel will indicate OK in the Readings column.

In the unusual event that the serial numbers do not match, the panel will indicate both serial numbers on the

display. This may be because, for example, the luminaire has been changed.

Use the number keys to enter the required PLU Serial Number for use at this soft address.

4.3.1.1.6 Type

The type field shows the device installed at the address location.

For luminaires equipped with the Lxp-302 or Lxp-304 modules, the type of fitting can be changed. Press the ✔

button to toggle between MAINTAINED and NON-MAINT.

For the Lxp-302, the display also indicates a “reading” of whether the AC Mains Supply to the luminaire is on or

off.

For the Lxp-110 I/O Module, there are two sub addresses for each device, one for the output (type = RELAY)

and one for the input (type = SWITCH).

4.3.1.1.7 Light

The minimum light level is the analogue value of the light intensity measured by the PLU below which a lamp

failure indication will be indicated. To enter an alternative level, key in the number required using the number

keys. When all digits have been entered, press the ✔ button. The panel will communicate with the PLU control

module to change its stored operational parameter.

The default value assigned to the light level threshold is 20.

The actual Light Threshold level to be used will depend greatly on the type and performance of the particular

luminaire and on ambient lighting conditions. Check the operation of the luminaire using the test function

(described below) and adjust the light level threshold to a value that will ensure:

1 The panel will not indicate erroneous lamp failures

2 The panel will report true lamp failures

Take into account the effects of ageing on the tube. This typically means that the threshold should be set to

<50% of the normal light level measured for a new tube.

The following table gives typical values for a range of tube types.

The "Reading" indicates the current light level measured by the PLU. The display also indicates if the light is on

or off.

The light output of the Lxp-111 is designed to be compatible with the default threshold (20) and no adjustment

should be necessary.

4.3.1.1.8 Battery

The type of battery and the number of cells can be changed.

To change the number of cells, highlight the cells field and use the number keys to directly enter the number of cells in the luminaire.

To change the type of battery, highlight the type field and press the ✔ button to toggle between NiCad, NiMH

and Lead acid battery types.

The "Readings" figure shows the actual battery voltage measured by the PLU. An indication is also shown if this is "Low" or "High". The panel automatically adjusts its limits depending on the battery type selected to account for the normal battery voltage per cell for each battery type.

4.3.1.1.9 I/O Module Input Action

A number of luminaires can be placed in the test mode. Scroll through the addresses and press the ✔ button to

Each test can be stopped individually. Alternatively, press ESC to exit from this menu and all tests will be immediately stopped.

Individual I/O Module relay outputs can also be turned on during commissioning from the loop view/edit. In the

example below, pressing the ✔ button will energise the relay without any other PLU having to be in test.

4.3.1.2 Loops - Auto Learn

4.3.1.2.1 Normal Procedure / Initial learn

The panel can automatically learn the presence or absence of devices at all addresses (where soft addresses have been assigned) connected to the loop. When the Auto Learn option is selected, the panel starts searching each address on the loop to locate and find all of the devices connected. A display is shown to indicate the progress of this procedure.

For example:

The Auto Learn function will only find PLU modules that have been programmed with a soft address. Ensure that each module is assigned a soft address before performing the auto-learn function.

When all addresses have been searched, the panel displays a summary screen showing the quantity of devices found for each type of device.

4.3.1.2.2 Procedure if the Panel finds Devices Missing

When the panel cannot communicate with a device previously programmed into the panel, the Auto Learn process is suspended and the display shows a pop-up window with options. For example:

If the missing device is kept (or all missing devices are kept), the panel remembers the programming for these devices. The panel will report a fault condition until such time as the missing devices are reconnected.

If the missing device is deleted (or all missing devices are deleted), the panel clears all previous programming for these devices. This includes any sensitivity threshold changes, text assignments, zone assignment, action, etc.

Press the buttons to highlight the required menu option and then press the ✔ button to confirm. The pop-up

window will disappear and the panel will continue with the auto learn process.

If a single device is deleted and another missing device is subsequently registered, the display will once again show the pop-up window to keep or delete this device.

4.3.1.2.3 Procedure if the Panel finds Devices Added

When the panel finds a device not previously learnt and programmed in the panel, the Auto Learn process is suspended and the display shows a pop-up window with options. For example:

window will disappear and the panel will continue with the auto learn process.

If a single device is accepted / rejected and another new device is subsequently registered, the display will once again show the pop-up window to accept or reject this device.

4.3.1.2.4 Procedure if the Panel finds Devices Changed

When the panel finds a new type of device installed at an address previously learnt and programmed in the panel, the Auto Learn process is suspended and the display shows a pop-up window with options. For example:

This situation could arise for example if an I/O type device has been installed in place of a luminaire.

If the new device type is rejected (or all new device types are rejected), the panel remembers the programming for the original devices. The panel will report a fault condition until such time as the correct device types are reconnected.

Press the buttons to highlight the required menu option and then press the ✔ button to confirm. The pop-up

window will disappear and the panel will continue with the auto learn process.

If a single device is accepted / rejected and another new device type is subsequently registered, the display will once again show the pop-up window to accept or reject this device.

4.3.1.3 Loops – Search PLU Each PLU is programmed with a unique serial number during manufacture. The panel does not use this number for communicating with the device. Instead, it uses a soft address in the range 001-249.

These functions allow the panel to assign soft addresses to each PLU and store the soft address in the PLU e2prommemory.

4.3.1.3.1 Search All PLU

This is the main procedure to follow when installing a new installation or adding a luminaire(s) to the installation.

The display first shows the address ranges as it searches for each PLU installed on the signalling line as follows:

Press the buttons to scroll through the list and use the number buttons to configure the required soft

address to a PLU currently unassigned. Press the ✔ button to jump to the next PLU Serial number with an

unassigned soft address (address 000 or address 200). Press Esc to abort the search and list the serial numbers found at that point.

Note: It is not normally possible for two serial numbers to be assigned to the same soft address. If a serial number is changed to a soft address that is currently assigned to another luminaire, then the panel automatically sets the other luminaire to address 000. This serial number will now also require re-assignment.

In the above example, however, the panel has found two serial numbers with the same soft address. The most likely cause for this occurrence is that a new luminaire / I/O module has been added to this loop where the PLU had been previously assigned to a soft address elsewhere. Adjust the soft addresses accordingly as described above.

When adding a luminaire / I/O Module to a current installation, press the button to highlight the serial number field and use the number buttons to enter the serial number of the newly installed device. The display will automatically jump to the required entry.

After any changes have been made, the display prompts for an AUTO-LEARN to be performed. This is an essential procedure to update the panel's configuration memory with the changes.

4.3.1.3.2 Assign From Panel Configuration Memory

If a PC configuration file has been transmitted to and stored in the panel's memory, this function will automatically assign soft addresses in each PLU in accordance with the configuration file data.

The display shows the progress of this procedure with the following display.

Each soft address is shown in turn along with the serial number of the device. When all devices have been addressed, the display reverts to the main loops menu.

4.3.1.4 Loops – Driver This function displays loop output and input voltages and loop loading.

A diagnostic display with automatic scanning of the loop to find devices with minimum and maximum communication pulse heights is available. Press the button to select this view.

4.3.2 Zones

The Commission Zones option lists all the zones in use by the panel and allows the zone text description to be

changed.

followed by the ✔ button. Note that only zones in use are displayed.

4.3.3 Exit

To exit the Commission Mode and return the panel to normal operation (ie level 2), select the “Exit” option. The display will prompt for confirmation of the level 3 password. For example:

If the password is incorrect (this will be indicated) or if the password is not entered within 5-seconds, the display will revert to the Commission Level Menu and level-2 will not be entered.

After commissioning, the panel must always be returned to level 2 (or level 1) to give normal fire coverage.

4.3.4 Tests

The panel provides the programming capability to define up to 400 different tests to be automatically performed at specific dates. Select the TESTS option and the display will show: -

Devices with different battery duration should not be included in the same group. Quarterly tests should typically be undertaken for 1/3 of their quoted duration time. Annual tests should be undertaken for their full duration time.

Refer to the appropriate National Standards, applicable in the country of installation, for the required test durations and frequencies.

As a default, the panel is pre-configured to test both groups 1 and 2 on the 1st of every month for 10 minutes and annually on the 15th/16th June for 180 minutes (3 hour test). The panel, therefore, automatically provides a pre-configured testing regime that will suit a basic two-group system without the need for further programming.

4.3.4.1 Group Use the number keys to enter the group of devices that should be tested.

If this test was previously undefined (i.e. all blank) default values are then entered against the remaining fields (1st January, 12:00 noon and 5 minutes duration).

4.3.4.2 Date Use the number keys to enter the required test date in the format dd (day) / mm (month).

The panel contains an in-built real-time clock to automatically schedule the tests. It automatically accounts for leap years in its scheduling but will not permit entry of 29th February as an automatic test date. (Note: Tests can be manually undertaken on 29th February – refer to User Section of this manual).

4.3.4.3 Time Use the number keys to enter the required test time in the format hh (hours) : mm (minutes).

The clock uses the 24-hour format so 3:00 pm should be entered as 15:00 hours.

4.3.4.4 Period Use the number keys to enter the required test duration. The maximum duration permitted is 300 minutes (5 hours).

Refer to Section 5.1 for industry recommended test durations and frequencies.

Testing for 5 minutes will provide an adequate check on the performance of the luminaire for the monthly tests.

4.3.5 Time and Date

This function can be used to change the time and date in the panel and is the same as detailed in the User Operation Section. A confirmation password is not required when selecting from the Commissioning Level.

4.3.6 View Options

The View Menu Options are identical to those available during Level-2 operation.

For further information on the View Options and the information that is presented, refer to the User Operation Section.

4.3.7 Passwords

The panel provides up to 10 User Level-2 passwords and 2 Level-3 passwords. All of the passwords can be changed.

On entry to the function, the display shows a list of the passwords. For example:

To change a password, use the buttons to highlight the required password and then enter the new

password using the number buttons. When the password is correct, press the ✔ button to confirm.

4.3.8 PC Config

The PC Link Option enables the connection of the PC Configuration Tool for retrieving configuration data from the panel and programming configuration data from a file on the PC.

For further information, refer to the Manual supplied with the PC Configuration Tool.

4.3.9 Setup

The Setup Options Menu enables the configuration of panel generic operating parameters. When the option is selected, the display shows a list of the available parameters. For example:

4.3.9.1 Network This Network node is set to 0 for a standard non-networked panel. For panels in a networked application please refer to the Network document, reference: 680-027.

4.3.9.2 Panel Zone By default all the panel inputs are assigned to the Panel Zone. Alternatively the PC configuration program allows individual inputs to have different zones if required.

4.3.9.3 Service Number The Service Number is the telephone number that is shown on the status display whenever a fault condition

occurs. To change the number, press the ✔ button when the option is highlighted. The number is entered using

the text entry facility; refer to Section 4.1.3 for guidance on how to enter text.

4.3.9.4 Service Due Date The next service (over) due date can be entered into the panel memory. When this date is reached, the panel will enter a fault condition to alert the site operator that a service visit is overdue. To change the due date, press

the ✔ button when the option is highlighted. The display prompts for entry of the next service date. For

example:

Use the buttons to select between the time and date. Use the number buttons to enter the required time or date.

As soon as a new service date is entered, the panel will cancel any Service Due Fault condition.

4.3.9.5 Trace Logging Mode The Trace Logging Option determines what type of information and to what level is stored in the Event Log.

There are three options:

STANDARD = the normal operating mode logging fault and warning conditions as they occur.

STANDARD + = an extended version of the standard operating mode where the removal of fault and warning conditions are also logged.

DIAGNOSTIC = a full diagnostic trace of all conditions with greater depth to aid diagnosis of fault conditions.

To change the option, press the ✔ button.

To erase the event log, press the button to view the additional command option as follows:

Press the ✔ button and the display will show that the event log is being erased by display the message

“WORKING…” After the event log is erased, the display reverts to the Set-up Options screen.

4.3.9.6 Company LCD Logo This parameter determines whether the Company Logo is shown on the display during normal operation. To

change the setting, press the ✔ button. The status changes from ✔ to X and vice versa.

4.3.9.7 Program ID The display shows the part number and version of the software installed in the panel. Press the button to see

the program checksum (8 digits)

4.3.9.8 Config Data The Config Data option provides the option to view the checksum for the configuration data and an option to

erase the Config Data.

To view the Config Data Checksum, press the button. The display then shows:

5 Service and Maintenance

5.1 Maintenance / Inspection Schedule

ICEL: 1008

The following is taken from an extract of ICEL 1008 Emergency Lighting Risk Assessment Guide 2001 (Appendix D & Section 11)

It is important that equipment is properly tested & maintained if it is to function correctly when required in an emergency.

All emergency lighting should be regularly checked and maintained by a competent person.

Note: The Lx-9400 lighting panel monitors the required Daily tests. It can also be configured to automatically perform the required monthly, six monthly and yearly tests.

The results of all testing and any necessary corrective action should be recorded in a log record held on site. This shall be available if required, for inspection by any authorised person.

To meet these reporting requirements, the Lx-9400 stores the results for the tests. They are then available for retrieval, storage and printing using the Light Logger PC Software (PCNET-008).

5.1.1 Daily Actions

The site operator / user should perform the following checks and actions:

• Visually check that all maintained lamps are operating

• Check that any system fault recorded is given urgent attention and record all corrective actions in a log book

5.1.2 Monthly Actions

The site operator / user should perform the following checks and actions:

• Check all luminaries and other emergency lighting equipment is in good condition, all lamps and light controllers are clean, undamaged & not blackened.

• Perform a brief test all emergency lighting equipment by simulating a failure of the normal lighting supply. This test should not exceed a quarter of the equipment rated duration. Check that all equipment functions correctly.

• Check that, upon restoring the mains supply, all supply healthy indicators are illuminated

5.1.3 Quarterly Actions

The site operator / user should perform the following checks and actions:

• Carry out the inspection & testing outlined in the monthly schedule, but conduct a test on the equipment for one third of its rated duration.

5.1.4 Annual Actions

• A full system test should be conducted by a competent service engineer including a full rated duration test of the system.

NOTE: The Lx-9400 Control Panel will fully check luminaires and record the test results to ensure that the each luminaire operates correctly, produces the necessary light output and all supplies are healthy. It cannot, however, check that the luminaire has not been physically obscured or obstructed, painted over or similarly affected – a walk of the building should be undertaken at intervals, determined by risk assessment, to ensure that each luminaire remains fit for purpose.

5.2 Replacement of Components

In general, all of the components parts used in the construction of the panel have been selected for long life and reliability.

However, certain components may require to be changed on a regular service basis. The details of these are as follows:

5.2.1 Batteries

For battery installation, see section 2.3.2

Respect the Environment.

Batteries must be disposed of responsibly and in accordance with any local regulations.

5.2.1.1 Standby Batteries Expected Life: - 3-5 years at an ambient temperature of 20°C

Replacement Schedule: - As above. However, note that the expected battery life is shortened by increase in ambient temperature. The life reduces by 50% for every 10°C rise above ambient. Refer to battery manufacturer for further information.

For optimum performance and charge retention, Yuasa recommend that batteries are ‘top-charged’ prior to installation.

For batteries up to 6 months old from date of manufacture, charge at 2.4V per cell (i.e. 14.4V per battery) for 20 hours prior to installing the batteries.

It is not recommended to use batteries that are older than 6 months from the date of manufacture on a new installation.

It is quite normal for lead-acid batteries to vent hydrogen when being charged.

The panel is adequately ventilated to dissipate this hydrogen. DO NOT seal the enclosure or install in a sealed enclosure or cavity.

5.2.1.2 Lithium Battery

WARNING – A lithium battery is used for the real time clock.

Replace only with the same type or authorised equivalent. This battery is not rechargeable.

Expected Shelf Life: - > 10 years

Replacement Schedule: - 10 years for panels in continuous service

10 years for spares (i.e. when the panel / board is not powered)

Replace if the battery voltage falls below 2.6 volts.

5.2.1.3 Printer Battery Pack

WARNING – A NiMH 6V, 1.5Ah battery pack is used to supply standby operating power for

the internal printer (if printer is fitted).

5.2.2 Liquid Crystal Display

Replacement Schedule: - When the display becomes difficult to read. The display contrast will gradually fade with time.

6 Appendices

6.1 Appendix 1 – Forgotten Level 3 Password

Should the Level-3 password be forgotten, contact Customer Support to obtain a temporary permit number to regain access to the panel programming functions.

Customer Support will require a decryption key displayed by the panel. To obtain this number, attempt to gain access to the Level-3 Programming Functions entering “1” when prompted for the password. As soon as the “Password Invalid” message is shown, press the “0” button and the display will show a decryption key. Make a note of the first part of this number.

Signalling Circuits

All cables are Belden twisted pair (or equivalent).

8762, 8760 & 8719 types are screened, twisted pair and are recommended where a high level of high frequency electrical noise is prevalent in the installation.

8205, 8461 & 8471 types are unscreened, twisted pair and are suitable for use in environments where there is no risk of contamination by high frequency asymmetrical electrical noise.

Where the installation requires cables with low smoke and fume emissions use Belden LSF cables, types 8762NH, 8760NH, 8719NH, 8205NH, 8461NH & 8471NH.

The table below quotes the recommended maximum runs for specific load conditions. All distances are quoted in metres. Maximum circuit length is 1500m unless stated.
