GENERAL

The Massey Ferguson 5400 series tractors were designed with versatility in mind. The 5400 series gives the producer the ability to tailor the tractor to meet any needs while remaining within budget. The 5400 series tractors provide increased performance whether operating in the yard or in the field. The tractors range from 60 to 115 PTO horsepower. The machines are available with either a cab or platform, and can be equipped with a 2WD front axle or a Powered Front Axle (PFA). NOTE: Platform not available in models 5465, 5470, 5475 and 5480. Furthermore, the 5400 series offers a choice of the standard sheet metal package, or the optional high visibility sheet metal. High visibility metal further increases the versatility of the tractors in tight spaces or in loader applications. 2008 has brought about many changes to the 5400 series line up. The engines powering the tractors will be Tier III compliant (with the exception of 5435. Tier III production in late 2008). The new Tier III models feature a one piece hood that follows the family look of the 6400’s and 7400’s. The 5435 through 5460 tractors will feature the same dependable 4.4L Perkins with a new electronic fuel management system, common rail delivery and smart wastegate turbo. The 5465 6 cylinder model has increased in displacment from a 6.0L to a 6.6L Perkins. In addition, the 5400 series will feature two new models: the 5475 and 5480. The reliability of the Perkins engine makes the 5400 series suitable to numerous applications in any climate, and the advanced technology that makes up the SisuDiesel creates a small powerhouse. The 5400 series provides operators with concise, versatile power in a small package. With a wide range of adaptability, greater reliability, and reduced maintenance time, this series is sure to be of value in any operation.

Standard Sheet Metal The 5400 series tractors are available in two different sheet metal configurations. Standard sheet metal is the base package for the entire line-up. Standard sheet metal provides ample room for service under the hood as well as allowing more room for air flow through the front radiators.

High Visibility Sheet Metal The 5435 - 5455 tractors have the option for high visibility sheet metal. The main purpose of high visibility sheet metal is to bring the op-erator’s line of sight closer to the front of the tractor. In the case of the 5400 series, the line of sight can be increased by up to 30%. In applications where a loader is used, the op-erator will have a greater view of the loaders range of travel. Changes in radiator align-ment and fan design provide excellent air flow through the high visibility sheet metal design.

ENGINE

Massey Ferguson 5435, 5445, 5455, and 5460 tractors feature the 1104 series 4 cylinder Perkins engine. The 5465 and 5475 feature the Perkins 1106 series 6 cylinder engine. The new 5470 features the 44CTA engine by SisuDiesel™, a subsidiary of AGCO Corporation. While the 5480 features the 49CTA SisuDiesel engine. The Perkins 1104 and 1106 series engines feature numerous improvements from previous models. For example, the 1104 has a 30% increase in low speed torque while the 1106 has a 12% increase over previous models. Also, research in emissions control has produced an engine that not only meets Tier III emissions standards, but produces almost no visible smoke. Additional Tier III improvements include a new electronic fuel management system, common rail fuel delivery, transport boost and smart wastegate turbo. The new Tier III engines are enclosed in a new one piece hood. Further research in engine design has produced a Perkins engine that is quieter, up to 3 decibels, in raw engine noise. This noise reduction was accomplished with numerous innovations. A high contact ratio gear train, a pre-stressed engine block, and an open top deck block design have all helped to reduce raw engine noise. All 5400 series Perkins-powered tractors are equipped with either a Bosch or a Delphi fuel injection system. Regardless of the injection system, operators will see up to a 6% increase in fuel efficiency over previous 1000 series engines. SisuDiesel engines have been used in Massey Ferguson tractors since 1988, but the SisuDiesel 44CTA and 49CTA are new to the 5400 series. The reliability and torque of larger SisuDiesel engines have set the standard for agricultural engines. Each engine is tested and approved before being installed.

Perkins Engines The new Tier III, Perkins engines feature electronic fuel injection with common rail fuel deliv-ery, transport boost and a wastegate turbocharger. They also feature a turbocharger and intercooler. Each engine boasts reduced emissions, timing gear set for reduced noise and a new rear oil seal for improved reliability. Finally, redesigned pistons and cylinder heads pro-vide increased combustion, power, and fuel efficiency.

4 Valve Cylinder Head

The Perkins 1104D and 1106D feature 4-valve cast cylinder heads. The new 4-valve design improves gas exchange approximately 25% over the previous design. The increased gas flow also reduces the “pumping” require-ment freeing up mechanical power. This de-sign provides an optimal location for injector placement: in the center of the head vertically above the cylinder. Results are lower emis-sions and improved fuel burn, creating more power and less emissions.

Perkins Common Rail System

In a Perkins common rail delivery system, fuel is pumped up to high pressure, a maximum of over 22,000 PSI, in the rail. It is then released by the injectors into the cylinder as required for engine performance. This configuration offers more advanced timing of fuel flow. The electronic fuel management controls the opening, duration, and closing of the injectors for an even quicker response to changing tractor conditions.

Transport Boost Perkins Tier III diesel engines now feature a transport boost. When the operator selects 3rd or 4th range, additional power is gener-ated for transport needs. Turbo boost makes getting from one field to the other much easier and faster.

Smart Wastegate

The Perkins Diesel engine features a smart wastegate inside the turbocharger. The wastegate controller is electronically actuated when exhaust gasses need to be diverted away from the turbine wheel. The wastegate ensures that the turbo boost is stabilized which will preserve the turbocharger and the engine.

The 6 cylinder, Tier III models (5465 and 5475) will come equipped with a pivoting cool-ing package. This pivoting cooling package follows the same design of the high horse-power Massey Ferguson tractor line. With its pivoting capabilities, access to the radiator and other engine components is achieved much easier.

SisuDiesel® Engines The SisuDiesel 44 CTA and 49 CTA are Citius series engine, Tier III compliant and feature Bosch electronic fuel injection, wastegate turbocharging and inter-cooling. These engines are assembled, tested and approved before installation in each tractor. Each engine is fitted with a serial number plate that lists the builder’s or building teams' name and horsepower pro-duced during testing. SisuDiesel engines are known for their low end torque, torque reserve and miserly fuel con-sumptions, but the 44 and 49 CTA series 4-cylinder engines now produce the power that a 6 cylinder might produce. The lengthy 500 hour service interval keeps the tractor working longer and saves on maintenance costs. SisuDiesel has been producing quality engines since 1942. Previously known as Valmet en-gines, they have been installed in Massey Ferguson tractors since 1998. SisuDiesel became an AGCO owned company in 2004, leading to improved refinements for Massey Ferguson tractors, superior product support and a more economical package overall.

Cross-Flow Cylinder Heads The CTA engines feature a cast 4-valve per cylinder head. The cross-flow design im-proves gas exchange through the combustion process. The increased gas flow also reduces the “pumping” requirement freeing up me-chanical power. This design provides a “cool” side of the engine on which to place service items. Cool intake valves are placed on either side of the hot exhaust valves to balance the thermal load, resulting in efficient cooling, and balanced power production between cylin-ders.

Single-Piece Cast Iron Block

The robust design of the block adds consider-able strength to the engine allowing it to act as a major load bearing portion of the tractor. This reduces the need for an oversized side frame. The result is a tractor with a shorter turning radius.

Fractured Piston Rods

The big end of the connecting rod is fracture-split, making it stronger. The connecting rod can thus be made 17 percent lighter, which re-duces vibration and increases the durability of engine. The rods are then connected by spe-cial bolts.

Wet Cylinder Liners with Mid Supports

SisuDiesel™ engines feature wet cylinder lin-ers that are centrally supported and replace-able. By efficiently cooling the top end of each cylinder liner, total engine heat is reduced, thus allowing greater power. The central support meanwhile reduces vibration by 75 percent, reducing wear on the cylinders and cylinder liners, and reducing engine noise. Blow by, oil consumption and particulate emissions are also significantly reduced.

Pistons The piston heads are coated in graphite which reduces friction inside the cylinder. Reduced friction results in less heat and longer engine life.

2, Four Valve Cylinder Heads The CTA engines feature 2, 4-valve cast cylin-der heads. The new 4-valve design improves gas exchange approximately 25 percent over the previous one piece design. The increased gas flow also reduces the “pumping” require-ment freeing up mechanical power. This de-sign also provides an optimal location for in-jector placement, in the center of the head vertically above the cylinder. Results are lower emissions and improved fuel burn, cre-ating more power and less emissions.

Electronic Injection System Six-cylinder SisuDiesel™ engines use the new, 8-hole, Bosch, solenoid controlled injec-tors. Each injector is capable of up to 5 differ-ent stages where previous versions only had one. Reduced noise levels are also a result of this improved precision.

Common Rail Injection Developed by Bosch for use in only SisuDiesel™ engines, fuel is pumped up to high pressure, a maximum over 22,000 PSI, in the rail. It is then released by the injectors into the cylinder as required for engine set-tings. This configuration offers more advanced timing of fuel flow.

Bosh Fuel Pump System The fuel pump used in the Sisu is a Bosch, fuel lubricated radial piston pump. The pump responds very quickly and precisely to throttle movements, and injection pressure capacity is very high. The pump and injectors provide the correct amount of fuel needed for the horse-power requirements Sisu engines.

Stanadyne Fuel Filters and Feed Pump Two fuel filters are located on the “cool” side of the engine. The prefilter cleans to 30 mi-crons and the main filters to 5 microns. Using two filters increases the tractors ability to re-moved harmful debris from fuel before enter-ing the engine, and allows for longer filter life and reduced maintenance costs.

Viscous Fan Drive

The Viscous Fan Drive houses an internal clutch which responds to engine temperature. As the engine temperature increases, the clutch engages and makes the fan spin faster. This increases total airflow through the radiator and provides increased cooling capacity.

The engine information plate it attached to the right (warm) side of the engine near the starter. It contains information about the en-gine such as model, serial number, dyno horsepower, and the one person or team by whom it was assembled. All SisuDiesel en-gines proudly display this feature. These plates ensure that the utmost care and testing went in to the assembly of the engine.

Air to Air Intercooler All Tier III engines will be equipped with an air to air intercooler. The hot, compressed air coming from the turbocharger is quickly cooled inside the radiator type intercooler. Cooler air ensures better combustion which leads to better engine performance.

A Post Exhaust The location of the exhaust on the 5400 series cab models helps to reduce interior cab noise and vibration.

Down Swept Exhaust Tier III platform models feature down swept exhaust as standard. This exhaust configura-tion gives the operator the highest levels of visibility. Along with visibility, the down swept exhaust is great for low clearance areas. Ver-tical exhaust is available if desired.

TRANSMISSION

The Massey Ferguson 5400 series tractors feature a 16 x 16 transmission; the Dyna-4™. The Dyna-4™ is a semi-powershift transmission, with speedmatching capability. The Dyna-4 has a speed range of .79 to 25 mph, depending upon tire selection. If additional slower speeds are needed, the 5400 series can be equipped with either a creeper or super-creeper option. The creeper will allow the tractor to reach a minimum 0.4 mph at rated engine rpm. The super-creeper will allow the tractor to reach a minimum 0.12 mph at rated engine rpm. Please check the specifications section of the product information guide for a speed chart on your 5400 model of choice. All these features provide the operator with a versatile, reliable transmission for today’s demanding applications.

Dyna-4 Transmission The Dyna-4 transmission is a 16 speed, semi-powershift transmission. Simple operation and comfortable shifts are key features for the Dyna-4. Range changes can be made on the go without the use of the clutch pedal. When combining 4 clutchless range changes with 4 powershifts, the Dyna-4 becomes the simplest 16x16 semi-powershift transmission in its class.

Three Function Shuttle The familiar three function shuttle lever used on the 5400, along with the 6400, 7400 and 8400 series, is mounted on the left hand side of the steering column This feature allows the operator to increase and decrease through the 4 powershifts. Fin-gertip de-clutching and forward/reverse shut-tling can be done with the left hand, freeing up the right hand to operate an implement or loader. Programmable Forward/Reverse Shuttle Speeds Just like other models, preset shuttle speeds will add efficiency during operation.

Range button

T-Handle, Right Hand Controller The operator can change the 4-powershift speeds by simply bumping the right T-Handle control lever. The 4 range changes are made by bumping the T-Handle controller lever while pressing and holding the button on the left side of the handle. The action of clutching in order to change range or speeds is not re-quired, unless the tractor is under load.

Adjustable Shuttle Intensity The shuttle intensity, or the strength at which the transmission engages when using the three-function shuttle lever, can be easily ad-justed by turning the knob next to the T-handle controller. The intensity is adjustable from a setting of –5 (least) to +5 (most) in-tense. This allows for individual operators to adjust the shuttle intensity for a more comfort-able ride.

FRAME AND AXLES

The 5400 series tractors feature a proven design for their rear differential, brakes, and final drives. The rear differential lock can easily be engaged with the use of a rocker switch located on the right console. The differential lock is electro-hydraulically engaged to ensure proper, smooth engagement. Coupled to the rear differential system are the inboard rear planetary final drives. The final drives on the 5400 series tractors operate in an oil bath to ensure proper lubrication, reduced heat, and a long operational life. The 5400 series tractors have smooth, progressive stopping power provided by a rear wet, disc braking system. The system consists of ring pistons, brake discs, and steel backing plates. In addition, the brake discs are immersed in hydraulic oil to keep them lubricated and cool. The rear brakes are hydraulically actuated using a master cylinder at the brake pedals and a slave cylinder or ring piston, within the rear axle housing. Independent, suspended pedals operate the right and left brakes for assisted turning. When in transport, the pedals can be latched together to provide equal braking to each wheel. Tractors with Power Front Axle feature four-wheel braking during transport with latched brake pedals. Brake actuation will electro-hydraulically engage the PFA (Power Front Axle) clutch, which activates the four wheel braking effect.

Rear Wet Disk Brakes Wet rear disc brakes provide smooth, progressive, fade free braking. The wet system also keeps the discs cool during operation which maintains constant braking power and reduces fade. Wet discs also reduce wear to provide for a long service life and reduced maintenance.

Automatic Four Wheel Braking When both brake pedals are depressed at the same time, the PFA is automatically engaged and braking power is supplied to all four wheels. This feature increases operator safety when towing heavy loads.

Differential Lock Controls The differential locks on the 5400 series tractors are electro-hydraulically controlled by a convenient rocker switch located on the right console. The switch provides quick, con-venient access for the operator to engage the differential locks when needed. This feature increases productivity and ease of operation.

Independent Parking Brake 5400 series tractors are equipped with an independent parking brake. Operated by a hand lever, this brake is independent from the hydraulic braking system. This feature increases operator safety and reduces potential transmission damage.

2 Wheel Drive Front Axle The Massey Ferguson 5400 series two-wheel drive tractors feature axles with a thick box section construction. Welded gussets are placed at high stress points for extra strength, and axle pivot bearings are extra wide for longer service life. The king pin and stub ax-les are a large diameter to bear extra heavy loads. The box section design means track width adjustment is easily accomplished by sliding the axle arms in or out. Pre-drilled holes allow the front axle to be adjusted in 4-inch increments to achieve the desired tread setting.

Power Front Axle Tractor wheel slip can be reduced and drawbar horsepower can be increased with the addition of the powered front axle. Studies show that drawbar pulling power can increase approximately 20% over a conventional 2WD tractor of equal horsepower. This added efficiency increases the operators output and reduces energy loss in the field.

Single Piece Cast Iron Housing The one-piece center housing is designed to handle shock loads and torsion twisting while operating in a wide variety of operations. The axle housing will also handle heavier loads than the two wheel drive axle during loader use. The cast iron housing provides added durability and service life to the tractor power train.

Integral Component The Powered Front Axle is an integral compo-nent of the tractor, not an add on part. Each powered front axle is matched to specific horsepower and chassis size for each tractor model.

New Front Axle Casting The 5465 and the 5475 are now fitted with a new design of front axle support which can either be fitted with a weight frame or with front linkage. The steering angle is optimized for wide tires and narrow track settings. The design combines a reinforced sump arrange-ment that removes the need for additional side and underneath rails when front linkage is fitted.

Open Universal Joints The powered front axle, on the 5400 series steering mechanism, employs open universal joints. This allows mud and debris to fall away. In addition, open joints provide the operator with easy access for routine mainte-nance and inspection.

Centerline Drive Massey Ferguson powered front axles feature a centerline drive system. The centerline drive keeps components of the drive train mounted flush with the chassis. In addition, this type of mounting allows a straight link from the transfer case to the front differential, providing increased crop clearance. Opera-tors can enjoy maintenance free operation and improved reliability.

Flanged Rear Axles

The 5400 series is equipped with a flanged rear axle. The flange axle allows the tractors to maintain extreme maneuverability in tight clearances. The flange axle still maintains the adaptability to numerous tread settings by changing the orientation of the pressed steel wheels.

Control of Powered Front Axle A convenient rocker switch allows the powered front axle to be engaged and disengaged electro-hydraulically. The switch ensures a proper, smooth engagement without damage to drive train components. The powered front axle can be engaged on the go without stopping or loosing momentum in the field.

3 POINT HITCH / PTO / DRAWBAR Independent Power Take Off (PTO) is standard equipment on all 5400 series tractors. The PTO is driven by a live shaft from the engine, and a wet, multi-disc clutch engages and disengages the PTO output shaft. A safety feature is designed into the engagement system to prevent the engine from being started if the PTO switch is “on”. All 5400 series tractors feature dual speed, 540/1000 rpm PTO, and an economy speed is optional. A digital display of the PTO speed is provided in the dash mounted instrument panel for precise control of PTO speed. The Massey Ferguson 5400 series tractors feature an Electronic Lift Control (ELC) 3-Point hitch. The hitch provides quick response to changing conditions when operating in draft sensing mode.

Economy PTO Economy PTO is offered only as a factory in-stalled option. Economy PTO is most benefi-cial when operating equipment that does not require maximum horsepower. Engine speed can be reduced by 23% from 2000 rpm to 1550 rpm, and still maintain full PTO shaft speed. Slower engine speeds reduce fuel us-age, noise, and vibration. Economy PTO helps to increase tractor utilization while re-ducing fuel expense.

Digital PTO Speed Display A digital PTO speed display provides precise control of PTO driven implements. This fea-ture eliminates guess-work associated with matching PTO speeds to engine rpms.

Independent PTO The PTO clutch can be engaged and disen-gaged independently of the main transmission clutch. This allows the starting and stopping of PTO driven implements at any time, saving time and increasing productivity.

3-Point Hitch The hitches on the 5400 series tractors will handle mounted implements such as planters, cultivators, rear blades, mowers and much more. This increases the tractors versatility and gives the operator a greater return on in-vestment.

Electronic 3-Point Hitch Control The 5400 series features easy to operate Electronic Lift Controls. The rocker-switch and dial controls are similar to those of other mid-sized row-crop tractors, and the controls al-low quick customization for various tasks. The controls are easy to learn and use in op-erations such as cultivating, mowing, and grading. For convenience, 3-point controls are located at the rear of the right console. This makes operation of the hitch easy regardless of the field operation. In addition, a transport lock equipped with active transport control allows the operator to lock mounted implements in the up position and use the hydraulic rams to absorb shocks during transport over rough surfaces.

Telescopic Lower Links Telescopic lower link ends are standard equipment on all of these mid-sized row-crop tractors. This makes hooking up large mounted implements faster and easier.

Telescopic Stabilizers Telescopic stabilizers are standard equipment on all 5400 series tractors. The quick adjust-ment capability of telescopic stabilizers en-able the operator to maintain control of the side-to-side movement of the attached imple-ment. Adjustments can be matched to the im-plement and the operation, either in the field or in the yard. Stabilizers can also be adjusted to hold the implement rigid during transport.

Adjustable Lift Arms Attached turnbuckles allow for quick height and level adjustment of 3-point mounted implements. Additional weather resistant caps provide protection from the elements and maintain a free, full range of adjustment.

Lower Link Sensing The link sensing system used for ground en-gaged 3-point implement work has been relo-cated on the new tier III models. Instead of the link sensing system being located at the top link, it has been moved to the lower link. A lower link design provides unprecedented levels of accuracy when it comes to draft con-trol.

Swinging Drawbar The swinging drawbar mounted on the 5400 series is built to withstand the loads of the op-erator’s towed implements. The drawbar is offset which enables multiple position settings.

HYDRAULICS

Open Center hydraulics are standard equipment on the 5400 series. This system offers excellent hydraulic flow and pressure for a wide range of applications. The standard hydraulic package also includes two valves. Options are available to add additional hydraulic valves, up to a total of four. The tractors can also be equipped with an additional loader joystick which leaves the tractor rear remotes free to operate other implements. Closed Center Load Sensing hydraulics are available on cab models. This advanced hydraulic system can achieve flow rates of 29 gpm at the remotes. With the closed center option, the operator has the capability of running live 3rd function hydraulics, which will be convenient when using a grapple fork. The 5400 series tractors utilize a high capacity oil filtration system with a spin on filter. The spin on filter allows the operator to perform quick, easy maintenance of the hydraulic system. Also, the addition of system monitor lights in the cab console alert the operator when the hydraulic system needs servicing.

Open Center Hydraulics The Massey Ferguson 5400 series tractors feature a dual pump, open center hydraulic system. This system is capable of supplying 15 gal/min of total flow. The dual pump con-figuration supplies high pressure oil (2900-psi) for steering, remote valves, and 3-Point hitch. Additional flow directs oil to operate the PTO clutch, PFA, differential lock and transmission lubrication.

Closed Center Load Sensing Hydraulics Closed center load sensing hydraulics are now available as an option on the 5400 Series tractors (not available on 5435). This advanced system will provide the operator up to 29 gpm of total hydraulic flow. The variable displacement piston pump will sense the hydraulic system needs, and then sup-ply the proper amount of oil. Closed center systems are extremely responsive and provide high pressure oil only when required. When hydraulic power is not needed, the variable dis-placement pump sits at a zero degree angle in “stand-by” mode. The hydraulic system is still under pressure, but no oil is flowing, reducing the horsepower requirements from the engine. In a closed center system, the oil remains cooler due to the fact that it is not constantly being pumped throughout the system. The longevity of the oil is preserved when it remains cool.

Improved Valve Cage and Coupler Design Hydraulic couplings on the new 5400 series tractors have been raised off of the transmis-sion housing to eliminate interference from the top link. In addition, the valves have been spaced farther apart to allow operators wear-ing gloves easy access. The new design also allows easier access to the flow control ad-justments. The final result is a design which reduces equipment hook-up time.

Lever Layout The lever layout on the 5400 series tractor places hydraulic controls in a convenient loca-tion where they can be easily reached by the operator. Ergonomic design helps to de-crease operator fatigue and increase effi-ciency.

Factory Installed Joystick A new factory installed loader joystick is now available as an option. The new joystick comes equipped with 3rd and live 3rd function capabilities. Softride activation is standard on the new joystick as well.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM The Massey Ferguson 5400 Series tractors feature a powerful electrical package capable of powering the display panel, lighting packages, and other normal tractor functions. An 80 AMP alternator (120 AMP optional) charges the 505 CCA battery. The system is a perfect fit for a tractor known for its reliability and efficiency.

Battery New for the Tier III 5400 Series tractors is the relocation of the battery. The 505 CCA bat-tery is now located under the steps on the right hand side of the tractor, allowing easy access.

Main Power Disconnect The optional battery disconnect allows the op-erator to completely disconnect the battery from the tractor electrical system with the flip of a switch. This feature helps preserve the battery when the tractor is stored for long peri-ods of time.

7 Terminal ASAE Rear Electrical Outlet The rear of the tractor incorporates a 7-pin ASAE rear receptacle. The outlet supplies power for lights on towed or mounted imple-ments. A spring loaded cap covers the outlet when not in use.

OPERATOR ENVIRONMENT

Most 5400 series tractors are offered in either a platform or cab version (5465—5480 are cab only). Regardless of preference, extra effort was placed on designing a modern style operator environment. Exceptional visibility, easy to reach controls, adjustable driving positions, and extra elbow room were primary considerations. The Massey Ferguson 5400 series tractors feature a modern styled cab. It is a ROPS (Roll Over Protective Structure) certified cab that provides a comfortable sealed environment with heating and air conditioning, low noise level, and plenty of open space. The cab is easily entered via self-cleaning steps and wide doors on both sides of the tractor. To aid in entry and exit, extra long handles are located at the front cab corners and on the doors, all within easy reach of the operator. Inside the cab you have the option of an adjustable air suspension seat or the standard spring suspension seat. With a variety of adjustments, either seat is sure to provide the operator with a smooth and comfortable ride. The 5400 series platform configuration provides the operator added security with a certified ROPS. The platform version also provides exceptional versatility for applications involving tight overhead clearances. The open station provides excellent visibility and easy-to-reach controls. Wide fenders and self-cleaning steps are only a few of the safety features provided to increase operator safety. In summary, the operator area on the 5400 series tractor is designed to eliminate operator fatigue. Instruments are easy to read, controls are easy to reach, and vision is clear to the front, rear and sides. Many ergonomic features have been created to ensure continued operator comfort, convenience, and protection during long hours of operation.

Front Console and Instrument Panel The front steering console and dash feature a comprehensive range of gauges and warning lights. These indicators give the operator immediate, detailed information on tractor performance and operating conditions. The instrument panel for the 5400 series features analog gauges for engine rpm, coolant temperature, and fuel level. Two digital readouts allow the operator precise control of PTO speed and theoretical forward ground speed. A rolling hour meter sits in the center of the ta-chometer to track hours of service, and a panel of warning and indicator lights is positioned across the bottom of the instrument panel. These lights illuminate to show the tractor features that are engaged, and also alert the operator of tractor components requiring maintenance. Additional controls are located on the dash panel and on either side of the steering column. These controls include field lighting, hazard lighting, ignition switch, steering wheel tilt and telescoping, and windshield wiper controls. Every effort has been made to consolidate the controls on the 5400 series instrument panel to provide greater forward visibility.

Rotating Beacon For tractors equipped with either a single or dual rotating beacons, the on/off rocker switch is located on the B cab post above the right hand console.

Rear Windshield Wiper For tractors equipped with an optional rear windshield wiper, the on/off rocker switch control is also located on the B cab post to the right of the operator.

Work Lighting Control Panel Most lighting functions on the 5400 series can be controlled on the left hand side of the dash. Road lights, field working lights, and hazard warning lights are all controlled by rocker switches.

Accessory Electrical Outlets Additional 12 volt electrical outlets are sup-plied to provide power to accessories such as monitors, a cigarette lighter, or cell phone chargers. All outlets are conveniently located to the rear of the right hand console.

Right Hand Control Console All major tractor and implement controls are sensibly located in the console to the right hand side within easy reach of the operator.

Overhead Cab Controls The cab roof design for the 5400 series cre-ates ample room for the operator. The most visible attributes are the elimination of the roof hatch, domed air vents, and a larger field cooler. In addition, the compact design of the overhead controls provide greater forward visibility in the field and an increased viewing angle during loader operations.

Cab Climate Controls The climate controls on the 5400 series offer four fan speed selections, air conditioning control, and a thermostat. Adjustments are simple and allow for a wide range of ambient temperatures for operator comfort.

Air Circulation Control The cab on the 5400 series provides the operator a choice of either outside fresh air, or re-circulated cabin air. A simple louver con-trol adjusts the air path.

Field Storage The 5400 series cab provides ample room for storage of important field items such as cell phones, notebooks, and snacks.

Optional Air Suspension Seat The 5400 series comes standard with a spring suspension seat. An air ride swivel seat with armrests is available as an option in cab mod-els only . In addition, an instructor seat can be added as a safe, secure location for in-structors to ride while training a new operator.

Cab Roof Features of the cab roof include easy to reach HVAC controls, radio access, and air recircu-lation. More headroom and forward visibility is made possible by relocating the HVAC ducts.

Self Cleaning Steps The 5400 series tractors feature access on either side of the platform or cab. Wide, self-cleaning steps provide safe, sure footing for entry and exit of the operator area. Open grates allow mud and ice to fall away.

SERVICEABILITY

Easy access for routine tractor maintenance was a key element in the design of the Tier III Massey Ferguson 5400 series. The new one piece hood will provide unprecedented access to the entire engine compartment. 6 cylinder Tier III models feature small, removable side panels for complete access. The new hood design springs up with the push of a button and provides complete access to the engine air filter, radiator fill, belts, alternator, air conditioning compressor and windshield wiper fluid. Improved accessibility makes servicing the radiator, oil cooler, and air conditioning condenser easier. Daily service of items such as engine oil level, engine oil fill, and fuel filter drain can be accomplished simply by raising the one piece hood. Other service points such as transmission oil and hydraulic oil can be easily checked at the back of the tractor. Also, the 5400 series tractors feature ground level fueling with a larger opening to prevent backsplashes and spills. An external cab air filter access hatch makes removal for cleaning easier. Also, battery service is simplified by locating the battery box under the cab. A simple removable cover provides quick access and ease of maintenance. Finally, the incorporation of a weatherproof toolbox molded to the side of the fuel tank provides storage for tools and accessories outside the tractor.

New One Piece Hood New for the Tier III 5400’s is a new and im-proved one piece hood. The one piece hood gives the operator unprecedented access to the entire engine compartment as well as key service points. The new hood allows the op-erator to service his tractor much faster than before.

Fuel Fill from the Ground The fuel tank can be filled from the left side of the tractor while standing at ground level. The fuel inlet on the tank is oversized to allow for proper tank venting and prevent splash-back.

Weatherproof Toolbox A plastic toolbox, molded into the fuel tank, provides convenient, weatherproof storage for tools and field supplies. The toolbox is equipped with a locking hasp for security. Another locking hasp secures the toolbox to the tractor. By unlatching one hasp, the toolbox is easily removed from the tank for transport to another location.

Pivoting Cooling Package By releasing a simple latch, the oil cooler and air conditioning condenser pivot up and away from the radiator to accommodate cleaning with an air or water hose. This feature is stan-dard in the 6 cylinder Tier III models.

Engine Air Filter Access The one piece hood provides quick, easy ac-cess to the engine air filter. This feature in-creases maintenance efficiency. (4 cylinder model shown)

Cab Air Filter Access A convenient hatch located on the left side of the cab roof provides quick access to the cab air filter. This location provides access to the filter from outside the operator area and eliminates contamination of the cab during filter removal.

Super Traction Radial The Super Traction Radial is designed for top performance in heavy, moist soils. The Super Traction Radial features deep, 45-degree tread lug angles to promote self-cleaning tread action. High strength body cords and belt package provide casing strength for to-day's modern equipment and field conditions. Offered in conventional sizes and some metric sizes.

Dyna Torque The Dyna Torque Radial's unique tread design with three-bar pitch provides outstanding traction in today's farming conditions. Multi-layered belts increase traction by allowing tires to place a longer footprint on the ground. A natural shape reduces stress at the shoulder and bead for a long casing life. The radial casing allows the sidewalls to flex and provide a full footprint for increased traction.
