Biotek’s indirect electrolytic ozone generator applies advanced electrolysis technology, producing high purity ozone from municipal tap water.
Since 1988, Biotek had started leading traditional Corona Discharge ozone technology, especially in the small and medium size ozone application industry. Then, realizing the many disadvantages of Corona Discharge systems, in 1995 Biotek UK was established to research and develop the technology of indirect electrolytic ozone generation(EOG). Utilizing the experience and knowledge of previous research of traditional ozone generators, together with decades of continuous innovation and development, Biotek uses a patented deionized (DI) water generation system, making clean DI water from tap water. Using solid polymer electrolyte membrane between electrodes in the generator as a bridge for energy exchange, electrolysis of DI water occurs at the electrodes. Together this is the Biotek patented indirect electrolytic ozone generation system. Despite H2O, no other substance is involved in the reaction. Thus, there are no by-products other than O2 and O3. This approach enhances the purity of ozone produced (28%), allowing a breakthrough of many applications which have previously failed using CD.
Ozone can be generated in several ways -- Corona Discharge, Ultraviolet Radiation and others. Among these, the Corona Discharge Method (referred to as CD below) has been the most widely used. The technologies involved in corona discharge ozone generation are varied, but all operate fundamentally by passing oxygen-containing gas through an electrical field which splits oxygen (O2) molecules in the gas. The resulting oxygen atoms (O-), seeking stability, attach to other oxygen molecules (O2), forming ozone (O3).
Since air contains 78% nitrogen (by volume), the CD methods using air to generate ozone also produce NOx in the process. NOx has been generally recognized as toxic, causing adverse effects on respiratory systems of humans and animals and also linked to cancer. Meanwhile, the low concentration of oxygen in the air combined with the low efficiency of CD limits the production of high purity of ozone (1-6% only).
The Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation method applies UV waves at 185 nanometers (nm). Air is passed over a UV device, which splits oxygen (O2) molecules in the gas. The resulting oxygen atoms (O-), seeking stability, attach to other oxygen molecules (O2), forming ozone (O3). Its production is a function of the capacity of the UV lamps and can be very low, normally between 1-3%.
