Version 1.0
Introduction
The EVO-SP™ System is a retrofit technology that allows stationary diesel engines to operate on a mixture of natural gas and diesel fuel (NG+D™). Installation of the EVO-SP™ System requires no major changes or modifications to the converted engine and allows for the safe replacement of 50% to 70% of the engine’s normal diesel fuel requirement with natural gas. After conversion to NG+D™ operation, the engine can still be operated on 100% diesel fuel without loss of power or efficiency. The EVO-SP™ System has been designed to allow for switching of fuel modes during full or part load conditions without interruption in engine speed, power or stability.
Technical Overview
Designed for Performance
The EVO-SP System utilizes proprietary gas controls that provide ultra-fast response to engine load changes. Un-like traditional retrofit systems, EVO-SP has been specifi-cally designed for highly cyclical and dynamic applications such as drilling operations, or variable speed pumping, or compressor applications. The EVO-SP gas control system combines a powerful electronic control unit (ECU) with a fast reacting, integrated mixer throttle-body (MTB). The ECU monitors load, mass airflow, RPM, fuel flows and other en-gine data up to 50 times per second and then commands the MTB throttle position to achieve the highest possible gas substitution rates based on the current load condition. This rapid control loop allows the EVO-SP System to safely and efficiently maximize fuel cost savings and dramatically ex-tend the runtime of stand-by power systems.
Advanced Engine Monitoring with Dynamic Setpoint Protection™
The EVO-SP System incorporates a revolutionary engine protection technology. Dynamic Setpoint Protection™ (DSP) is a proprietary system that monitors critical engine pa-rameters such as exhaust temperature and vibration levels across the full engine load range. Each monitored parameter has a discrete, “load-specific” safety setpoint referenced to 100% diesel performance curves. DSP allows for maximum gas substitution rates whether operating at light, medium or heavy engine loadings while ensuring that the engine is always operating within OEM specified limits. In addition, the EVO-SP System offers remote engine monitoring using a proprietary web-based wireless (cellular or satellite) service that includes SP event alerts as well as periodic reporting and general engine reporting using J-1939 protocols.
Engineered for Safety
The EVO-SP System provides a new level of operator safety. Each EVO-SP System comes standard with a remote emer-gency stop (e-stop) switch mounted on the control panel, a combustible gas detector and a flame sensor. In the event of an e-stop activation, a gas leak or a fire in the engine room or enclosure, the EVO-SP System will automatically shut down NG+D operation, revert the engine to 100% die-sel mode and turn-off natural gas supply using a normally closed, dual shutoff solenoid valve. To further enhance safe-ty, each EVO-SP System is shipped with a fully assembled and tested “gas train” consisting of certified and approved components that meet the most stringent worldwide stan-dards for gas controls.
Advanced User Interface Simplifies Operation
The EVO-SP System utilizes a state-of-the-art remote touchscreen display that is housed in a NEMA 4x stain-less steel enclosure. The touchscreen displays the EVO-SP Systems proprietary graphical user interface (GUI) that has been designed to convey critical information to the operator in a simple at a glance format. The GUI homepage pres-ents the operator with virtual gauges and bar graphs that are color coded to quickly show normal, pre-alarm and fault conditions. Displayed information includes gas percentage, throttle-body position, diesel fuel flow, exhaust tempera-tures, vibration level, gas fuel flow, kWe / HP, manifold air pressure and engine mass airflow. Additional screens can be accessed for fault diagnostics, communications, sensor calibration and System setup.

EVO-SP™ System Bi-Fuel Applications
The EVO-SP™ System is designed for a variety of industrial applications ranging from emergency stand-by power to the most demanding continuous duty operations. The SP control system is compatible with both constant and variable speed applications using either mechanical or electronic govern-ing systems.
In addition to pipeline-supplied natural gas, the EVO-SP System is compatible with other fuels including wellhead gas, associated gas, biogas and coal-bed methane (CBM). The use of non-pipeline quality fuels may limit maximum gas substitution rates depending on the amount of heavi-er hydrocarbons (C2+) contained in the fuel. The use of non-pipeline gas may require filtration and/or drying to en-sure engine and SP System durability.

Benefits
Lower Fuel Costs
Natural gas has emerged as a leading alternative to petro-leum derived fuels. In most markets, the commodity price of natural gas is well below diesel fuel on a cost per energy unit basis. The EVO-SP System has been specifically designed to allow operators of stationary engines to take advantage of this price differential in a safe and efficient manner.
Extended Generator Runtime
Stand-by diesel generators are typically restricted to brief periods of continuous operation as governed by the size of their fuel storage tanks. While highly useful for intermittent power losses, their utility is substantially diminished during extended power failures as a long duration outage can ex-ceed a generator’s fuel storage capacity. The EVO-SP Sys-tem provides significant increases in generator runtime us-ing pipeline-supplied natural gas as a substitute for limited onsite diesel fuel.
The EVO-SP System has been designed to ensure that con-verted generators meet the most demanding stand-by pow-er requirements including NFPA 110. The SP System can be utilized on single generators as well as multiple generators operating in parallel stand-by service. In the event that nat-ural gas service is interrupted, the SP System reverts the emergency generator to 100% diesel mode without loss of engine speed or generator frequency.
Installation
The EVO-SP System has been designed for fast, in-field retrofit minimizing engine downtime. Each SP System is shipped with pre-assembled and pre-tested components, allowing for a quick and error free installation.
The EVO-SP System integrates with existing engine acces-sories and systems without the need to modify or replace OEM components. The SP System ECU interfaces with sen-sors, gas controls and a remote control panel using pre-fab-ricated wiring harnesses and weatherproof quick connec-tions. This design minimizes field wiring and allows for rapid installation of the SP System.
Installation and commisioning should only be preformed by a factory trained and authorized technician.

Diesel Fuel Flow Meter
Description
Most diesel engine fuel systems employ forward and return fuel flow lines. The return flow amount must be measuredand subtracted from the forward flow amount to determine consumption. The amount of returnflow varies by engine type - from as little as 10% of fuel consumption to as much as 1000% or more, necessitating very tight margins for error when measur ing flows and calculating the difference. With regard to engines that use the return flow to cool unit injec-tors (i.e.,Detroit Diesel and CAT 3500 Series),the return flow temperature is substantially higher than the forward flow, leading to the possibility of error in measurement caused by the expansion of fuel. The EVO-SO fuel flow meter has special temperature compensated systems to accurately measure and compensate for these inconsistencies. Each pair of sensors (forward and return) is individually calibrated and matched to the microprocessor-driven meter head.

Combustable Gas Detector
The Infrared Gas Sensor is a completely self-contained de-vice that measures the concentration of hydrocarbon gas accumulated in a protected area and transmits this informa-tion to the EVO-SP ECU.
The Infrared Gas Sensor uses the proven non-dispersive in-frared (NDIR) principle to detect and monitor the presence of gas. Using an infrared source lamp and an optical sensor with a narrow-band filter, an analysis of the optical absorp-tion through the gas allows the concentration of the target gas to be determined. The strong fundamental absorption band centered at 3.32 micrometers is used for the detection of hydrocarbons. This allows short optical path lengths to be used while maintaining good resolution. A second infrared sensoroperating at a wavelength not affected by the target gas is used to eliminate effects resulting from ambient and phys-ical variations. These include temperature changes, source and filter degradation and particle scattering.

Flame Detector
The flame detector provides a combination of UV and IR sensors, where the IR sensor operates at a wavelength of 2.5-3.0 μm, and can detect hydrocarbon-based fuel and gasfires, hydroxyl and hydrogen fires, as well as metal and in-organic fires.
The UV/IR flame detector senses radiant energy in the short wave section of both the ultraviolet and infrared portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The signals from both sen-sors are analyzed for frequency, intensity and duration. Si-multaneous detection of radiant energy in both the UV and IR sensors triggers an alarm signal. The UV sensor incorpo-rates a special logic circuit that helps prevent false alarms caused by solar radiation.
