DISCLAIMER REGARDING THE FLÅM RAILWAY

Flåm Utvikling AS (Flåm Development Ltd.) Flåmsbana / the Flåm Railway reserve the right to change and correct any information provided in this document due to possible changes in operating and contract conditions, meaning that we are unable to deliver services according to the descriptions.

PRODUCT INFORMATION AND FACTS As one of Norway’s few private railways, we can offer a train journey through the best Norway can display of beautiful, untouched and dramatic nature. Tickets for the Flåm Railway, solely or combined with NSB’s (Norwegian State Railways) lines, can be

purchased from all manned stations and most travel agencies, as well as from our local sales office in Flåm station.

The Flåm Railway - idyll and spectacular

The journey from Flåm at the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord, up to the high mountain station at Myrdal on the Bergen Railway, is a railway experience unparalleled in Europe; 20 kilometres long with a descent of 2,838 feet and a gradient of 1 metre in 18! The gradient is unique for this

kind of ordinary gauge railway, and to cope with the enormous height difference, the track runs partly through tunnels which spiral in and out of the mountainside.

The journey through the steep and narrow Flåm Valley, with views of mighty waterfalls and mountain peaks, takes about 60

minutes. The train travels slowly and even stops at the most scenic spots.

The trains from and to Flåm connect at

Myrdal with most day-trains running between the capital city of Oslo and Bergen on the west coast.

Combined and co-ordinated travels

The Flåm Railway and NSB’s Oslo – Bergen Railway are cooperating on the same ticket system, which gives an opportunity to have a common and a general train ticket. For co-ordinated travels on both lines, the company who issues the tickets is responsible for – and must provide – all necessary seat reservations for both lines. See page no. 9 for more info.

Rail fares and payment Our prices for 2015 are listed on page no. 10. Note that the fares from Flåm to Vatnahalsen and

Reinunga stations are the same as from Flåm to Myrdal. We accept payment by cash or credit card at point of boarding, or by voucher from well-known

clients. If you are using voucher and invoice we add a fee of NOK 50 per invoice. Note that the invoices as per today will be sent through our account partner “NSB Regnskap”. Invoices are to be paid within 15 days, for delayed payments an interest will be charged.

Seat reservations Our train sets have a total capacity of 525 seats. On the Flåm Railway it is only possible to reserve

seats for groups starting from 10 persons, and customers who do not participate in organised groups can use one of our carriages intentioned for individuals.

Seat reservation for groups is compulsory but free of charge. Reservations are shown by “reserved-sign” stickers with the group’s name on the train windows - there are no numbered seats. We recommend that seats are reserved well in advance, and please use the Internet, fax or

e-mail if possible. It is a great help if the booking comprises of an alternative departure, as some departures may be frequently fully booked on days with high demand.

For all group bookings it is important to inform us of any major changes in the number of travellers or possible cancellations. Missing information regarding changes or cancellations, may lead to a penalty fee of the ordinary fare invoiced.

Confirmation of reservations For Flam Railway reservations we recommend our online booking system at:

www.flambooking.com. All bookings will be confirmed automatically, no matter the date of travel. For combines travels with the Bergen Railway (NSB – Norwegian State Railway) the earliest we can confirm your booking is 100 days before departure. We will contact you if any problems with

pre-booked reservations occur.

Welcome to the Flåm Railway – an experience all year round!

NEWS FROM THE FLÅM RAILWAY The Flåm Railway named - World’s most incredible train journey in Lonely Planet Traveller Magazine March 2014 issue

Here is some of what they said: “Seen on the map, the Flåmsbana might look like a railway of modest ambitions (…) Seen in real life, its epic stature becomes apparent: a little line that courageously scrambles

through a landscape of tumbling waterfalls and sheer mountains, descending from the treeless expanses of the Hardangervidda to the mouth of one of Norway’s most spectacular inlets, the Aurlandsfjord”

The world’s best destination and a spectacular train journey The National Geographic Traveler Magazine has named the Norwegian Fjords the world’s

best destination to visit and the Flåm Railway as one of Europe’s 10 Top Train journeys. “The Society of International Railway Travellers” has listed the Flåm Railway as one of the world’s top 25 train journeys.

AURLAND HARBOUR AUTHORITY

Fjord arms cutting through the landscape are a common sight along the Norwegian coastline. After the last ice age the wild and beautiful scenery of the western Norway was formed by

water melting from glaciers and rivers that carved their way through rocks from the earliest period of the earth’s history. When the ice receded, the landscape was complete transformed into the high mountains, narrow walleyes, and deep fjords you can admire if you visit our

area.

Flåm The Aurlandsfjord

Aurland Harbour consists of four harbours; Flåm, Aurland, Undredal and Gudvangen, nestling

securely in the innermost part of the famous Sognefjord. Large cruise ships squeeze through the narrow fjord arms surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks and waterfalls cascading down the mountainside. The 204 kilometres long and 1308 metre deep Sognefjord is the

second longest and deepest fjord in the world, and has been a highlight and a main attraction for cruises tourists along the Norwegian coast for many decades.

MORE THAN 100 YEARS OF HOSPITALITY!

At the end of the 19th century, Fretheim Hotel was a large farm which accommodated rich English lords who came to fish for salmon in the Flåm River and to enjoy the scenic landscape. Originally the hotel was built in the Swiss style, but has evolved throughout the

years in line with the increase of tourists and travelers on the Bergen railway and more recently the Flåm railway. Today, the hotel is an exciting building both architecturally and historically, with the distinctive, stately old part of the hotel harmonizing perfectly with the

more recent part of the building built in 2000. The history of Fretheim Hotel is carefully preserved and you can still see how the hotel used

to be. The old part of the hotel has been beautifully renovated, with open fireplaces and antique furniture in the lounges, library, conference rooms, and not least, all the historical guest rooms. You can walk around the corridors and discover new things at every corner and

enjoy the atmosphere of a glorious past. Fretheim Hotel became a member of the Historical Hotels in January 2012.

Fretheim Hotel has a close cooperation with local farmers and welcome their products of high quality. The hotel is well known for its cuisine and use of local ingredients. The area

surrounding Flåm is rich in local producers of unique foods, such as the Undredal cheese, small-scale producers of top quality lamb, venison and reindeer and, not least, the organic vegetables from Sogn Jord og Hagebruksskule, the local agricultural college.

Fretheim Hotel is located in Flåm, which is the perfect base for excursions in the unspoiled, beautiful and wild scenery of West Norway. Since we are a certificated Eco-lighthouse, we

truly care about the environment, our history and traditions. Every room has a view of the fjord and mountains, which guarantee a unique stay.

THE AURLAND SHOE

The Aurland Shoe, as it appears today, has been produced since the mid 1930′s. Previously, 19 different shoe factories where located in Aurland and at the peak nearly 100 people were employed as shoemakers. Today the Aurland Shoe Factory is the only remaining factory that

still produces the traditional Aurland shoe.

In summer 2009, the Aurland Shoe Factory opened a visitor center in the same building as

the shoe factory, in order to learn more about the history and the traditional craft of shoe making. The shoe factory in Aurland is one of the few remaining shoe factories in Norway where you can experience working craftsmen. Furthermore, the visitor center offers

informative exhibitions and a factory outlet where it is possible to purchase the Aurland shoe and other leather products.

The visitor center is based on the Canadian model of ‘Économusée’. The purpose of an Économusée is to promote and keep alive traditional crafts, skills and knowledge. An Économusée is not a traditional museum but designed for small-scale businesses specialized

in arts and crafts who want to provide the visitors with information about the production process, skills and techniques.

Attractions and places of interest in Flåm and Aurland Region

THE FLÅM VALLEY

The Flåm valley is a typical west Norwegian fjord valley, cutting through the mountains. Through millions of years, melting

water, stones and gravel from the glaciers have formed the Flåm valley and the Aurland valley into the beautiful landscape you see today. You have easy access to the nature in the Flåm

valley – so please enjoy! The Flåm Railway is considered a masterpiece of engineering

work. It is one of the most spectacular railway lines in the world because of the construction on normal tracks from the fjord to

the mountain plateau 865 metres above sea level. Almost 80% of the 20 kilometres railway line has a gradient of 5.5% or 1:18. One of the highlight on the journey is the mighty

Kjosfossen waterfall. You might combine the Flåm Railway and a walk in the Flåm

valley. Take the train to Myrdal or Vatnahalsen station and walk the 20 km back to Flåm. It takes approximately 5 hours with easy walk. For a shorter walk you can leave the train at

Blomheller station, 11 km from Flåm. The raod you walk is the old Navvy road. It was used for transportation of goods and materials when building the Bergen Railway in the beginning of

the 1900’s.

The Nærøyfjord was listed on the UNESCO’ World Heritage list in 2005. The purpose of the list is to encourage everyone to

protect and preserve cultural and natural heritage sites around the world. The Nærøyfjorden “Landskapsvernområde” takes care of the distinctive geology, special plant life, rich animal life

and ancient cultural history. Several places along the shore, small farms without road access tell about an era when the

fjord was the most important traffic artery in the region.

ACTIVITIES IN FLÅM

THE OLD NAVVIES BIKING ROAD-- RALLARVEGEN

“Rallarvegen” (The Navvies Road) is known as the most spectacular cycling route in Norway. The path starts at

Haugastøl, passes through Finse and Hallingskeid and ends in Flåm. The total length between Haugastøl and Flåm is 82 km. The road was used to transport equipment and material during

the construction of the Bergen Railway. Finse, which is located 1222 meters above sea level, is Norway's highest railway station. You will also find the “Rallarmuseet” (The Navvy

Museum), which is well worth a visit.

SKIING Fretheim Hotel and Flåm is situated right in the middle of 4 ski destinations. One and a half hour drive from Flåm you find the

ski resorts Hemsedal, Geilo and Filefjell, and it takes just 40 minutes to get to the new ski resort Myrkdalen. Fretheim Hotel

offers a ski package that includes hotel, breakfast, dinner, transportation and skiing in Myrkdalen. The surrounding area is also ideal for cross-country skiing. Skiing equipment for rent.

HIKING THE AURLAND VALLEY You can walk this beautiful trail on your own or together with a

local and knowledgeable guide. The trail starts at Østerbø which is situated about 820 meters above sea level and ends at Vassbygdi only 68 meters above sea level. This is the lower

part of an old access-road between the eastern and western part of Norway, and passes through old cultivated land surrounded by stunning scenery. On your way you will see

some of the 470 different kinds of plants existing in the Aurland Valley, old farmhouses, rivers and waterfalls.

On the way down the Aurland Valley the path splits in two. You can choose to go down the Bear Path, which is not for those

who are scared of heights. It is very steep, but has a fantastic view! You can also take an easier route. You will also pass "Vetlahelvete" (Small Hell), one of nature’s artworks in the

form of a massive hollow in the mountain. Nobody knows how deep it is because it is filled with water. This is a hike so magnificent you have to experience it! To get to Østerbø you

take a bus from Flåm Station, and to go back again
